IndependenceDay is July 4. It is customary for people to enjoy this day of national pride with barbecues, parties, parades, and other types of celebrations. Naturally, food is at the centerpiece of these events. Although appetizers and main courses (typically foods cooked on the grill) get a lot of fanfare, when the sun begins to set, both the fireworks and desserts are allowed to shine. “Raspberry-Almond Linzer Cookies” with their striking red centers can complement the color scheme of July 4 parties. Alternately, fill cookies with blueberry jam to achieve that red, white, and blue appeal. Enjoy this recipe, courtesy of “Real Simple Easy, Delicious Home Cooking” (Time Home Entertainment) from the Real Simple Kitchens.
Makes 36
2⁄3 cup almonds
1⁄2 cup packed light brown sugar
2 1⁄2 cups all-purpose flour, spooned and leveled, plus more for the work surface
1⁄2 teaspoon baking powder
1⁄2 teaspoon kosher salt
DIRECTIONS:
Heat oven to 350 F. Spread the almonds on a baking sheet and toast, tossing occasionally, until fragrant, 6 to 8 minutes; let cool. In a food processor, finely grind the almonds with 1⁄4 cup of the brown sugar. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, salt, and cinnamon; set aside.
Using an electric mixer, beat the butter and the remaining 1⁄4 cup of brown sugar on medium-high speed until fluffy, 2 to 3 minutes. Beat in the egg and vanilla. Reduce speed to low and gradually add the almond mixture, then the flour mixture, mixing until just combined (do not overmix). Shape the dough into two disks, tightly wrap, and refrigerate until firm, at least 3 hours.
1⁄4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1 cup unsalted butter, at room temperature
1 large egg
1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
1 tablespoon confectioners’ sugar
1 12-ounce jar raspberry jam
Heat oven to 350 F. Line 2 baking sheets with parchment. On a lightly floured surface, roll each disk of dough to a 1⁄8-inch thickness. Using a 2- to 21⁄2-inch round cookie cutter, cut out rounds and place 1 inch apart on the prepared baking sheet. Using a 3⁄4- to 1-inch round cookie cutter, cut the centers out of half the cookies. Reroll and cut the scraps as necessary.
Bake the cookies, rotating the baking sheets halfway through, until the edges are golden, 10 to 12 minutes. Cool slightly on the baking sheets, then transfer to wire racks to cool completely.
Sprinkle the confectioners’ sugar on the cookies with the holes. Spread 1 teaspoon of the jam on each of the remaining cookies; top with the sugared cookies. Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 5 days.

Oyster Bay Town
Supervisor Joseph Saladino recently attended the North Massapequa Fire District’s Installation Dinner to honor Outgoing Chief
Thomas M. Licata, who has served as a firefighter for nearly 30 years. Also recognized were ExCaptain Dennis Urso and Ex-Captain William Pollara
both of whom reached the remarkable milestone of 50 years of service.
Supervisor Saladino stated, “The Town of Oyster Bay is proud to
honor brave firefighters and first responders like Outgoing Chief Licata, Ex-Captain Urso, and ExCaptain Pollara who have dedicated their lives to
protecting our community. We are forever grateful for your service and courage in answering the call of duty and being part of the select few who choose to run towards an emergency, instead of away. God bless all first responders and the brave men and women in uniform who protect and serve.”
Educational careers aspirational and accomplished were celebrated at the Massapequa Board of Education meeting on May 22. The district honored its newly tenured teachers and administrators, as well as retiring staff.
A reception was held in the high school library prior to the meeting for administrators, teachers, teaching assistants, clerical staff, custodians and monitors who will retire at the end of the school year. Collectively, the 36 individuals totaled 893 years of service to the district.
“It’s a moment to pause and express our deepest gratitude for each of them, 36 individuals whose careers, spanning many
decades, were dedicated to the students, families and staff of Massapequa schools,” Superintendent Dr. William Brennan said.
“Our retirees come from every corner of our school community.”
This year’s retirees are William Anderson, Joseph Archipolo, Mark Ballerini, Anne Marie Bellizzi, Ben Benbasset, Patricia Brackman, Helen Cartolano, Judith Comerchero, Susan Corrado, Donna Crowley, Laura D’Ulisse, Domingo Estevez, Robert Farrell, Danielle Fraccalvieri, Lisa Gennardo, Jeannette Gillam, Ann Marie Gravano, Carol Guglielmi, Karen Hermann, Maryanne Hillman, Kimberly Kelly, Robert Kretz, Evelyne
LeGoupil, Mary Lynn McCauley, Maureen McGuire, Linda Moschella, Henryka Moszkowicz, Jeanne Nagel, Dr. Donna Neary, Paula Niesen Corke, Ann Marie Ondris, Lisa Perucca, Susan Risola, Rosemarie Savidge, Robert Schilling, Penny Schneider, Maria Stanton and Bruce Whaley.
At the meeting, the board officially approved tenure for 26 educators. Dr. Brennan noted that many of them competed against hundreds of applicants just to be hired, then went through a rigorous evaluation process.
“Congratulations on this important milestone,” Board of Education
President Kerry Wachter said to the newly tenured
administrators and teachers. “It represents your dedication to our students, our schools and our community.”
This year’s tenure recipients are Patrick Barry, Nicole Boyle, Michelle Carroll, Shannon Caruso, Janice Cosgrove, Alyssa Costello, Amanda DelGiacco, Donna Diliberto, Alana Durkin, Laura Fawcett, John Fernandez Jr., Katie Fernandez, John Ferraro, Jillian Hand, Stephanie Kelly, Ishita Malhotra, Julianne Masterson, Dimitria McGinn, Patricia Parini, Megan Pavlick, Maureen Romano, MaryLynn Schauer, Kristen Urban, Meagan Vazquez, Kelly Verity and Deanna Woods.
Curriculum Associate for World Languages and ENL William Anderson, District Clerk Anne Marie Bellizzi and Assistant Superintendent for Human Resources and General Administration Robert Schilling are retiring after long careers in the district.

Take pride in how far you’ve come, have faith in how far you can go and never forget to enjoy the journey!
Since their rst advanced class together in ninth grade, Massapequa High School seniors Samantha Portz and William Stebner have found themselves at nearby desks many times. Now, they are together side-by-side in the Class of 2025 rankings.
Samantha is the valedictorian with a weighted grade point average of 101.34, followed a fraction of a point behind by William, the salutatorian, with a 101.083 GPA. On a recent Friday, Samantha was called to Principal Barbara Lowell’s o ce from her Advanced Placement Biology class and told the good news. A few minutes later, William was called down from AP Physics.
“I was extremely happy, all my hard work over the years being recognized,”
Samantha said, jokingly adding, “I always knew that Will was main competitor.”
“We’ve always been there to support each other,”
William said, noting that they were never actually in competition, but always
rooting for each other’s success and studying together ever since they took AP Human Geography at the Ames Campus.
Both describe their areas of strength as math and science, although they have challenged themselves across the curriculum. Samantha has taken 14 AP classes at Massapequa High School and William enrolled in 13.
With all the rigorous courses, Food and Nutrition is the class that stands out for Samantha as a favorite from high school. Learning how to cook and prepare healthy meals was a valuable life skill, she noted. Massapequa’s unique law program, which has a
dedicated classroom that resembles a courtroom, struck William’s interest. Samantha, who started as a kindergartner at Lockhart Elementary School, looks to major in math in college. She has already committed to Amherst College in Massachusetts to play so ball and join the ROTC. A er those four years, she plans to join the military as a second lieutenant. Her involvement in high school stretches well beyond the classroom. She’s been on the varsity so ball team for four years, varsity soccer for three years and varsity bowling for two years, is a member of Best Buddies and was selected to the National and Spanish honor societies.
“ ere’s tremendous opportunities here,” Samantha said. “Anything that interests you, there’s something available.”
e top-ranked graduates are Class of 2025 o cers, with Samantha serving as secretary and William as treasurer. ey are also both members of Science Olympiad and last year teamed up to win a regional medal in the chemistry lab competition.
William, a Birch Lane Elementary School graduate, is co-captain of Mock Trial. Last year, he was the starting lawyer in a simulated case during a New York State Bar Association competition. He is also a member of mathletes and
plays the violin. A er high school, he wants to study chemical engineering.
“It’s really important to make the most of it in the four years that you get in high school,” William said.
“ ere’s always a way to be active in school.”
Outside of school, Samantha supports players in the Massapequa Youth Little League as a so ball instructor, does kickboxing, and is a babysitter and math tutor. William is a Boy Scout who earned the Eagle rank by helping the Massapequa Historical Society clean and repaint the foundation of Old Grace Church. He also volunteered the past two summers at Camp Invention.
Both seniors will graduate with the AP Capstone Diploma and the Seal of Biliteracy, and they have been named AP Scholars with Distinction.
Samantha and William both credit their parents, teachers and guidance counselors for their success. For Samantha, her two-time math teacher and AP Research mentor Christopher Diehl was a tremendous inspiration, while William admires Daniel Bachman’s passion for teaching law.
Ms. Lowell, who met Samantha and William in sixth grade when she was executive assistant to the principal at Berner Middle School, admires their dedication to both their academics and student life.
“ ey are super involved,” she said. “ ey have great attitudes, great work ethics. ey really enjoy high school and made the most out of their experience.”

High school senior Isabella Taylor has been accepted into the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland, marking the first time in 13 years that a female student from Massapequa has earned this opportunity. She received a presidential nomination to attend the U.S. Naval Academy, as well as appointments to the United States Air Force Academy and the United States Merchant Marine Academy. She chose to attend the United States Naval Academy, which has been a dream of hers for a long time.
Isabella is an AP scholar and a member of the National Honor Society. A

a pilot and eventually go to Space. I always aspired to attend the U.S. Naval Academy, known for its rigorous academic programs and highly selective admission process. I always felt that it would be the best place for me to pursue my dreams .”
Several members of Isabella’s family have served in the Navy, so it proved a natural choice for her, and the rigorous application process- including essays, interviews, a congressional nomination as well as academic, medical, and physical assessments were a challenge that she successfully navigated and completed.
