During the February 13th Copiague Board of Education meeting, students were recognized for their winning entries in the annual Knights of Columbus Substance Abuse Art Poster Contest and essay contest on religious freedom and diversity.

In front of family and friends, former Grand Knight Bob Waidler and members of the Our Lady of the Assumption Council of the Knights of Columbus awarded each student a certificate of participation and a gift certificate provided by the Knights. Superintendent of Schools Dr. Kathleen Bannon, Board of Education members, Coordinator of Fine Arts Jennifer Pierre-Louis and Copiague Middle School social studies teachers Kristin Alfarano and Andrea Hernandez were on hand to congratulate the winners.

The art poster winners were: Deauville Gardens East’s Tiana Newman (alcohol 8-11 group); Copiague Middle School’s Kenneth Tejada (alcohol 12-14 group); Copiague Middle School’s Denise Garcia (drugs 8-11 group); Copiague Middle School’s Cathrine Sakin (drugs 1214 group); and Great Neck Road’s runner-up Kelvin Reyes-Verde.

The essay contest winners were Copiague Middle School seventhgraders Ileana Fernandez (first place), Richard Queensborough (second place) and Alex Iglesias (third place).

I’m fairly good with directions. For someone who, as a passenger, is rather oblivious to her surroundings, once in the driver’s seat, I can generally navigate with little trouble.

Of course, in this day and age, there is always the added benefit of GPS to fall back on. And by benefit, I mean often maddening source of frustration and bewilderment.

Case in point: my friend and I have, over the last several years, attended several of the laser light shows at the Vanderbilt Planetarium.

Of course, there are several possible routes to take, but all roads ultimately lead to one winding, somewhat meandering path through the

hilly terrain of Centerport. As these shows are generally in the evening, I always plug the address into the phone’s map so as to be sure I don’t miss a turn en route.

Of the approximately half a dozen times we have headed this way, I can honestly say we have never managed to travel the same way twice. Never.

Not once.

Just last week, as if to prove the point, my phone’s darling virtual assistant proceeded to take us on a grand tour of the residential area surrounding the planetarium, complete with dozens of unnecessary turns (followed by U-turn’s and “rerouting”), forks in the road (continue heading straight, she said) and even a pass over a small body of water (do you remember there

being a bridge here before?).

And on the return trip, there was more of the same – except, not quite the same, as we detoured through an entirely different neighborhood.

How is this possible??

At a certain point, it became more a source of amusement, a fun guessing game as to which way she might send us next. Amazingly, our time of arrival only fluctuated by a minute or so, in spite of the fact that our route never came close to matching the virtually straight line that had appeared on the map.

It was a bizarre journey, to be sure – and will continue to be, should we venture that way again.

That, at least, seems to be a guarantee.

As part of the annual program, GSNC Troops will set up shop at their local railroad stations in an effort to both gain entrepreneurial experience and provide commuters with the opportunity to buy Girl Scout Cookies.
