McCaffrey was joined by local representatives from the State, County, and Village at the Argyle Grill and Tavern in Babylon Village in an effort to pressure the Governor to lift the 10 PM curfew imposed on our struggling bars and restaurants.

(Bay Shore -SD4), Suffolk County Legislator Steve Flotteron (BrightwatersLD11), Babylon Village Mayor Mary Adams, Deputy Mayor Frank Seibert, and restaurateurs from Babylon, Bay Shore and across Suffolk County teamed up with Legislator McCaffrey to call on Governor Cuomo to repeal his order that

has been suffocating restaurants and bars in Suffolk County since last November. This segment of small businesses is among the hardest hit by the economic slowdown caused by COVID-19 restrictions and protocols.

The 10 PM restriction in place has only added to the struggles endured by these establishments.

The success of the BBCC is made possible primarily through their volunteers.

This Coalition has three staff members, so volunteers are so important to them, volunteering not because they have the time, but because they have the heart to do so. Thankfully, BBCC has been able to stay afloat and operating throughout the entire pandemic!

The BBCC is currently looking for volunteers to assist with virtual fundraising events. If you have some experience with social media (Facebook and Instagram) and are comfortable posting and boosting ads, please let the coalition know. They have several virtual events in the near future and can use some assistance!

Join the BBCC for a virtual webinar on February 11th at 6pm, called The Care Behind Your Care. Physicians from The Cancer Institute at Good Samaritan Hospital will host a “mock tumor board”, exhibiting the interdisciplinary approach to patient care. $20 per person includes a sherpa lined throw and tote bag!

The Babylon Breast Cancer Coalition (BBCC) was founded in 1993 by three friends who lived in Babylon.

Determined to fight against breast cancer by raising awareness and educating women, the BBCC with their dedicated volunteers undertook the task of completing a demographic survey to ascertain the incidence of breast cancer in Babylon.

From this, a volunteer driven grass-roots organization grew, which serves the entire Township of Babylon, including those with all gynecological cancers in addition to those with breast cancer. Today they provide direct patient services and support to help ease the burdens that breast and all gynecological cancers put on patients and their families/caregivers.

In addition to assisting in the basic needs of those battling cancer, they also reach out to the community at large, providing educational programs to encourage healthier lifestyles, which would decrease the still very high instance of these cancers in our community. Please note, if you do not live in this township, you can still reach out to the BBCC to find out who in your area can be of help to you.

The BBCC’s premier program is titled Lend a Helping Hand (LAHH). Since its inception in 1996, this unique patient service program provides much needed stress relief for breast cancer patients currently in treatment, as well as their families confronting diagnosis and ensuing treatments, such as chemotherapy and radiation. Later on, the BBCC expanded the LAHH program to include Babylon Township women undergoing treatment for all types of gynecological cancers.

We are all hoping the mild Winter we’ve been enjoying continues until Springtime.

However, just in case Mother Nature does not cooperate, we wanted to put out some information for our residents of things you should be aware of about Village snow removal.

No matter how great an accumulation of snow Winter brings, we in the Village of Lindenhurst remain prepared. The Village Department of Public Works takes great pride in keeping our roads clear and safe, quickly and efficiently.

DO YOUR PART! One of the most helpful things residents can do during a snow emergency is to get cars off the street.

Park in your driveway, if you have one, or ask a neighbor if you can share theirs – they may

welcome the request as more cars normally means less shoveling.

This simple act will make it so much easier for the snow plows to get through, which will mean our streets will be cleared sooner and more effectively.

DO NOT SHOVEL SNOW INTO ROADWAY! Additionally, please be aware that it is against Village Code to shovel/ blow snow into the street since it can create a road hazard. Try not to clear your driveway until plows are finished. When the street is completed, pile the snow to the right (your right when facing the street/your left when facing the house) of the driveway. This will avoid the snow being pushed back into your driveway if the plows need to come through again.

Remember, in a snowstorm the Village’s number one job is safety. Main roads and emergency snow routes are first priority for the plows; side streets to follow. Our Department of Public Works plow trucks are out at all hours, in all conditions, to clear the Village roadways so that we are able to go about the business of daily living within a reasonable amount of time.

Students Learn An ‘Eggs’ellent Lesson

The Super Bowl is the culmination of the National Football League season, which traditionally begins in early September and ends in late December or early January. The Super Bowl is one of the most anticipated professional sporting events each year.

In most years, around 75,000 fans pack the stadium hosting the game to watch the Super Bowl in person, and millions of people around the globe tune in to view the live simulcast, typically at private parties with friends or alongside fellow fans in sports bars.

However, this year Super Bowl watch parties are expected to look quite a bit different.

The 2021 Super Bowl may set the record for the smallest crowd in attendance due to the COVID-19 virus.

The game is slated to be played at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Fla., and ESPN reports that the NFL is planning for 20 percent seating capacity at the game. Fans are expected to wear masks and will sit in pods separated by six feet. That capacity

restriction would place around 13,000 fans in the stadium. Super Bowl I, which took place in 1967, was the only Super Bowl in history not to sell out, and that drew a crowd of 61,946 fans.

While scoring a ticket to the hottest game in town is often an expensive endeavor, with capacity restrictions for this year’s game it likely will be even more difficult for diehard fans to attend the game in person.

Instead, individuals can view the game on CBS or stream it through CBS All Access.

Here are some ways to safely celebrate while enjoying the game.

• Go cashless. For those who will be at Raymond James Stadium for the big game, cash is not king. The NFL has partnered with Visa to employ cashless payment systems for everything at the venue. In addition, there will be reverse ATMs to turn cash into pre-paid cards to use for purchases.

• Order in. The Super Bowl is one of the biggest nights for pizza sales and other takeout. Fans can make it even more so by ordering from their

favorite restaurants — many of which have been hit hard during the pandemic.

• Keep gatherings small. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the World Health Organization and other public health advisory groups continue to maintain that social distancing is the best way to help curb the spread of COVID-19. That means keeping crowds small and separate. If possible, host the party outside, as the virus does not spread as easily outdoors as it does indoors. Encourage guests to dress warmly and provide heat sources, like fire pits or propane heaters.

• Host a digital watch party. Video conferencing apps have been used for everything from work to school. Fans can gather online and watch the game simultaneously, but in their own homes.

Share the cheers, jeers and some beers over an internet connection.

The Super Bowl may be a bit different this year, but fans can still root for their favorite teams and enjoy this often thrilling game.

Second grade students in Heather Paglino and Jennifer Corrigan’s class at William Rall Elementary School in the Lindenhurst Union Free School District recently explored the message of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in a unique way. As a class, the in-person students and those learning remotely,

examined two eggs, one brown and one white. The students compared and contrasted the eggs and documented the physical characteristic on a graphic organizer. The teacher then broke each egg open and students once again documented their observations. Together, the students discovered that

despite looking different on the outside, the eggs were the same on the inside. Parallels were made between the eggs and people.

This lesson came on the heels of the students studying Dr. King and his efforts during the civil rights movement.

The Kiwanis Club of Lindenhurst officially launched it’s 2021 Hometown Heroes Banner Program in partnership with the Town of Babylon offering residents the opportunity to honor service men and women with a commemorative banner to be displayed in the hamlets of North Babylon, West Babylon, Deer Park, Wheatley Heights, North Amityville, Wyandanch and Copiague. Each year, American football’s championship game is one of the most-watched television broadcasts across the globe. The Super Bowl might not kick off until early evening in the eastern United States, but the day’s festivities typically begin much earlier than that.

Super Bowl parties typically bring people from all walks of life together. Football fans mingle with non-fans who are more anxious to see the famed Super Bowl advertisements than they are the big game, but one thing all Super Bowl viewers can enjoy together is the food.

Food is as much a part of Super Bowl Sunday as the game itself. That should be comforting in a year when Super Bowl parties figure to be atypical as the world continues to confront the COVID-19 pandemic.

Large gatherings likely aren’t on the docket for Super Bowl LV, and the game itself may be played in a largely empty stadium, but fans at home can still cook up traditional Super Bowl

The focus of Super Bowl Sunday fare is not often about an entrée, but rather the bevy of snacks and starters people can enjoy in small doses throughout the game. That makes the big game a good fit for scaled back celebrating.

This recipe for “BeerBraised Meatballs” from “Cooking With Beer” by the editors at Publications International, Ltd. makes 20 meatballs, making it ideal no matter the size of your Super Bowl Sunday party.

1 bottle (12 ounces) light-colored beer, such as a lager 11⁄2 cups tomato sauce 1 cup ketchup 2 tablespoons paste

Legislator Flotteron, who represents LD-11 in West Islip, said “Our local restaurants and taverns have really been backbone of our main streets as shopping has changed due to COVID-19 … closing our businesses at 10 o’clock is causing our main streets to shudder.

People cannot go out any earlier for dinner, and these restaurants need more time to spread patrons out.”

“As the words go, follow the science. Well the science says they are leaving at 10 o’clock and going to house parties. Let’s keep them at restaurants being managed by restaurateurs who know the rules who have been doing everything safely, and let’s keep the economy going and let’s keep our main streets alive. These are the groups who support our events, our Little Leagues, our Boy Scouts, and many more local organizations. They are our backbone, and we need to support them by being open and following

the science that says the danger of spread is not in our restaurants.”

Village of Babylon Mayor Mary Adams added “We know that basketball can be played, we know that wrestling can begin.

What’s wrong with getting rid of this curfew on our restaurants? The closure of restaurants negatively effects every one of our businesses, as it does the mental health of those not being able to get out and socialize.

When you look at the metrics and the statistics, you are looking at a less than 2% infection rate in our restaurants- it makes no sense. People are not going to the bars because they close at 10 o’clock, or they are leaving the bars and going into private gatherings where we found out the spread of the virus is really occurring.

We want to make sure we are keeping people in safe environments where there is some law and order, where the restaurant and bar owners are making sure their patrons follow all the safety regulations and guidelines.”

Mike McElwee of Local Burger in Bay Shore said “At 10:01pm, there is a crowd of people in the streets saying ‘where are we going, whose house are we going to?’ We’ve made every adjustment since we were told we would be shutting down for just two weeks back in March. We’ve jumped through hoops to meet the State standards.

The SLA has visited me three times in four days, and each time we were compliant. When you shut down at 10 PM, the bartender and 35 other people are going to house with no social distancing or masks. If you let us stay open until 1 AM, they will be going home. If you can trust us at 8 PM, I don’t see why you can’t trust us at 11 PM. Bring on the enforcement, come in. check us- we’re all following the rules and all we want is a chance to survive.”

New York State Senator Phil Boyle added “We just had a press conference in Albany the other day, where we gave a list of bills we could support to help restaurant and tavern owners at this time. There is nothing more important we could do than to get rid of this 10 PM curfew. Governor Cuomo, expand the hours and let them have another seating. That will save jobs and it will keep our restaurants and taverns open, and it will save New York’s economy.”

The overwhelming opinion of restaurant owners is that they can deal with COVID-19 Enforcement and even some of the reduced occupancy requirements, but if the 10 PM curfew continues, it will be too much for these establishments to overcome.

Start by choosing flowers that are either still in bud form or are freshly bloomed.

Dry the flowers out as quickly as possible to prevent browning.

Place the flower between two pieces of white, nontextured paper. Then place all

within the pages of a book. Depending on the size of the book, you may be able to press more than one flower at a time. Place other books on top to weigh down the book with the flowers inside. Change the moisture blotting sheets every few days.

After two to three weeks, the flowers will be completely dry and flat. Remove the flowers carefully using tweezers or fingertips.

Store the fresh flowers in a cool, dry place or consider framing them in a shadow box.
