Senior to Senior Local senior citizens connected with the senior class of Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School during the annual Senior-to-Senior Dinner on December 5th in the high school’s cafeteria. Under the direction of the Class of 2018 advisers Samuel Gonzalez and Tammy Toro, the senior class spent many weeks

organizing and preparing for the festivities. With both groups dressed in their best holiday attire, the evening began with a medley of holiday-themed singalongs performed by the school’s Madrigal Choir, under the direction of Gina Occhiogrosso. The students served the senior citizen guests with dozens of different food choices,

some catered dishes and others homemade by teachers. After dinner, the guests and students made their way to the dance floor to enjoy some time together. With raffle tickets distributed at the door, the senior citizens each had a chance to win one of more than three dozen prizes.

County Executive Bellone joined Legislator Kara Hahn and the Suffolk Association for Habilitation and Residential Care (AHRC) to meet the members of AHRC who maintain the greenhouse by growing, tending and selling plants. The Suffolk Association for Habilitation and Residential Care serves children and adults with developmental disabilities by providing programs, services and opportunities for them to grow and contribute to society in meaningful ways. Last on the List up yet. Alas, my apartment doesn’t allow for a furry fourlegged friend; besides, my little baby betta Spud would be jealous. They say people have become increasingly thoughtless in the age of technology, opting to do most of their shopping online and “mail it in” when it comes to selecting the perfect present. I, for one, still prefer to personally browse the stores, even if I have a fairly good idea of what I want to buy. Nothing quite compares to that personal touch. So why have I barely begun this process with less than a week remaining ‘til Christmas? An excellent question, deflected by a focus on de-twinkling my flickering window lights, decorating my balcony just in time for the annual cleaning-of-thegutters to completely cover everything in a ﬁne black

layer of dirt and ground-up leaves, and contemplating how to shove all things not Christmas-related into any available corner of the closet. Gift shopping, or even listmaking, not so much. And yet somehow, some way, everything manages to get done each year… even if, at times, it has included wrapping presents in the corner of my bedroom as company arrives on Christmas Eve. No need for ribbons and bows, as long as the box is (relatively) covered and the right person winds up with the appropriate package. In everything, it’s the thought that counts. With that, sending thoughts to all of our readers for a healthy, happy holiday season. Here’s hoping you all receive everything on your wish list.

Just ﬁve days until Christmas, and I suppose I should begin my shopping soon. It’s funny, with the sole exception of Black Friday when I purchased precisely one gift - I haven’t done so much as compile a list in the days that have elapsed. Perhaps it’s because, save for the usual collection of gift cards and standard annual favorites, there is rarely an occasion when anyone can offer a suggestion of what they would like. Not that I am much better when it comes to this. Most years, a gift card is just as good as any particular object I can come up with, or maybe tickets to an upcoming concert or ballgame. Of course, there are always my two standbys - a trip to Disney World to “meet Mickey,” and a puppy. Yes, the 3 year-old child in me hasn’t quite grown

doctors and hospitals and also teaches the students about injury prevention. Stony Brook Children’s Hospital representative Erin Zazzara ﬁrst spoke to the classes about different safety tips, such as wearing a helmet during sporting activities, keeping safe in the car and always wearing a seatbelt. The students – who were dressed in their scrubs and equipped with their masks – then performed proper medical treatments on a “sick” stuffed animal or doll they had brought in from home. After visiting the waiting room, they worked to diagnose their stuffed companions; ﬁrst checking their weight and temperature before applying bandages and dispensing proper medicines based on their conditions. The students each performed different job functions, such as doctor, nurse, receptionist or pharmacist, throughout the workshop.

Harmony Café is a non-profit with a mission to reduce food insecurity by serving healthy, yet affordable, meals to all who walk through their door. They’re a proud member of and are based off the established nonprofit restaurant business model developed by the One World Everyone Eats Foundation. When one enters Harmony Café, they will notice there’s a suggested donation of $10, but guests have the option to pay less, pay more to pay it forward, pay nothing, or opt to volunteer at the Café in exchange for a meal - the option of earning a meal without being plagued by the stigma of a handout. This café currently offers one 2 ½ hour event (a fresh meal and entertainment)

on the second Wednesday of each month. They operate out of the VFW Hall at 32 Edwards Street in Patchogue; but with a heart full of passion and the energy of a lion, founder and director Rosemarie McCarthy has a goal to open a storefront for the Café which will operate five days a week for lunch and dinner. Volunteers are needed in the following areas: event planning; volunteer coordinating; servers and kitchen help; community outreach and fundraising. Most importantly, volunteer board members are needed. Sharing Stories First-graders in Katianne Howe’s class at Deauville Gardens West Elementary School in the Copiague School District celebrated their writing accomplishments with a slumber party on December 8th.

Dressed in their coziest pajamas and armed with their fluffiest blankets, the students shared their personal narrative writings in small groups. Using just their flashlights, each student read their story to their group. After listening

to each author, the students told each other what they liked best about each story. They then rotated groups around the room until everyone had the chance to share stories.

PROCLAMATION PRESENTED - Senator John Brooks presented a congratulatory proclamation to Frank A. Smith Jr., on Sunday, November 26th, as Smith ascended to the rank of Eagle Scout at his BSA Troop 1421 Eagle Scout Court of Honor in Lindenhurst. The new Eagle Scout, who became a Boy Scouts of America Scout in September of 2009, has earned 40 Merit Badges in subjects ranging from American Heritage, Archaeology, and Environmental Science, to Space Exploration, Crime Prevention, Genealogy and Engineering. Smith, Jr. was joined by family members including his father,Troop 1421 Scoutmaster, Frank A. Smith Sr., and his mother and siblings.

Lit Circles & Life Skills

Hundreds of local runners recently took to the streets of the Town of Babylon to participate in the annual Run for the Warriors hosted by Councilman Tom Donnelly. Participants of all ages included veterans, their

loved ones and others who wanted to honor the sacrifices made by the members of our military overseas. A number of wounded veterans participated in the run, which included three routes of varied distances

(10K, 5K and 1 mile), by riding hand and foot cycles. Many participants honored loved ones in the military, some of whom gave the ultimate sacrifice, by carrying signs and American flags as they completed the course.

Eighth graders at Saints Cyril and Methodius School in Deer Park get ample opportunity to flex their creative muscles while developing teambuilding skills and learning to work cooperatively within a group. Mrs. Judy Keeler, veteran SSCM Middle School teacher uses a studentcentered reading strategy called Literature Circles. Student teams work together to select a book that they will read and then each student plays a specific role in each “Lit Circle,” allowing the group to work together to analyze

the story line and present their take on the piece of literature they’ve read. Mrs. Keeler introduces the concepts to the students as 7th graders and as they become more experienced in this highly interactive and collaborative method of bringing literature to life, by 8th grade, the students’ presentations gain some serious momentum. Their sometimes heated debates and active involvement in showcasing the story line for their fellow students are clear evidence of how engaged these young adults are

in the reading process, something often lacking in Middle School students today. SSCM’s Lit Circles allow young minds to think analytically about the works they are reading. Further, for these students preparing to make their way to high school within the coming year, the process also allows them to take responsibility for their own learning and take ownership of the outcomes of their study habits and collaborative work - life skills they will take with them for the long haul.
