SHEDDING THE MEDS - New York State Senator Michael Venditto hosted a Cell Phones for Soldiers donation program and a “Shed the Meds” Drug Drop Off Program in Lindenhurst with Senator Phil Boyle. Hundreds of unused, expired or unwanted prescription medication were dropped off to the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Department for safe disposal. Thanks to all who participated!

Dr. Barbara A. Donnellan, Coordinator of Guidance for the Lindenhurst Union Free School District, has been elected as President of the New York State School Counselor Association, effective July 1st, 2015.

NYSSCA represents approximately 7,000 school counselors at every level throughout the state. In her new role, Dr. Donnellan leads the Executive Board of NYSSCA in promoting the work of school counselors as they work to support the achievement of district goals.

Joshua Lewis-Jefferson, a 2015 graduate of Saint Anthony’s High School and lifelong Lindenhurst resident recently reached a milestone that few other students can ever even imagine obtaining. LewisJefferson has graduated with the distinction of never missing a day of

the first annual Vocabulary Parade in which they selected a vocabulary word from the school’s provided vocabulary list and designed costumes that would portray the meaning of their word. The students then took part in a parade through the school’s hallways for all of their classmates and peers to see.

At Daniel Street, Kindergarten students finished up their unit on ocean life with a visit from Cornell Cooperative Extension’s Sea Safari program. During the program they explored sea life including clams, mussels, mud snails, sea stars and horseshoe crabs. Students of Nicole Fellin’s kindergartenfirst grade class at Daniel Street researched various career paths and presented a fashion show for their parents donning the costume of their chosen career. From soldiers to dentists, the students proudly pranced down the runway to the sound of their parents’ cheers.

William Rall students in grades three through five explored writing with Jen Calonita, author of the young adult novel “Flunked.” Jen spoke about her early days of writing, shared information about her elementary school experiences and how they shaped her as an adult author.

Lastly, before walking across the stage at their fifth-grade moving up ceremony, Alleghany students walked along school sidewalks lined with red tulips. Months prior, the tulip bulbs were planted during Red Ribbon Week as a reminder to live drug free and healthy lives.

On July 17th, Suffolk County Legislator Kevin McCaffrey joined hundreds of patriots from points near and far in the Town of Babylon’s Soldier Ride to support the Wounded Warrior Project.

In addition to the Soldier Ride celebrating its 8th Anniversary, it also witnessed a 10% increase in rider participation.

The event kicked off at the Town of Babylon Town Hall, where riders and countless supporters gathered in anticipation of the day’s activities.

During the opening ceremony, the wounded warriors participating in the ride were appropriately spotlighted; this group included warriors from Israel and the United Kingdom. The warriors received a thunderous applause coupled with proud cheers of “USA! USA!” The riders subsequently took off for the 25 mile journey accompanied by police and other public safety personnel.

En route to the finish line at Overlook Beach, riders enjoyed well-deserved respites at St. John the Baptist High School and Lindenhurst Middle

School.

“The Soldier Ride is a very special event, as it not only supports our nation’s wounded warriors, but brings so many great people together,” said McCaffrey. “It was an honor to ride, and it was great to see our veterans along with our allies from Israel and the U.K. I very much look forward to riding again next year.”

The kindergarten/first grade students of Lauren Gilhuley’s Extended School Year Summer Program class at Daniel Street Elementary School in the Lindenhurst Union Free School District celebrated summer by decorating “teddy bear cupcakes” in which the bears were enjoying a beach day.

The lesson began with Mrs. Gilhuley reading the book “Copy Me, Copy Cub”

by Richard Edward, which lead to a group reading

of the poem, “Teddy Bear, Teddy Bear.” Students then used Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS) images to illustrate the sequence of directions they would be following.

Step by step, they added to their cupcakes until the delicious finished product was ready for tasting! The lesson culminated in a “Teddy Bear Picnic” in which students ate with their own teddy bears under a tree and together the class read more stories involving bears.

This lesson was one of several hands-on lessons for the class, including the making of ice cream as well as the creation of an ice cream book and ice cream painting using puff paint that the students made using equal parts shaving cream and glue.

As the extended School Year summer program continues, the students will undoubtedly participate in similar and enjoyable hands on activities.

Shoes For All, the not for profit agency that collects new and gently worn shoes for those in need in our community recently donated 300 pairs of shoes to veterans at the Veterans Stand Down event at the American Legion Post 390, 160 Marvin Avenue in Hempstead.

The event allowed veterans and their famlies to pick out 300 pairs of shoes to help them in their time of need.

“We were grateful

to be able to help out these veterans who gave of themselves for our freedom...” Said Dr. Mary Carlson DPM, founder of Shoes For All. “...it is a great opportunity to give something they need back to them.”

The shoes were collected at recent donation events.

“The volunteers and donors don’t always get to see the end result of how their work and donations really affect a person’s life. It’s always a heartwarming experience,”

Recovery Seminars The South Shore Recovery Coalition is providing free seminars in Nassau and Suffolk County for homeowners that may have been underpaid by the National Flood Insurance Plan.

In August, the South Shore Recovery Coalition will be holding meetings in the community on how to MAXIMIZE your flood claim and how to NAVIGATE the many issues that may arise if you reopen your NFIP claim.

Throughout our lives whenever we or someone close to us has a major event, i.e. birth, first birthday, Holy Communion, Graduation, Bar Mitzvah, Wedding, 25th Anniversary, holidays, etc. to commemorate such events we celebrate with a ceremony. Some of the ceremonies are elaborate affairs that take months if not years to plan, some are simple family only affairs but there is always a ceremony. For some reason, many have come to think the death of an individual does not call for any ceremony to commemorate or celebrate the life of the deceased.

All too often I hear people say “I do not wish to be a burden or bother anyone, just cremate me and spread my ashes in the ocean,” or I hear the family come in and say “he was a simple person who did not want anything, just a cremation and bury the ashes in the garden.” Although these procedures are expedient, in my opinion it is not the right thing to do for the survivors or the deceased.

I am not saying that you must have a traditional funeral with a viewing and a funeral mass but I am saying some type of ceremony should take place to commemorate and celebrate the life of the deceased. I have assisted in wonderful ceremonies that took place in the individual’s home with a small gathering of friends to reminisce about the deceased. I have helped families coordinate funeral services and catering for over 300 people in attendance.

I have also providied information for the family to do their own personal ceremony without anyone else present. The harsh truth is that within three generations or less no one will remember any of us, but we all should take at least a few moments out of our busy lives to remember those whom we loved and celebrate their lives.
