We have gotten a lot of positive feedback and we are excited to extend this progam to our Minors and Majors Division. Since the 2015 baseball season our Minors and Majors have been participating in both 2016 in-house games and interleague games. The interleague games will be with Copiague and Amityville. Most games will still be played at Kienle Field and some games scheduled at a local field.

We all deal with increases in expenses all the time. We recently learned that the minimum wage was increased to $10.00 per hour in our area, and it will continue to increase to up to $15.00 per hour by 2021. These types of increases are a result of decisions from our elected officials. On the surface, many people think this is good and fair; but when you delve deeper, you may find that it might not be so good after all. All businesses, including small businesses, must now figure out a way to deal with these increased costs. They now must decide how much of these costs their business can absorb and how much must now be passed on to the consumer. Many businesses are

Who is Paying for the Increases?

I recently found out that my yoga studio, the one I have been frequenting for the last several years, will be closing come the end of February. Sure, there are other studios, other forms of meditation that can be explored; but this was my studio, the one I had come to regard as a sanctuary of sorts, a respite from the oftstressful daily grind. When I began taking classes there, some three or four years ago, my goal was to attend one, two – even three – sessions per week, at all different levels, in an effort to explore this newfound hobby. I had originally decided to look into the practice after

“retiring” from dancing for the previous 20 years, and determined that yoga would be the perfect combination of strength and conditioning, balance and relaxation, that I needed. Of course, my grand plans eventually dwindled down to about once a week, as I found a regular class that I loved. Every Wednesday (or as many as I could manage to make it to), I would look forward to those 75 minutes of guided technique and mental cleansing. Certainly, anyone can undertake the basic yoga stretches and breathing techniques on his/her own; but there is definitely something about a structured class which brings a whole new level to

the practice. And so, come March, I will need to find a new venue to attend, a new haven to explore this ancient ritual, which has so very many benefits in the modern world. How glad I am that I ventured into that particular studio all those years ago, and how very appreciative I am of the community of fellow “yogis” that I have come to know and respect. Here’s hoping that I find a new home for my hobby, one as welcoming and fulfilling and full of inspiration. ‘Til then, I shall savor these remaining weeks in my old familiar studio, surrounded by familiar faces; and I shall take a deep breath and appreciate all the goodness yoga has brought to my life.

Paving the Path Being college and career ready was top of mind for students in the Copiague School District as the district celebrated College and Career Day on January 13th. From the elementary schools all the way up to the high school, faculty and administrators proudly dressed in their alma mater. Students at Great Neck Road Elementary School opted to dress as their future career choice with a slew of doctors, veterinarians, police officers and lawyers throughout the

building. One elementary class set up its room as a bakery for the day. Dressed as aspiring chefs, the students baked and sold cupcakes and cookies to learn about business model. Students at Copiague Middle School learned about the many opportunities offered during the college years, such as traveling abroad and meeting new people. Teachers shared their college experience and spoke about the endless career choices that college can offer.

Military personnel, local businesspeople and Copiague alumni visited Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School to offer insight and information about the college experience. Many alumni spoke about budgeting, dorm life, financial aid and navigating through the first year both academically and socially. Throughout the district, students sported their blue and white “College and Career Day” bracelets to support the PAVING THE PATH - Copiague School District held a College and Career Day on event. January 13th to teach students throughout the district about how to become college

Engaging Experiments Fourth-graders in Nicole Antz’s class at Deauville Gardens West Elementary School in the Copiague School District spent the ﬁrst week of January conducting science experiments related to how energy works.

Using the district’s new hands-on science kits, the students worked on a lesson exploring potential vs. kinetic energy using inclined planes (ramps) and marbles. They learned that the marbles at rest contain potential energy. When

Second-grade students in Heather Paglino’s class at William Rall Elementary School in the Lindenhurst Union Free School District recently explored the message of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in a unique way. As a class, the students examined two eggs, one brown and one white. The students

compared and contrasted the eggs and documented the physical characteristic on a graphic organizer. The teacher then broke each egg open and students once again documented their observations. This lesson came on the heels of the students studying Dr. King and his efforts during the

civil rights movement. When asked what she learned from this lesson, one student, Divine, said, “Not everyone is the same on the outside, but we are all the same on the inside.” Another student Mohammed noted that “Martin Luther King was trying to teach the same message as our teacher!”

When we lose someone we love, their absence is forever with us. Immediately following our loss we are keenly aware of the absence of our loved one every moment of every day. We mourn. We cry. We learn to cope with the loss; of their physical presence, their encouraging words, their love and support. It may be five years or fifty years after our loved one has left us, but we are still conscious of their absence from our lives and we acknowledge their absence in so many different ways; a silent prayer, a private thought or a tear we blame on allergies or the wind. But as we sit and watch a graduation or attend a wedding or witness a baptism or just observe something that we used to share together; like watching a mother and child eating an ice cream cone or sitting on the beach, we think for that one special moment, “I wish mom (or dad, our sister, brother, spouse or our child, etc.) were here”, acknowledging their ever-present absence from our lives. Kindergarten Registration

During the January 18th Lindenhurst Union Free School District Board of Education Community Forum, the board permanently recognized the ﬁrst of many members of the Lindenhurst alumni community who served in the military. The Wall of Heroes was the brainstorm of former Lindenhurst High School student, Lisa Marie Masching. At the time, she observed that among the permanent commemorative honors that donned the walls of the high school, there was an absence of plaques commemorating the district’s students who made the decision to serve their country. Her mother, Deborah Masching, and board of education trustee Robert Vitiello, a U.S. Army veteran, led the initiative

to establish a plaque. Lisa Marie was deployed to Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, where she served as military police with the Army National Guard. To be considered for inclusion on the plaque, alumni were asked to complete the application located on the district website at www.lindenhurstschools. org and provide either proof of graduation from Lindenhurst or proof of service in the form of a DD214. The plaque was unveiled in the company of some of the heroes listed and proud family members. Also in attendance were local Boy Scout and Girl Scout troops, local politicians, including Suffolk County Legislator Kevin McCaffrey as well as district administrators, teachers and staff and members of the Lindenhurst

community who wanted to show their support and gratitude. The names on the unveiled plaque represent the ﬁrst group of eligible registrants, however, this is an ongoing campaign. Those interested in having their names included should follow the same procedure outlined above. Please note that when submitting any information that may include personal details such as social security information, it is the responsibility of the veteran to conceal that information. “The names of these brave men and women will be revered in our school forever,” said Superintendent of Schools Daniel E. Giordano. “They deserve this recognition and so much more.”
