THINKING OF MOVING?

John D.: I interviewed a dozen realtors before selecting Bob Meade. He is head and shoulders above any other realtor I came across. Smart, honest, hard working, patient, prompt, fantastic follow through, always ready to go the extra mile. Combine that with his extensive experience in real estate, and his intimate knowledge of the areas he represents, there is no other realtor I would ever consider. He never took anything for granted. Crossed every “T”, dotted every “I”, left no stone unturned. Always looking out for my best interests in any way he could. Personally present for every inspection, always reading through the contracts himself. Answered his phone day or night, if he didn’t have an answer to my question, he would get me one. He brought so many things to my attention that I would have missed, I felt so safe and comfortable with him representing me. An asset to any real estate negotiation. I honestly would not consider buying or selling a property without having Bob Meade represent me. He is the benchmark other realtors should strive for.

Michael B.: As I have said many times, having a knowledgeable realtor supporting you is the single most important part of selling your home. With Bob, you have the best of the best. His local knowledge of inventory, comparable properties, market trends, among other very important factors, is unmatched. We knew from day one with Bob we would sell our home quickly, and at the right price. Our home’s location made a potential sale tricky, however, Bob helped us find our buyer in just over 2 weeks!! From initial conversations to the final closing, we could not have been happier with Bob and with Century 21AA Realty. They are true professionals, and we feel, made all of the difference in the successful sale of our house.

COLORFUL EXPERIMENT - Fourth-graders in Jennifer Spizuco’s class at Deauville Gardens East Elementary School in the Copiague School District recently completed a hands-on science experiment to coincide with their unit on plant and animal structures. Filling a cup with water and blue dye, the students placed a white carnation and a celery stalk and predicted if the flower and celery would change color all the way up or only in the parts that were in water. At the end of the week, they were surprised to see their white flowers turning blue. Photo courtesy of: Copiague School District

UNITED IN RED - February 2nd is National Wear Red Day and both students and staff throughout the Copiague School District wore the color red to raise awareness and show support for the American Heart Association. The AHA’s Go Red for Women Campaign helps raise awareness about heart disease, the number one killer of women, causing one in three deaths each year. Photo courtesy of: Copiague School District

The district congratulates the following students: From the district’s elementary schools, Alexa Gourdette (flute) was chosen from Deauville Gardens East; Alyson Tenebro (flute) from Deauville Gardens West; and Daniella Jimenez (trumpet) from Great Neck Road. After learning about the earth’s major systems – atmosphere, hydrosphere, geosphere and biosphere – the students conducted the activity as part of the earth and space systems unit. The terrariums, which show how rock, water, air and life all act together in earth’s major systems, are an example of how the earth’s parts all work together. these children. Upon sponsorship, you will receive a photo and bio of the child you chose to sponsor. You will be able to write letters or send e-mails directly to the child to provide them with hopeful messages! Kevin and his wife often travel to Meru to visit the orphanage and welcome sponsors to travel along to meet firsthand the child they sponsor. Another way you can become involved is by hosting a craft fair right here on Long Island to sell Kenyan crafts made by the Meru Women’s Collective. You will be provided with the goods, and all the profits generated will go back to the children at the orphanage. Contact Kevin Mann for more information. On Febraury 18th, Hope Children’s Fund will host its first Gala at East Wind in Wading River! All are welcome to attend and enjoy a night out to support this charity and its cause. The Gala will include dinner, a unique art auction, music by the band X-Sessions and a possible Skype call with the children at their orphanage in Meru. Contact Kevin Mann to purchase your tickets now ($200/person) and be a part of something that truly matters!

For most of these students, English is not the first language spoken at home and, as a result, their parents do not understand English sufficiently enough to help them with their schoolwork. Cracking the Classics “Do not read, as children do, to amuse yourself; or, like the ambitious, for the purpose of instruction. No, read in order to live.” ~ Gustave Flaubert Winter being one of those seasons best suited for indoor activities, I have recently taken up the hobby of reading; well, by taken up, I mean I have ordered several selections with the intent of reading them (hopefully) before spring arrives. I always say I want to read at least one book a month; generally, this amounts to a single magazine, perhaps a chapter or two of a cast-aside novel from several years ago… rarely do I seem to make any considerable progress in this literary department. This year, on New Year’s Day in fact, I made it my mission to use one of my holiday gift cards to order a handful of the “classics” - The Wind in

the Willows, Walden, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass, and Wuthering Heights - a veritable collection straight from the pages of an old English department syllabus. Some, I had read bits and pieces of years ago; others, I had always wanted to peruse more thoroughly, but had never taken the opportunity to dive into. Of course, nearly six weeks later, and I have yet to make it past the introduction to The Wind in the Willows. An hour a night, I told myself. Simple. Just make it a habit, and the pages will fly by, I theorized. This is recreational reading - no obligation, no required deadline. Read at your leisure, because you want to. And still, somehow, the pile of books remains virtually untouched. Perhaps I should join a book club. Maybe I need the structure, the faux “assignment” to push me

along. Nightly chapter summaries, on the teacher’s desk by morning! But, in all seriousness, it is truly remarkable how difficult we find the task of simply enriching our lives in a cultural sense. Binge a series on Netflix over the course of a few days? Not a problem. Spend hours mindlessly browsing social media? Done. Priorities, indeed. As much as I never thought I would wish for winter to prolong, I am somewhat glad that another month remains to tackle this self-imposed task. Five weeks, to be precise. One book per week or so. Doable? Sure, with the proper focus. Such is the extent of my winter “To Do” list. Not a bad way to spend an evening. Don’t worry, dear readers, you shall have a full report of my progress - or lack thereof by next month. {Side note: they still make Cliff Notes, right?}

Hope Children’s Fund is an international non-profit that operates with the motto “Education Is Key.” For children in Kenya, this couldn’t be more true. Without an education and the ability to speak English, these children often lack the opportunity to rise above fetching water and cutting wood. Kevin Mann, Vice President of Hope Children’s Fund, explained, “The government in Kenya doesn’t have the resources to take care of the children in their country like the United States government does.” It is not shocking to see a very young child in Kenya hopelessly wandering the streets without family...hungry and just trying to survive. Hope Children’s Fund does something about this problem. In 2001, Hope Children’s Fund registered as a nonprofit and raised $40,000 through donations – precisely enough money to begin construction on an orphanage that stands high up on a hill in Meru, Kenya. By 2005, the orphanage opened and began transforming lives for children, many of whom had lost their parents in the AIDS epidemic. This orphanage, Jerusha Mwiraria Hope Children’s Fund Home, has a dining hall and a dormitory for boys and girls. It provides the children with shelter, steady meals and the opportunity to attend school. The children are shown family values and given chores to complete in order for them to gain life skills. They currently house 100 children and have had many success stories. If you would like to be part of another one of their success stories, you can! There are 22 orphans who still need to be sponsored through Hope Children’s Fund’s sponsorship program - $1/day or $365/year will help send these children to school so they have a better chance to succeed. Big Hearts, Little Hats Each month, the students in Christine Locher’s positive behavior class at Lindenhurst Middle School explore character traits and social skills. While exploring the ideals of selflessness and charity, the students researched the American Heart Association and its Little Hats Big Hearts program which collects

baby hats for babies born with congenital heart disease, in addition to raising awareness for living heart health. Expanding upon one student’s interest in crochet, the class took up the skill and put it to good use for the cause. The class set a goal to crochet 100 caps between the months of November and January

and surpassed that goal by 29 caps. The hats were collected by Michele Gervat, director of community health for the American Heart Association, who explained to the students that the caps would be used on babies in numerous Long Island hospitals.

Daniel St. Meets Darlene Kindergarten students at Daniel Street Elementary School in the Lindenhurst Union Free School District recently enjoyed a visit from Darlene Graham and the Shades of Green Band. For more than 20 years, Darlene Graham has shared

her family music with audiences throughout the United States and Canada. The performer and former elementary school music teacher engaged students through song, dance and audience participation. Students danced to the

music which incorporated children’s literature such as Eric Carle’s “The Very Hungry Caterpillar” and “Leave me Alone: A Tale of What Happens When You Stand Up to a Bully” written by Kes Gray and Lee Wildish.

Fairy Tale Reform School

Students of Albany Avenue Elementary School in the Lindenhurst Union Free School District recently explored the writing process with Jen Calonita, author of the “Fairy Tale Reform School” book series among others. Calonita spoke about her early days of writing as an entertainment journalist, a position she held for 10 years prior to writing her first young

adult series, “Secrets of My Hollywood Life.” She shared with the students how she came to write the current series which revolves around Gilly, a girl who made a bad choice and was sentenced to three months at Fairy Tale Reform School where her teachers are all reformed fairy tale villains. During each of the two school assemblies, the author explained the

process of writing and publishing a book, as well as, the ingredients for a good story such as engaging characters, an exciting premise, a conflict and “the ultimate villain.” Later in the day, Calonita expanded upon this information as she conducted a writer’s workshop session with fourth-grade students in teacher Jeff Ventura’s class.

Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone today announced that the county will be supporting the recruiting efforts of Ridgewells, one of the vendors for the U.S. Open Golf Championship, to fill over 550 temporary food service and hospitality jobs at the 118th U.S. Open Championship. To complement its recruiting efforts, the company will be working with St. Joseph’s College through the college’s Hospitality and Tourism Management program as

another avenue to generate additional interest. “The ultimate test in golf is returning to Suffolk County, Long Island,” said Suffolk County Executive Bellone. “I encourage anyone who is interested in seeking a temporary job or looking to take advantage of the historic experience to apply online as we look this make this another memorable event.” In partnership with the Suffolk County Department of Labor and the Suffolk County Department of Economic Development

and Planning, Ridgewells will manage the recruitment, hiring and training of all event staff to support the large scale catering operation at the U.S. Open. A mix of frontand-back of house catering positions are available that include tent supervisors, beverage managers, buffet managers, bartenders and servers, tent chefs, sous chefs, kitchen assistants, action station attendants, dishwashers, and operation helpers. This is the fifth time the championship is being

hosted at the historic golf course, which will be held from June 11th – 17th at Shinnecock Hills Golf Club in Southampton, New York. The golf championship is anticipated to generate between $120 million $130 million in economic impact for the region. This analysis is based on expected weekly attendance of over 200,000 people, which include

as much as seven times a day. Over time, this leads to built-up contaminants in the ductwork. Since your heating and cooling system is the lungs of your home, you want to keep it clear.

designing, building, programming and operating robots to play a floor game in an alliance format on a 12-foot by 12-foot field. This season, FIRST Tech Challenge teams across the world were asked to don their adventurers’ hats to create robots capable of retrieving opponent-colored jewels from platforms, scoring glyphs into crypto boxes, creating cipher patterns, moving “relics” to a recovery zone and parking their robots on “balancing stones.” During the FIRST Tech Challenge events, students demonstrate their problem-solving skills, creative thinking, teamwork, competitive play, sportsmanship and sense of community. Teams work to score points, awarded through accomplishing the aforementioned tasks, during 150 seconds of game play, which includes autonomous and drivercontrolled periods. Three teams from the FIRST Long Island Championship will

go on to the SuperRegional Championship Tournament “East” in Scranton, Pennsylvania, March 16th-18th, 2018. Teams at the SuperRegional will compete for the opportunity to advance to the FIRST Tech Challenge World Championship in Detroit, April 25th-28th, 2018. “One hundred fifteen local teams competed at regional tournaments this season for an opportunity to participate in the SBPLI Long Island Championship,” says Janet Anderson, Program Director and SBPLI/FIRST Long Island representative. “FIRST Tech Challenge has grown into a powerful program for students across Long Island, and we are excited to see which teams will continue on to the SuperRegional in Scranton as representatives of Long Island’s STEM talent.” For more information on SBPLI or FIRST Tech Challenge, please visit www.sbpli-lifirst.org.

Connecting in Copiague Second- and third-grade students, along with their families, from Great Neck Road Elementary School in the Copiague School District enjoyed an evening together at Family Literacy Night on February 6th. Students gathered in

their respective classrooms to enjoy the book “Dragon Was Terrible” by Kelly DiPucchio. After discussing their thoughts on the main character and his behavior with their teacher and peers, the students made their own

“dragon treats,” complete with green icing, horns and colored eyes to take home and enjoy. There was also a take-home worksheet that students could bring back to school for a special prize from their teacher.

Each year, the All Kids Fair brings fun and different reasons for kids and their families to attend their annual event. The April 29th All Kids Fair will continue in this tradition. QuackerJack, the Long Island Ducks’ mascot, will visit to the delight of children across Long Island. In addition, the lovely Alexa Cox, Miss Long Island Teen 2018, will be available for a meetand-greet. The All Kids Fair is a Long Island “happening” each spring. Since moving to its larger venue, the Hilton Long Island/ Huntington (also known as the Huntington Hilton), the Fair has been able to accommodate a bounce house, petting zoo, and additional vendors and classes, which was enjoyed by 2,500 people this past April. Children will enjoy a

large number of additional activities and “freebies,” including face painting, photo booth, balloon animals, popcorn, cotton candy, train tables, water ice samples, and an 8 ½ foot snake and other animals to touch. Admission is $5 per person and free for ages 2 and younger and includes everything listed. Ever year the fun-filled All Kids Fair offers exciting educational and health activities to interest kids and their families. The Fair offers choices for toddlers through high school, including kids who have special needs or are gifted. Over 80 exhibitor spaces and many classes provide valuable information. Exhibitors include schools, camps, after school activities, birthday party ideas, and college planning. Some of the many classes that children can share with their parents and

grandparents are drama, robots and a Boomers! Birthday Bash. Ganimet Brija of Coram, who attended the event in 2017, enthusiastically shared “My son had a blast, and everyone was so helpful and friendly.” Noshina Amhad of Valley Stream added, “I really love this event…already waiting for [the] next event.” Attendees who like to “pay forward” to charitable groups are encouraged to bring used and new books and money for donation to The Book Fairies, who will share them with children in need. Sleep Better, Stress Less (NAPSI)-Here’s eyeopening news: Recently published research from Oklahoma State University suggests that improving quality of sleep not only reduces stress, but also helps us manage everyday

stress. “When you’re stressed and tired, every aspect of your life is affected,” says lifestyle expert and spokesperson for the Better Sleep Council, Lissa Coffey. “Controlling stress

and getting a good night’s rest start with evaluating your lifestyle.” Dr. Douglas MacKay, N.D., vice president, scientific and regulatory affairs, Council for Responsible Nutrition,

agrees: “Eating a healthy diet, taking vitamins and other supplements, exercising regularly and getting adequate amounts of sleep are all part of a healthy lifestyle.” Here are more tips to

help you sleep better and stress less: 1. Eat a well-balanced diet. 2. Take your vitamins, including a daily multivitamin. Ask your doctor about other

supplements, like valerian, for healthy sleep. 3. Evaluate your mattress--consider replacing it if it’s five to seven years old or older.

Fire Island Lighthouse Happenings

The womb is a temporary vessel for an infant. The brain is a temporary vessel for all our thoughts. The heart is a temporary vessel for all our love. The body is a temporary vessel for the soul. Just like our houses which are temporary vessels for our bodies while we are living, the casket is only a temporary vessel to hold our bodies or the bodies of our loved ones after life ceases. Our thoughts become infinate when we pass our memories on to the next generation. Love becomes infinite when we pass it on to each other in the form of kindness, acceptance, and caring for one another. Our souls become infinite when we return to God. Our bodies and caskets become infinite when they are returned to the elements from whence they came, be it in the earth or by cremation. Therefore, when you select a casket for burial or cremation remember it is like a house only a temporary vessel to hold your loved one. Only that which cannot be seen is infinate. Just a thought to ponder. 338726N0214

Character Counts Each month, Deauville Gardens East Elementary School in the Copiague School District recognizes a different character trait to highlight to its student body. Good judgment was the character trait for January and students in Ann Marie Byrnes’ third-grade class put on a short play for the school

to demonstrate good judgment on Jan. 26. Students spoke to their peers and performed short skits about following the rules, being responsible, using kind words and making good choices. They reinforced the idea that “the choice is yours” when it comes to good judgment. Deauville Garden East

guidance counselor Lysa Mullady works with students throughout the school on different character traits. Students are given “character counts” cards when they are caught doing a kind act and recognized during the monthly assemblies.

Decades of Experience + Quality Service = Results

“Cindy was knowledgeable, informative, very direct. After meeting with her it was an easy decision to choose my broker. As a first time home buyer I had done extensive research on what to expect. Any time there was an area of the process I was not familiar with, Cindy took the time to make sure I was making informed decisions. Cindy was with me every step of the way and guided me to the right home. Many people say purchasing your first home is overwhelming and stressful but it was not due to my choice of partnering with Cindy of Century21 AA Realty.”

Nestor M., Lindenhurst

“Laurie Ann is a true professional. She is very efficient in what she does and very knowledgeable. Laurie Ann told us what we needed to do and everything went smoothly in the sale of our home. She made us feel very comfortable with everything. She would call to make sure everything was going in a timely manner. We loved how she put our needs first always.”

“Terry is an amazing Agent. She advised me on the value of my home in regards to current market conditions very accurately! She advised me of things which would come up before they did, and was ready and tackled them all. She was always on time for appointments, and went out of her way to help in the sale of my home. She also negotiated with prospective buyers in a very professional way and to my best advantage.”

Paul S., Lindenhurst

“Lori Gillam worked with me to sell our home. She is knowledgeable, honest and is very familiar with the area where I lived. She has a positive attitude and is such a friendly person to work with. Lori Gilliam takes the time to explain the total process of selling a home. She sets realistic sale prices. Lori Gilliam was there from the very start of the process until the day we closed. Lori Gilliam was always reachable and cares very much about her clients.”

“Liz Guglielmo is an exceptional real estate agent. Liz put my wife and myself at ease when we decided to sell our home. She explained what the market was calling for in the area in which my home was located by showing us other homes that sold and others that were listed for sale. Liz fully understands the real estate market extremely well. The advertising Liz did on our behalf of us was outstanding. Liz handled all negotiations with the prospective buyers real estate agent with my wife’s and my interest in mind. With Liz’s expertise we got the price we wanted.”

“As I have said many times, having a knowledgeable realtor supporting you is the single most important part of selling your home. From initial conversations to the final closing, we could not have been happier with Bob and with Century 21AA Realty.”

“Chris Dellaccio was extremely personable and attentive to our needs. He worked diligently and it was obvious he was looking out for our best interest. He was always on time, returned all phone calls, and answered all of our questions in detail. We are extremely grateful and more than satisfied with how he worked with us and for us. Our house was sold just two days after it was put on the market. Nothing could have gone more smoothly.”

“Joann is one of the nicest people I have ever met and especially one of the best I ever did business with. Can’t say enough good things about her. She was there for me at every turn. She answered my text and calls right away day and night. I would not have made it through without her patient presence. My experience with Joann was extraordinary. She gave me the confidence I needed to get through all the red tape of buying my home. She put everything in place for me and answered all my questions and helped me in so many ways to I understand what was going on. I appreciate her work ethic especially now a days when most people don’t give you the time of day, I feel blessed to have found her and my Narragansett Villa.”
