Amityville Memorial High School seniors Alana Henry and Amari Alcindor were recently honored at the 25th Annual Butch Dellecave Awards held recently at Villa Lombardi’s in Holbrook.
Named in memory of the late Gaetano “Butch” Dellecave — the legendary educator, coach, and official — the award is a collaboration among the Economic Opportunity Council of Suffolk, Inc., the Butch Dellecave Foundation, and Newsday. The program is built on a 25-year partnership with Suffolk County school districts.
Each high school in the county is invited to nominate one male and one female member of its senior class. Finalists must demonstrate a rare combination of athletic prowess, academic achievement,
and meaningful civic involvement. “This award is about more than trophies,” said Adrian Fassett, President and CEO of the Economic Opportunity Council of Suffolk. “It’s about investing in the next generation of community leaders — young people who show us that success means being strong on the field, sharp in the classroom, and generous in community spirit. We’re proud to be part of a program that lifts up all of these remarkable nominees.”
About the Economic Opportunity Council of Suffolk, Inc.
The Economic Opportunity Council of Suffolk, Inc. – a not-forprofit 501(c)(3) communitybased organization – has been serving Suffolk County since 1967. It is the county’s federally designated Community Action Agency, designed
to assist low-income families and individuals. The agency’s mission is to promote a goal of self-
sufficiency by broadening the minds of children, revitalizing communities, and assisting families and
children in need through coordination of public and private resources.
On May 30, students from Park Avenue Memorial Elementary School in Amityville took part in the Girls on the Run 5K race.
For the past three years, Park Avenue has participated in the Girls on the Run program held during the district’s Leaders of Tomorrow program. A nonprofit organization, Girls on the Run programs were designed to inspire girls of all abilities to recognize and embrace their inner strength and make meaningful connections with others. Amityville’s teachers were trained for the program, which used physical activity and dynamic discussions to build social, emotional and physical skills while encouraging healthy habits for life.
Park Avenue participated with 35 other schools from Long Island in this year’s 5K race. The event was fun for the girls it served as an evidence-based program that inspired participants to recognize their inner strength, increase their level of physical activity, imagine their possibilities, and confidently stand up for themselves.
