Taste for Books Students at Great Neck Road Elementary School in the Copiague School District took a bite out of literacy, not literally but figuratively when the school held its first book tasting on December 15th and 16th.

With the library transformed into a café – complete with redand-white checkered tablecloths and moodsetting tealights – the students were invited to sample all the wonderful books available at their fingertips. Donning her chef hat, chef Louise Gravina, also known as Great Neck Road’s literacy staff developer, invited students into the café to get a taste of the literary delights.

With them came my then eight year-old mother and my four year-old uncle, followed a number of years later by my aunt; and thus the perfect “starter” home became the setting for the decades of memories which followed, not only for them but for the next generation as well – myself included.

Little did they know that the nearly vacant block they moved onto would grow into the close-nit community it is today, filled with neighbors and friends, and even a few family members, on the surrounding streets.

Fifty-six years later, the house that became a home

to us all is no longer “in the family,” passed on to another young couple, moving from the city, looking to begin their lives in the suburbs in much the same way that my grandparents had all those years ago. Sure, it was only a house; but it served as so much more to all those who had the pleasure of stepping foot across its threshold.

And so, with the end of 2016 comes the closing of yet another chapter for my family. Life goes on, to be sure; but some things leave a sizable imprint so that life – as it was known, and lived – is never quite the same.

Farewell to #580…

Great Neck Road Elementary School in the Copiague School District transformed its gymnasium into a winter wonderland, complete with winter-weather activities for all to enjoy.

During their physical education classes on the week of December 19th, students engaged in a variety of different activities designed around the theme.

Rotating

through different stations, students participated in a toy toss, tried to solve a polar puzzle and pulled their peers across the floor during Santa’s sleigh ride.

On the Great Neck Road “ice rink,” students played holiday hockey and used sliding pads to “skate” around the rink. There was also a downhill ski area for students to play on the Wii Balance Board to simulate skiing.

Resolutions can also be traced to ancient Rome. The Romans were instrumental in creating a more formal calendar, and the start of the new year was moved from March to January (January and February were added to the Roman calendar under the rule of Numa Pompilius).

Julius Caesar wanted to honor January’s namesake, Janus, the Roman god of beginnings.

Janus’ two faces enabled him to look back into the past and forward into the future.

Sacrifices to Janus were made, and worshipers exchanged gifts

with one another. A custom of setting resolutions began during this period as well, with Romans promising to be good to one another.

Eventually, these resolutions were funneled into prayers and fasting when Christianity was adopted by the Roman Empire.

Other religious parallels include the Jewish holiday of Yom Kippur, which is a day of atonement and reflection as celebrants examine their wrongdoings and seek forgiveness and to behave better moving forward. Yom

Kippur follows Rosh Hashanah, Judaism’s own new year.

Resolutions also may be loosely tied to Medieval times.

During this time, knights took a “peacock vow” at the end of the Christmas season. Each year, these knights would reaffirm their commitment to chivalry.

Today New Year’s resolutions are largely a secular tradition, but they’re still connected to a desire to be a good person and put one’s best self forward.

Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School held its first Poetry Out Loud Competition on December 15th.

Six students – Sophia Hall, Cameren Jackson, Tiana Roe, Samantha Sattler, Sarah St. Jean, and Brianna Uribe – competed during the two rounds of poetry recitation. Each student took to the front of the class to recite two poems of their choice based on the list provided

by Poetry Out Loud.

Sophia Hall was

named the winner for her recitation of “The Daring One” and “Ode,” while Sarah St. Jean was chosen as runner-up for her recitation of “Siblings” and “Revenge.”

The pair will compete in the regional finals at Nassau Community College in February.

Judges included Walter G. O’Connell High School English teachers Faith Gottlieb and Daniel Barressi, Social Studies Chairperson Michelle Penyy, and Walter G.

O’Connell Copiague High School Principal Joseph Agosta. English teacher and Poetry Slam adviser Anastasia Kourtis served as the accuracy judge.

Poetry Out Loud encourages students to learn about great poetry through memorization and recitation. This program helps students master public speaking skills, build self-confidence, and learn about literary history and contemporary life.
