The Lindenhurst Historical Society And The Village Of Lindenhurst Will Cohost The Unveiling Of A William G. Pomeroy Foundation
Historic Transportation Marker Commemorating The Welwood Station Depot
Saturday June 21, 2025 At 1 PM
The Lindenhurst Historical Society is proud to announce that it is the recipient of a second William G. Pomeroy Foundation Historic Transportation Marker grant. The grant funds were utilized to procure a Pomeroy Marker bearing an inscription that indicates the historic significance of area’s first depot and role the Railroad played in the 1870 founding of the City of Breslau.
The Historic Transportation Marker will be unveiled in a joint ceremony held by the Lindenhurst Historical Society and the Inc. Village of Lindenhurst on Saturday, June 21, 2025 at the former depot’s current location at 181 School Street beginning at 1PM. Included among the speakers helping to unveil the marker are Lindenhurst Village Mayor Mike Lavorata, Lindenhurst Village Trustee Maryann Weckerle, Lindenhurst Village Historian Anna Jaeger and Town of Babylon Historian Mary Cascone. Light refreshments will follow the ceremony and will be hosted by BACCA/Arts Center located at 149 North Wellwood Avenue.
Built in 1868 with donations of labor, material and money, the Welwood Station served as Breslau’s first depot on the South Side Railroad until 1870 when it was moved to 181 School Street to serve as a school, then fire house and finally a residence.
1901 Restored LIRR Depot and Freight House Museum Site Manager Ed “Skip” Meinhold will help host the ceremony. “We are excited to have the Village join us as we unveil our second William G. Pomeroy Foundation Historic Transportation Marker,” said Mr. Meinhold. “Welwood Station Depot was our first depot, built by local farmers who recognized the significance the South Side Railroad’s 1867 construction of a single track from Jamaica to Babylon would have on future development. Appreciation of the Railroad’s significance is a history we celebrate
at our 1901 Depot and Freight House Museum.” The 1901 Restored LIRR Depot and Freight House Museum are opened to the public from June thru October on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 2:00PM to 4:00PM. Admission is free. The Lindenhurst Historical Society has enjoyed a valuable and mutually advantageous partnership with the Inc. Village of Lindenhurst. United in a shared vision to preserve, the partnership has produced three instances whereby buildings relevant to Breslau’s/ Lindenhurst’s founding and subsequent development as the 4th largest village in New York State were protected from demolition and preserved as museums. The Lindenhurst Historical Society is proud to manage all three buildings as museums; The Lindenhurst Historical House Museum (reopening Summer 2025) at 272 South Wellwood Avenue and at Irmisch Park, the 1901 Restored Long Island Railroad Depot and Freight House Museum (now opened for the season) and the Old Village Hall Museum(reopening Summer 2025).
“All our museum buildings are all historically valuable in their own right,” said Village Historian Anna Jaeger, “but also provide historically intrinsic exhibit space along with valuable storage for the Society’s collection of local artifacts, objects and historical items, allowing the Lindenhurst Historical Society to preserve our history but provide countless opportunities to tell the Lindenhurst story..”

What Is The Summer Solstice And What’s Notable About This Day?

The National Weather Service says the summer solstice occurs when the Earth’s tilt toward the sun is at a maximum. When this occurs, the sun appears at its highest elevation, or when the sun is directly over the Tropic of Cancer at 23.5 degrees latitude north. The sun’s noontime position changes very little for several days before and after the solstice. With this positioning of the sun, people enjoy the longest day of the year in terms of daylight hours.
In 2025, the summer solstice occurs on June 20 at 1:41 p.m. EDT. Those in the southern hemisphere
will have to wait until December 21 at 4:21 a.m. EST for their summer solstice. In celebration of the solstice, explore these facts about this remarkable day.
• The summer solstice occurs when one of the Earth’s poles is tilted toward the sun at its most extreme angle.
• Per each hemisphere, solstices occur twice a year: the winter and the summer solstice.
• Various cultures around the world celebrate the summer solstice with traditions, holidays and festivals.
• The summer solstice marks the official start of astronomical summer.
• The world “solstice” is derived from Latin and means “sun standing still.”
• Depending on one’s latitude, the length of daylight a person can enjoy on the solstice varies. At the equator, the time from sunrise to sunset is roughly 12 hours. At temperate or mid-northern latitudes, the length of daylight lasts about 15 hours, says Space.com.
• Solstices do not land on the same calendar day every year because the astronomical year is 365.25 days long. So the solstices shift a day or two each year, but generally fall within the same three days. In the northern hemisphere, those days are June 20, 21 or 22 for the summer solstice.
• No one is quite sure who discovered that the solstices occur. According to Owen Gingerich, Professor Emeritus of Astronomy and History of Science at Harvard
University, “[There is] no writing to record this great discovery.”
• The summer solstice often is when the golf season heats up. Many clubs take advantage of the longer days during the week the solstice takes place to host sunrise to sunset
golf tournaments.
• Although the summer solstice is the longest day of the year in terms of daylight hours, typically it is not the hottest. It will take some time for the Earth to heat up with a greater tilt toward the sun. Hotter days arrive
at the end of July and last into August.
The summer solstice is a time for celebration. The solstice brings more daylight and the official start of summer and offers plenty of reasons to get outside and enjoy the warm weather.

The National External Diploma Program offers adults 21 and over, the opportunity to receive credit for their life experiences, and earn a high school equivalency diploma without the challenge of taking lengthy timed examinations. NEDP, is a competency based program for students who are unable to attend classes or who prefer to work at home. Successful
candidates for NEDP include former ESL students, students who have been out of school for prolonged periods of time, or students who fare better without the structure of tests. Presiding Officer McCaffrey Presented With Water Quality Restoration Act Signed By Governor
During the Tuesday, April 8, 2025, General Meeting of the Suffolk County Legislature, Legislator James Mazzarella presented Presiding Officer McCaffrey with a pen certificate signed by the Governor codifying the approval of the referendum creating the Suffolk County Water Quality Restoration Act!
As the April 8, 2025, General Meeting of the Suffolk County Legislature was called to order, Legislator James Mazzarella took to the podium for a special presentation. He brought with him a framed pen certificate from the Executive Chamber of the State of New York codifying the approval of the referendum creating the Water Quality Restoration Act and its funding here in Suffolk County. It included the pen in which Governor Kathy Hochul signed the approval into law.
On June 25, 2024, the Suffolk County Legislature, under the leadership of Presiding Officer McCaffrey, voted to extend and revise the Suffolk County Drinking Water Protection Program and establish a Water Quality Restoration Fund. Collectively named the “Suffolk County Water Quality Restoration Act,” these actions create a long-term plan to expand and upgrade Suffolk County’s aging wastewater infrastructure and gives the County the authority to establish a new, stable, and long-term funding source for wastewater improvement projects.
Said Legislator Mazzarella: “Water quality defines us as residents of Suffolk County. It is our lifeline and inextricably links us -- links our economy and well-being. Nobody understands that more than Presiding Officer Kevin McCaffrey, who has worked tirelessly
for over a decade to take the time to understand the science and provide constructive input into every last detail of the water quality plan. He has presided over the impetus of Suffolk County’s wastewater transformation creating a district that will provide a steady and recurring local source of revenue that will spur much-needed investment in our downtowns and economy while protecting our environment.
For years, there’s been grave concern over the decline of our waters, from brown tide to red tides and many colors in between, with lots of scientists measuring the decline. It was Kevin’s unwavering leadership that turned our attention to action in creating the SubWatershed Wastewater Plan and Countywide Wastewater Management Plan to bring us here today.
I want to thank Presiding Officer Kevin McCaffrey for his service and his leadership. Thank you, Kevin.”
Said Presiding Officer McCaffrey, upon accepting the Citation: “This was a team effort. A lot of work went into this and a lot of people before us came up with this great idea.
I am proud to have been able to get this Act into its final version and across the finish line for the betterment of our County.
In the original version, only had 25 percent of the money was earmarked for sewers and 75 percent for innovative wastewater systems, and I felt we needed to find a better balance. Through perseverance, a little arm twisting and a little sacrifice, we came together and got this where it needs to be.
This is something that is going to live on for a very long time into our future. We’re going to look back, all of us, on supporting
this and saying we made a difference, and we were the ones that made sure that water quality is going to be front and center for a very long time.
And when you look out in those beautiful streams and bays, we want to improve them, and we want to make sure that we leave this water quality and these beautiful bays and streams and rivers that we have in a better place than when we found them and I think this goes a long way to doing it. So, thank you, everybody, for your support and sticking through this. We got it done. Thank you very much!”

Alzheimer’s Foundation Of America Hosting Free Memory Screenings For Long Islanders Every Wednesday In June
The Alzheimer’s Foundation of America (AFA) will be providing free memory screenings for Long Islanders every Wednesday, during the month of June, from 1:30 pm to 4:30 pm at its new Barbara Rabinowitz Education and Resource Center, located at 149 Schleigel Blvd, in Amityville. Screenings are open to everyone, with no minimum age or insurance prerequisites, and can be scheduled by calling 631-223-4000. Memory screenings are quick (approximately 1015 minutes), noninvasive, and consist of a series of questions to gauge memory, language, thinking skills and other cognitive functions. They are similar to other
routine health screenings, such as those for blood pressure, cholesterol, and skin checks. Screenings are administered one on one by a qualified professional, and results are confidential and provided immediately at the end of the screening. Results are not a diagnosis, but a memory screening can suggest if someone should see a physician for a full evaluation.
Early detection of memory impairments is vital. Many different conditions can cause memory issues, including treatable or curable conditions such as vitamin deficiencies, thyroid disorders, urinary tract infections, sleep apnea, stress, anxiety, and depression.
Even in the case of a dementia-related illness such as Alzheimer’s, early detection can provide greater opportunity to begin treatments when they are most effective, as well as taking part in a clinical trial. In addition, it affords the person the chance to take advantage of community services, such as support groups and therapeutic programming, which can help maximize quality of life, as well as have a greater say in making legal, financial, and health care decisions. National Little League is proud to be a host of MLB’s Pitch, Hit & Run event in 2025, providing a unique experience for youth athletes. This free and fun event will take place on Saturday, June 21, 2025, and is open to all kids ages 7-14, whether they currently play Little League or not. They can come from any town, and all skill levels are welcome! The event
is taking place at Kienle Memorial Field in Fireman’s Park, located on Heiling Boulevard in Lindenhurst.
Major League Baseball Pitch, Hit & Run (PHR) local events allow youth organizations, such as LNLL, an opportunity to provide a free and high-quality experience for boys and girls to showcase their baseball and softball skills, with
the opportunity of earning a chance to attend and compete for a Championship during the 2025 MLB World Series!
The Pitch, Hit & Run program is a free event series for boys and girls and consists of a series of movements that are important in baseball and softball. They will be tested, and their measurements will be recorded for points. Based
on their scores, they will advance from a Local Event to a Team Championship and then to the Finals hosted at the World Series.

Jake Albert And Katharine Sni en Are At e Top Of eir Class
Lindenhurst, NEW YORK (June 2025)— e Lindenhurst School District is proud to announce Jake Albert as Valedictorian and Katharine Sni en as Salutatorian of Lindenhurst High School’s Class of 2025. ese outstanding students have demonstrated exceptional academic achievement, leadership, and dedication throughout their high school careers.
Jake Albert, with a weighted GPA of 105.37, is a National Merit Scholar and AP Scholar with Distinction. He served in the Key Club, National Honor Society, and Tri-M Honor Society while also achieving remarkable success in cross country and track. Jake was named Newsday’s All-Long Island Cross Country Athlete and won the Su olk County Track Championship in the 3,200m. is fall, Jake will attend Johns Hopkins University, where he will study Biomedical Engineering and compete in NCAA Track and Field.
Katharine Sni en has achieved a weighted GPA of 104.68. An AP Scholar with Distinction, she served as vice president of the National Honor Society, treasurer of Rotary INTERACT, and captain of Varsity Field Hockey and Lacrosse. Katharine also earned the NHS Community Service Award and led her team to 1st Place in Su olk County’s Recycling Bin Contest. A McNair Scholar, Katharine will attend the University of South Carolina Honors College on a full academic scholarship, majoring in International Business and Finance.

“Loving Lindenhurst” Gallery Night Held In April
The Lindenhurst Memorial Library was filled with creativity, community spirit, and civic pride during this year’s Junior Mayor Gallery Night, a special event held in April to honor participants in the annual “Loving Lindenhurst” contest.
The evening showcased a vibrant collection of art, essays, and multimedia projects created by local students, each expressing what they love most about their hometown. These inspiring submissions are the
heart of the contest, which selects the community’s next Junior Mayors—young leaders who represent Lindenhurst’s future with passion and purpose.
A heartfelt thank you goes to the Lindenhurst Memorial Library staff, whose support and hospitality made this memorable night possible. We are deeply grateful to Library Director Lisa Kropp and Deputy Director Caitlin Sempowich for graciously hosting the event and for their ongoing commitment
to uplifting our youth through, not only the Junior Mayor program, but through the library’s extensive programming, as well.
The Junior Mayor program continues to be a cornerstone initiative celebrating civic engagement and youth leadership in Lindenhurst. We look forward to seeing these bright young leaders continue to make a difference in our community.

At Belfast Gastropub’s Taste of Lindenhurst, the OLPH Knights of Columbus led the fundraiser for the Lindenhurst Youth Center, and thanks to the generous community, they were able to raise over $1,000 for the important mission.

Prom and graduation are exciting milestones—but they’re also high-risk times for underage drinking and impaired driving. As a parent or caregiver, you play a crucial role in keeping teens safe during this season. Our mission is to raise awareness, offer resources, and promote healthy choices to prevent underage drinking and addiction in our community.
Know the Law: New York State’s Social Host Law
It is illegal for any adult (18+) to knowingly allow minors (under 21) to consume alcohol on property they own, rent, or control including homes, yards, hotels, or rental spaces. Violations can result in:
First offense: Fine up to $500
Second offense or more: Misdemeanor charge, fines up to $1,000 and/or up to one year in jail
You are required to take reasonable corrective action if you become aware of underage drinking on your property, such as asking minors to leave or contacting law enforcement.
Tips for Talking to Your Teen Before Prom
Start the conversation early and be clear about your expectations.
Ask about their plans: who they’re with, where they’ll be, and how they’re getting home
Smart Party Planning for Parents
Do not serve alcohol to minors it’s illegal and dangerous.
Be present and aware of what’s happening in your home.
Lock up alcohol, cannabis, and medications.
Communicate with other parents don’t assume everyone has the same rules.
Offer to host or support alcohol-free celebrations.
