Lindenhurst Mayor Michael Lavorata and Trustee Doug Madlon joined the Chiefs, Officers, and Members of the Lindenhurst Fire Department to recognize members for their extraordinary actions during 2023. At the Fire Department meeting held on Thursday, February 1, 2024, awards and certificates were issued to numerous members for their actions during 2023. As a result of their training and quick actions, many lives were saved. The following awards were presented: 1 – Rescue Medal, 17 – Pre-hospital saves and 7 – Unit citations.

society, and draft a 300- to 400- word essay expressing their views based on a patriotic theme chosen by the VFW commander-inchief. The theme for this year was: “What Are the Greatest Attributes of Our Democracy?”

The students compete for a share of nearly $1 million in state and national prizes with the first place state winners receiving a $500 prize and the national first place winner earning a $5,000 prize.

Mercy Soup Kitchen Seeking Volunteers It is an exciting time at the Mercy Soup Kitchen of Wyandanch as it is preparing to launch its new and expanded post Covid operation. Located in the basement of Trinity Lutheran Church at 17 South 20th Street, the Kitchen served its first meal to hungry people in 1980 and currently serves an average of 108 people

per day. During the pandemic, however, Kitchen procedures had to be modified in order to provide hot, nourishing meals safely and continuously to those in need. Indoor sit-down dining was discontinued and only take-out dining was available. But today the Kitchen is posing for a post-Covid reopening – a

reorganizational rebirth of sorts – where Kitchen procedures can finally return to again offering guests dignified, indoor sit-down dining. The Kitchen relies heavily on its generous volunteer support and, as such, numerous on-site and off-site volunteer opportunities are now available. While there are openings for

on-site positions, such as helping to prepare and serve meals and to perform various maintenance functions, there are also openings for diverse off-site positions in areas such as finance, grant development and preparation, legal compliance assurance, marketing duties, social media facilitation and fund raising/ donation coordination.

Only with the efforts of its volunteers can the Kitchen succeed in its mission to provide food security to those in need. Please consider sharing some of your time and talents with the Kitchen to make this happen. We invite you to join our team. Pal-O-Mine Equestrian, Inc., a private, not for profit organization providing a comprehensive therapeutic equine program using horses to facilitate growth, learning and healing for children and adults with disabilities, has announced its 4th Annual Hay Drive. It is hoping that animal loving Long Islanders will once again help raise funds to feed the organization’s herd during the challenging winter months. Feeding a large herd is costly and hay costs continue to increase due to weather and supply and demand challenges. Depending on the type of hay, each bale of hay weighing approximately 50-80 lbs. can cost from $13.00 to over $20.00. Pal-O-Mine’s 6-week bill averages over $9,000 based on its herd eating 18 bales of hay (1,000 lbs.) every day. The Long Island Pet Expo Returns The Long Island Pet Expo returns on March 2-3, 2024, with fur flying entertainment, dog sporting competitions and educational programs designed for the whole family. The event returns to the Suffolk Federal Credit Union Arena and features many special attractions, pet adoptions and outstanding shopping for pet lovers and their pets. “The Long Island area is passionate about animals and pets of all kinds,” said show co-producer Karen Garetano of Family Pet Shows, which runs several similar events in the northeast. The 100+ special exhibits always feature some of the hottest new products coming out often before they hit the retail shelves. Pets on leashes are always welcome, and several area rescue groups with adoptable pets will be on hand. Popular performers and presenters include Gail Mirabella and the Dynamo Dogs, Diana Frohman and her Beautiful Dancing Dogs, Schutzhund Demonstration by Maximum K9 Service, the Dog Lovers Days Lure Course, Rainforest Reptiles Shows, TICA Championship Cat Shows, Rabbit Hopping, the Long Island Dog Derby and more “We always have fun at these events, but we also are strong supporters of responsible pet ownership and humane values when it comes to all issues involving animals and pets,” said Garetano. “We partner with several community organizations, shelters, veterinarians and other animal lovers educate and inform when it comes to best practices

2024 Summer Camp Lottery Now Open! We are pleased to announce that the Village will again sponsor the annual Summer Recreation Camp at the Village Park. The camp will start at the beginning of July (exact date TBD) and continue for six (6) weeks. Camp hours are 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM, Monday – Friday. Campers are grouped by age (not by school grade) in the following groups: 5-7 year olds, 8-9 year olds, and 10-14 year olds. The camp is open to Lindenhurst children who are eligible to attend the Lindenhurst School District. Please note, children must complete kindergarten by the end of this school

year to be eligible to register. Our staff is planning hard to offer the campers a summer of fun. We are determined to follow all recommendations and protocols established by the Board of Health and camper to counselor ratios; thus, the lottery. Please fill out the lottery application. If your child is chosen, you will receive the registration documents via email. The application and all pertinent information (including instructions for registration such as time and place, required forms and fees) will be included in the email. Be sure to include all requested information on the

lottery application, especially email contact. All remaining applicants who did not get chosen in the lottery will be placed on a waiting list for their age group. A lottery application must be submitted for each child. If you cannot print the application or submit it via email, please call Village Hall (631) 9577500 between 8:00 AM and 3:30 PM. Lottery applications must be returned by email (info@ villageoflindenhurstny. gov), fax (631) 9574605, or to Village Hall no later than February 29, 2024.
