n December 14th, fourth and fifth-grade students of William Rall Elementary School took part in the school level of the annual Scripps National Spelling Bee. The students qualified to participate in the school-level bee after winning their class bees. After several rounds, only two contestants remained – fourth-grader Damiano Drucker and fifth-grader Italy Jackson. Damiano emerged as the winner.

Holiday Festivities

The parade and tree lighting ceremony were just two components of a larger fun-filled day of holiday-related activities.

Earlier in the afternoon, the Lindenhurst Chamber of Commerce held its

The Children’s Center at United Cerebral Palsy of Greater Suffolk Inc. brought Rockefeller Center to its students this holiday season. The school hosted a tree lighting ceremony with a special visit from Santa on Friday, December 11th.

Principal Sherri Glazer said that it is difficult for students to attend events like the Rockefeller Tree Lighting due to limitations, but this year students enjoyed a spectacular event that was just as fun.

Christmas time is here.

The days and weeks and months of planning and preparation, of shopping and wrapping and decorating and baking, have all led to this brief window of time, from Christmas Eve through Christmas Day, which lends itself to all sorts of magical moments and memories.

These are the days we remember for years to come, the snapshots we savor, the recipes we pass down from generation to generation.

Say what you will about the commercialism and chaos that has engulfed our society – this the time we

can recapture the true spirit of the season.

Speaking of commercialism, anyone who attempted to purchase Adele tickets in the last week or so was faced with the reality that, unless you have thousands of dollars at your disposal to splurge on a pair of seats at MSG, you had best sit back and enjoy that $15 CD and accept the fact that live performances are becoming increasingly out of reach for the average consumer.

For me, two straight days of manically refreshing my browser during both the advance sale and general sale led to nothing but wasted time and ample frustration.

‘Tis the season, indeed.

The upside?

In

the grand scheme of things, being deprived of live entertainment (temporarily, as I haven’t given up quite yet) isn’t the end of the world. As we prepare to turn the page on yet another year, we should give thanks for the important things – our health, our loved ones, the ability to celebrate with family and friends… perspective.

And with that, I wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Exceptional Service Lindenhurst Union Free School District recognized 150 students with the prestigious Presidential Service Award, given to those who complete a minimum of 50 hours of community service. This is the largest number of students ever recognized in the district.

The students were honored at a recent PTA council meeting, during which Kristi Reynolds (representing

Assemblywoman Kimberly Jean-Pierre) presented certificates, pins and a letter from the President written on official Whitehouse letterhead, which she read aloud to the students.

“You should all be proud of yourselves for going the extra mile and giving back to the community,” said Reynolds.

GIVING TREE - Mrs. Reyes’ Kindergarten class at St. Martin of Tours in Amityville recently collected wishing ornaments off the Giving Tree in the St. Martin of Tours Church. The children have been earning money at home to contribute to this Giving Tree fund since early November. A number of the children also presented the gifts at mass on Sunday December 13th.

Honoring the Community

On Sunday, May 18th, Matthew J. Spadone was on his way home from Tanner Park. He witnessed a motorcycle with two people riding west on Montauk Highway get cut off by a dark-colored sedan.

This caused the motorcycle to swerve into oncoming traffic; the passenger was thrown off and her leg was run over by the back tire of the bike.

Upon seeing this, Matthew ran into the roadway where the passenger was laying and screaming in pain.

He yelled, “I have to get

you out of the street!”

Meanwhile, the motorcycle driver had driven up over the sidewalk and fallen off the bike.

As cars were zooming by, Matthew pulled and rolled the passenger onto the sidewalk and straightened her body to help give her some relief.

Someone called the Copiague Fire Department, and they took the passenger to Good Samaritan Medical Center. Upon arrival at the hospital, she informed the ambulance driver that a young man passing by, with glasses, a gray sweatshirt

and backpack had pulled her to the sidewalk.

The driver of the ambulance recalled seeing Matthew at the scene and recognized him as his neighbor, and contacted him when he got home. Matthew had not mentioned a word of the incident to his parents.

This spring, in Boy’s Life “Scouts in Action,” the story of Matthew’s good deed will be printed.

As a result of his actions, Matthew was recently honored with the Town of Babylon’s Highest Honor Heroism Award.

Good Samaritan Hospital’s annual Christmas Tree Lighting was a huge success.

Unseasonably warm temperatures brought more than 750 community members and hospital staff together for this year’s joyous event.

Festivities included

a Snowman bounce house, visit from Santa and his elves, Christmas carnival and photo booth, refreshments and performances by St. John the Baptist High School choir and Babylon’s Royal Dance Company.

The event concluded with everyone gathered

for the blessing of the nativity offered by one of the hospital’s chaplains, Fr. Augustine D’Souza and Sr. Ellen Moore, seen with Good Samaritan Hospital Executive Vice President and Chief Executive Officer Nancy Simmons.
