On April 19th, from 12-2 p.m., at Shore Road Park in Lindenhurst, volunteers from Adopt A House and Long Island Volunteer Center will host a special event for Sandy survivors. Attendees will be able to choose three bushes or shrubs to add color to their gardens.

The plants are salt water tolerant and are meant to adapt to the south shore areas. They may also take home a “Star of Hope.”

These are handmade stars by children that are hung in disaster areas to bring hope and strength to people.

In addition, disaster preparedness kits will be available that contain valuable information about what to do in case another disaster is predicted to strike.

Dear Parents and Guardians, Over the last few years, education has been approaching a crossroads. Pressure has increased on students, parents and teachers regarding high-stakes testing. These forces are becoming more prevalent in our classrooms. I have been a teacher for 21 years and have witnessed young creative minds turned into data points for the State.

This detrimental change was haphazardly thrust upon children, teachers and administrators.

Immediate concern was apparent from all stakeholders: many parents were unable to assist their children with homework because of a lack of rational logic; teachers were forced to spend tremendous portions of the year on “test prep”; and administrators were not given proper training or funding to help implement new standards.

In response to the State forcing districts to comply by holding funding hostage, a parental movement has arisen - a group of parents who will not allow their children to be defined by a score. They have chosen to “opt-out” their children from taking the grade 3 - 8 ELA and Math assessments. The “opt-out” movement has grown and continues to gain momentum. I urge you to take a moment if you have not done so already - and fortify your position as to whether or not you feel the State’s over-reliance on testing is right for your child. Visit the opt-out web sites and gather the information you need to make an informed choice for your child and/or children.

It would be inappropriate for teachers to advise parents to refuse the test. I feel it would be equally inappropriate if I did not ask you to make an informed decision. If you should choose to refuse the test, please do so in accordance with proper guidance. Send a letter prior to the start of the testing.

There are many letters on the internet from which you may choose.

Time for Buddy: The Sequel. As some of my more loyal readers may recall, I recently adopted my very own Betta fish, LAST HOPE ANIMAL RESCUE Buddy. He’s currently 3300 Beltagh Avenue, Wantagh • 631.425.1884 one and a half months old in time-spent-in-myfishbowl years, which has already surpassed the lifespan of most of my previous goldfish, surely a good sign.

expectantly. And then there’s the chewing.

The adorable motion he makes when consuming his special Betta flakes is nothing short of precious.

Who knew fish had teeth!

Aside from his daily meal, Buddy seems content to swim endless laps around his prized plant decoration, occasionally knocking it from the gravel in his mad exuberance. Once exhausted, he generally settles under one of the branches for a little floating shut-eye – with eyes wide open of course.

That usually only lasts until the instant he spies me, as even the slightest

prospect of food ends any siesta.

Sure, he may not be as entertaining as a puppy or kitten or some other furry critter, but Buddy provides his own unique level of amusement from beyond the bowl. I think he’s adjusted quite well to life as a member of my household. Of course, that may be said for anyone who feeds him but… I still say Buddy and I have developed a special bond.

Here’s hoping for many more milestones celebrated with my new fishy friend – and many more meals consumed together!

Lindenhurst Village Clerk-Treasurer Shawn Cullinane recently attended the annual Tree City USA Awards Ceremony in Albany, NY to receive the Village’s 31st Annual Tree City USA Award designation.

The award is given by the National Arbor Day Foundation to those communities that demonstrate a

commitment to tree planting, maintenance, observance of Arbor Day and public awareness and education about the importance of trees in our communities.

Mr. Cullinane was also a featured speaker at the Awards Ceremony, describing the Village’s tree dedication program, outreach to the community, and involvement in

Tree City USA maintaining a healthy and vibrant urban forest.

“It was an honor to represent the Village Board and the residents of Lindenhurst at this event,” stated Mr. Cullinane.

Music Video Contest On October 2nd, 2014, Suffolk County launched the bullying awareness website, which can be found at www. suffolkstopbullying.org.

Legislator Sarah Anker invites Suffolk County students ages 13-18 to participate in a music video contest, in an effort to help address the concerns of bullying.

“According to 2010 Bullying Statistics, 160,000 children miss school each day for fear of being bullied,” said Legislator Anker, County Chairwoman of Education and Information Technology Committee.

“Having been a victim of bullying myself, I understand how important it is to speak up.”

By working with Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone, Suffolk County’s Information Technology Department, Department of Health, Youth Bureau

and the Suffolk County Police Department, Legislator Anker initiated the creation of a bullying awareness website.

The website includes comprehensive bullying awareness resources and information for students, parents, and faculty.

As of 2012, New York State requires all public school districts to designate a school staff member as a Dignity Act Coordinator (DAC) to protect students from harassment, discrimination and bullying. This website includes a list of each school district’s DAC, which is provided as a resource for students who may encounter bullying.

Entry submissions are due on May 1st, 2015. The music video clip must communicate the issue of bullying and illustrate ways that their peers can address this serious issue.

We are looking for a short

video clip posted through a YouTube account to be no more than 3 minutes in length.

For instance, a grave opening in St. Charles Cemetery was $350 in 1984 and is now $1995, Monday thru Friday, $2475 on Saturday. Thus if the funeral home where you prepay your funeral does not guarantee the cemetery costs you will owe $2475 for a Saturday funeral at St. Charles Cemetery.

On Track For Success

Christopher Tocco’s grandmother had been sick for almost her whole life. She stayed at the hospital so many times, he says, that “they could have added her name to the hospital room door.”

But if ever there was a silver lining, it was the inspiration Tocco found in the quality of treatment

his grandmother received, from the EMT workers to the clinical specialists. “She was taken care of very well and wouldn’t have lived as long, if she had not gotten the medical care that she did.”

That appreciation led Tocco directly to Touro College School of Health Sciences Physician Assistant program in Bay Shore, where he was the first student accepted into the program’s highly competitive Academic Excellence (AE) track.

While, typically, students must complete 90 undergraduate credits before even applying to the PA program in

their junior year, the AE honors track grants high achieving freshmen like Christopher conditional acceptance into the PA program if they meet and maintain a superior academic record in science classes and other subjects during their three years as an undergraduate. “It is an extremely competitive program,” said Tocco.

“You need to be the best of the best to get in. They don’t want any slackers.”

In 2014, the basic PA program received 3,000 applications for about 150 openings.

Tocco, a resident of Lindenhurst, had been working towards this

goal while attending high school, where he matriculated credits in AP biology and psychology, and took summer courses in Italian and business law through Adelphi University and Farmingdale State College, respectively.

This summer he plans to enroll in EMT training through the fire department. During his first semester at Touro, he averaged a 3.9. And while he admits his transition to the program had been easier for him than for other students, he still works hard. “I’m always up for challenging myself.”

Dominick Fortugno,

Chair and Director of Undergraduate Studies at SHS, said Tocco’s “raw academic performance,” had brought him to the attention of Touro’s SHS faculty, along with his general academic strength and aptitude for STEM subjects (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math). “He is also personable, engaging, and - most of all - had a firm handle on what he wanted to study and what he wanted to do with his life,” added Fortugno.

“Christopher impressed us immediately with his personality and intelligence, and he’s continued to demonstrate those same qualities in

the AE track.”

Some PA students who do well go on for their MD’s. When asked if that was Tocco’s plan, he said it was a possibility. But for now, he said, “I want to get my feet wet first.”

Civil War Wax Figures Harding Avenue Elementary School fifthgrade students dressed up as their favorite Civil War character as the culminating activity for the fifth-grade Civil War unit. In full regalia, they struck a pose for museum visitors, which included students and parents.

Students researched several Civil War battles and important historical figures. They each compiled

poetry, wrote letters, and told about their character’s war experiences. They also decorated full-size backgrounds to stand in front of during the museum visit. The final copies of the biographical pamphlet are written on coffee-stained paper to look authentic.

While the civil war was about two sides of the same country working against each other, this project

was about two classes from one school coming together. Students in Gina Krumholz class worked directly with the students in Caitlin Curran’s life skills class, offering additional support with their projects. What transpired was much bigger than the historical presentations.

The students were able to develop friendships that go beyond demonstrations at a wax museum.
