DISTRICT’S 2025 VETERAN HALL OF FAME INDUCTEE

New York State Sen. Monica R. Martinez has selected Michael Kilano, a U.S. Marine Corps veteran and longtime advocate for fellow service members, as a 2025 inductee to the New York State Senate Veterans Hall of Fame representing the Fourth Senatorial District. Sen. Martinez Names Michael Kilano As District’s 2025 Veteran Hall Of Fame Inductee

Marine Corps Veteran Recognized For Service Both In And Out Of Uniform

New York State Sen. Monica R. Martinez has selected Michael Kilano, a U.S. Marine Corps veteran and longtime advocate for fellow service members, as a 2025 inductee to the New York State Senate Veterans Hall of Fame representing the Fourth Senatorial District.

While receiving treatment at the Northport VA Medical Center, Kilano was introduced to Paws of War, a Long Island based nonprofit that pairs veterans with trained service dogs. He credits his service dog, Nova, with helping him manage PTSD and strengthen his connection with his family.

Inspired by the difference Nova made in his life, Kilano now works full time at Paws of War as Director of Veteran Advocacy and Crisis Coordinator. In this role, he assists with community outreach, coordinates support for veterans in need, and helps transport service dogs to those awaiting companionship and care.

“Michael Kilano’s

Kilano served in the Marine Corps from 1999 to 2003 and was deployed to the Middle East following the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, where he participated in Operation Enduring Freedom. His battalion was among the first units sent into Iraq, where he endured intense combat and began to experience the long-term psychological effects of war. Diagnosed with combat-related posttraumatic stress disorder, Kilano continues to face daily challenges as a result of his service. Despite these obstacles, he has dedicated his life to helping others and providing stability for his five children.

resilience in the face of combat-related trauma reflects the spirit of determination that defines our nation’s armed forces,” said Sen. Martinez.

“Although he still carries the invisible wounds of war, Michael continues to serve his family, his country and his fellow veterans with honor and compassion. This strength has created a path for other veterans with PTSD to find support and healing through the unconditional love of a service animal, and I’m proud to recognize him as this year’s Veterans Hall of Fame inductee.”

The New York State Senate Veterans Hall of Fame was created to honor outstanding veterans from across the state who have not only served with distinction in the U.S. armed forces, but also demonstrated

extraordinary dedication to their communities. Each year, state senators select one honoree from their

district whose service and continued contributions represent the values of duty, sacrifice and public service. New inductees were recognized during a ceremony held in Albany on May 27, 2025.

SAME DAY DENTURE SERVICE

A Message from Lindenhurst Community Cares Coalition

Prom and graduation are exciting milestones but they’re also high-risk times for underage drinking and impaired driving As a parent or caregiver, you play a crucial role in keeping teens safe during this season Our mission is to raise awareness, offer resources, and promote healthy choices to prevent underage drinking and addiction in our community

Know the Law: New York State’s Social Host Law

It is illegal for any adult (18+) to knowingly allow minors (under 21) to consume alcohol on property they own, rent, or control including homes, yards, hotels, or rental spaces Violations can result in:

First offense: Fine up to $500

Second offense or more: Misdemeanor charge, fines up to $1,000 and/or up to one year in jail

You are required to take reasonable corrective action if you become aware of underage drinking on your property, such as asking minors to leave or contacting law enforcement

Smart Party Planning for Parents

Do not serve alcohol to minors it’s illegal and dangerous

Be present and aware of what’s happening in your home

Lock up alcohol, cannabis, and medications

Communicate with other parents don’t assume everyone has the same rules

Offer to host or support alcohol-free celebrations

Tips for Talking to Your Teen Before Prom

Start the conversation early and be clear about your expectations.

Ask about their plans: who they’re with, where they’ll be, and how they’re getting home Discuss real-life scenarios, like what to do if they’re offered alcohol or feel unsafe Reassure them they can call you anytime no questions asked for a safe ride home

Report Unsafe Situations

To report underage drinking parties or prevent a tragedy, call your local precinct’s non-emergency number Officers can notify homeowners and review the consequences of violating the Social Host Law

1st Precinct: 631-854-8147 | 2nd Precinct: 854-8254 | 3rd: 854-8326 | 4th: 854-8434 | 5th: 854-8527 | 6th: 854-8632 | 7th: 852-8726

Let’s Make Memories, Not Mistakes Together, we can help teens celebrate safely and make choices that lead to a brighter future For more information, visit www babyloncares org, follow us on Facebook: Lindenhurst Community Cares Coalition or contact us at lindycareslcc@gmail com
