L i n d e n h u r s t Community Cares Coalition held a “Spirit of the Community Meeting” at the Lindenhurst High School.

The intent of the meeting was to bring together government officials, non-profit organizations, corporations and serviceminded leaders to discuss the contributions made by

our community members to achieve the goals set forth by the Lindenhurst Community Cares Coalition.

Many of the Lindenhurst community leaders, including Mayor Michael Lavorata and Deputy Mayor Maryann Weckerle, were in attendance at the gathering and reported on the many activities

and positive changes going on in the Village of Lindenhurst.

Mayor Lavorata praised so many of the Lindenhurst residents, including members of the Lindenhurst Community Cares Coalition, that have been working together to help battle the drug epidemic.

Providing Inspiration about her love of books and writing. Mullady also told the students about the many different stories she wrote and attempted to get published over the years, from which she received many rejection letters.

As the school’s counselor, she often finds inspiration and ideas from her students as was the case for “Bye Bye Pesky Fly,” which teaches readers how to be peaceful inside and not let other people bother them. Mullady told students about the writing, editing and illustrating

Lysa Mullady, newly published author and guidance counselor at Deauville Gardens East Elementary School in the Copiague School District, shared her new book and her path to becoming an author with fourth-graders in Kristina Sudano’s class on February 8th.

Mullady’s children’s book “Bye Bye Pesky Fly” was published just last month but she told the class about the long road to becoming a published author. She shared her dreams of being a writer and spoke

processes and encouraged them to write down their ideas if they dream of one day becoming an author.

At the end of the discussion, students asked Mullady questions about her book and her ideas and learned she is in the process of having a second children’s book published.

Before school, Mullady facilitates a fifth-grade writers club and will be hosting a fourth-grade club for aspiring authors in the spring.

Amanda Munz, founder of The Fashion Foundation, started a non-profit in 2014 to sell fashion apparel at a reasonable price and, more importantly, to help provide students with school supplies.

As someone who has always loved fashion, Amanda decided to study at the Fashion Institute of Technology in Manhattan. After receiving her Bachelor’s degree in Fashion Merchandising, she went on to receive a Master’s degree in Public Administration.

While getting her feet wet in the fashion industry, she constantly took note of people throwing fashion apparel in the garbage, as well as samples building up that designers didn’t know what to do with. This inspired her to start The Fashion Foundation, where she utilizes those pieces by selling them at a reasonable price, and then pays it forward by using the profits earned to purchase school supplies for students to help them succeed.

Today, Munz runs a showroom in Farmingdale, as well as a pop-up showroom in Manhattan, where new apparel can be purchased for a fraction of its retail cost. Many items are also available for purchase on her website, www.TheFashionFoundation.org. To this day, she has received thousands of pieces from fashion companies and helped countless students succeed. The Fashion Foundation has purchased clean uniforms, notebooks, art

supplies, athletic equipment, backpacks and more for students in New York. Amanda never just hands a school a check; instead, she orders the supplies, ships them to the school directly and is usually always there to hand-deliver them to the students herself. It’s apparent she truly loves what she does!

Copiague School District has renamed its administrative offices in honor of longtime board of education member Everett E. Newman III who passed away late last year. The Copiague Board of Education officially adopted the resolution on February 12th and unveiled

the sign to Newman’s family and friends.

“During his more than 30 years of service to our district, Everett E. Newman III was a staunch supporter of our students, our schools and our community,” said Copiague Board of Education president Laura Gavey. “On behalf of the

entire board, it is our sincere honor to recognize his dedication and tireless commitment to Copiague by dedicating our district office in his name. Everett is greatly missed, but his legacy will last a lifetime.”

Jumping Rope for Heart Health During American Heart Month, students at West Gates Avenue Elementary School in the Lindenhurst Union Free School District enjoyed a visit from Mark Rothstein who shared his program the World of Jump Roping.

Children were invited to decorate cards and add personal touches to their work in hopes of showing their support and offering their well-wishes for those brave servicemen and women who served the country.

Assemblywoman Kimberly Jean-Pierre, who initiated the project, had her Community Relations Director, Lasheca Lewis, collect the cards to deliver them to the servicemen and women who live at the Long Island State Veterans Home.

HOPE CHILDREN’S FUND

Hope Children’s Fund is an international non-profit that operates with the motto “Education Is Key.” For children in Kenya, this couldn’t be more true. Without an education and the ability to speak English, these children often lack the opportunity to rise above fetching water and cutting wood. Kevin Mann, Vice President of Hope Children’s Fund, explained, “The government in Kenya doesn’t have the resources to take care of the children in their country like the United States government does.” It is not shocking to see a very young child in Kenya hopelessly wandering the streets without family...hungry and just trying to survive. Hope Children’s Fund does something about this problem.

In 2001, Hope Children’s Fund registered as a nonprofit and raised $40,000 through donations – precisely enough money to begin construction on an orphanage that stands high up on a hill in Meru, Kenya. By 2005, the orphanage opened and began transforming lives for children, many of whom had lost their parents in the AIDS epidemic.

This orphanage, Jerusha Mwiraria Hope Children’s Fund Home, has a dining hall and a dormitory for boys and girls. It provides the children with shelter, steady meals and the opportunity to attend school. The children are shown family values and given chores to complete in order for them to gain life skills. They currently house 100 children and have had many success stories. If you would like to be part of another one of their success stories, you can!

There are 22 orphans who still need to be sponsored through Hope Children’s Fund’s sponsorship program - $1/day or $365/year will help send these children to school so they have a better chance

to succeed. Below, you will see a photo of Ian Mugambi, a 12 year-old boy in need of a sponsor. Ian lost his mother and sister and currently resides at this orphanage in Meru. For further details on mentoring Ian or another child, please contact Aida Mann at AidaMann@optonline.com. Upon sponsorship, you will receive a photo and bio of the child you chose to sponsor.

You will be able to write letters or send e-mails directly to the child to provide them with hopeful messages! Kevin and Aida often travel to visit the orphanage and welcome sponsors to come along so they can meet firsthand the child they sponsor.

Growing up on Long Island, I realize it is easy to be misled into thinking everyone lives as we do, but that is not the case.

Ian is much more than just someone in the photo on this page; he is one of many people across the world who is reaching out for help. Although there are plenty of ways we can spend $1 a day, using that money to mentor a child in need is truly a priceless experience!
