Deer Park Seniors Celebrate Their Future On Decision Day

Deer Park High School seniors gathered with excitement in the school’s lobby on May 1 for Decision Day, the culmination of College and Career Week. Dressed in their college and career outfits, the students took photos and celebrated making decisions about their futures. Dozens of colleges and universities as well as the military services were in attendance throughout the week. In

addition, workshops were offered on topics such as achieving success on the SAT and ACT, interview preparation, college tuition and personal finances, and careers in business, education, nursing, health care, engineering and forensic science.

“Decision Day was a celebration of our seniors’ hard work and dedication,”

Associate Principal Dr. Dina Pannone said. “It was

inspiring to see our school community come together to support our graduates as they take the next step toward their futures, whether in college, military, trades or their careers. This day marked the beginning of a new chapter, and we couldn’t be prouder of all they’ve accomplished.”

Free Memory Screenings

The Alzheimer’s Foundation of America (AFA) will be providing free memory screenings for Long Islanders every Wednesday, during the month of June, from 1:30 pm to 4:30 pm at its new Barbara Rabinowitz Education and Resource Center, located at 149 Schleigel Blvd, in Amityville. Screenings are open to everyone, with no minimum age or insurance prerequisites, and can be scheduled by calling 631-223-4000.

Memory screenings are quick (approximately 1015 minutes), noninvasive, and consist of a series of questions to gauge memory, language, thinking skills and other cognitive functions. They are similar to other routine health screenings, such as those for blood pressure, cholesterol, and skin checks. Screenings are administered one on one by a qualified professional, and results are confidential and provided immediately at the end of the screening. Results are not a diagnosis, but a memory screening can suggest if someone should see a physician for a full evaluation.

Early detection of memory impairments is vital. Many different conditions can cause memory issues, including treatable or curable conditions such as vitamin deficiencies, thyroid disorders, urinary tract infections, sleep apnea, stress, anxiety, and depression.

Even in the case of a dementia-related illness such as Alzheimer’s, early detection can provide greater opportunity to begin treatments when they are most effective, as well as taking part in a clinical trial. In addition, Continued On 5

Legislator Donnelly Honors Deer Park Primary School Students For Bicycle Safety Poster Contest Participation

Suffolk Legislator Tom Donnelly (D-Deer Park) recently honored several students from the Deer Park School District’s John Quincy Adams (JQA) and May Moore Primary Schools for their creative entries in the legislature’s annual Bicycle Safety Poster Contest. Established by resolution 1082-2021, the Suffolk County Legislature’s Bicycle Safety Poster Contest invites elementaryaged students to submit posters of their creation to their Legislator’s Office that showcase the importance of riding a bike safely.

Each year, one poster is selected from all of those submitted to be used as part of a countywide handout from the Suffolk County Police Department in its annual bicycle safety campaign. This year, first grader Joshua Cyrius of JQA Primary School was selected as the District 17 winner and named the countywide runner-up for his standout poster. students Evans Garcia and Philomina Nakhla were honored for their creative contributions to the contest. Legislator Donnelly was joined by Principal Alcalde and Associate Principal Essig to celebrate their efforts and present certificates.

“Bicycling is a fun and healthy activity, but safety has to come first,” said Legislator Donnelly. “This contest is a great way to get kids thinking about how to stay safe while riding, and I’m so impressed by the creativity and care all of these students put into their posters. I thank them for helping to spread such an important message.”

RECIPE OF THE WEEK: Raspberry-Almond Linzer Cookies

IndependenceDay is July 4. It is customary for people to enjoy this day of national pride with barbecues, parties, parades, and other types of celebrations. Naturally, food is at the centerpiece of these events. Although appetizers and main courses (typically foods cooked on the grill) get a lot of fanfare, when the sun begins to set, both the ﬁreworks and desserts are allowed to shine. “Raspberry-Almond Linzer Cookies” with their striking red centers can complement the color scheme of July 4 parties. Alternately, ﬁll cookies with blueberry jam to achieve that red, white, and blue appeal. Enjoy this recipe, courtesy of “Real Simple Easy, Delicious Home Cooking” (Time Home Entertainment) from the Real Simple Kitchens.

Makes 36

2⁄3 cup almonds

1⁄2 cup packed light brown sugar

2 1⁄2 cups all-purpose ﬂour, spooned and leveled, plus more for the work surface

1⁄2 teaspoon baking powder

1⁄2 teaspoon kosher salt

DIRECTIONS:

Heat oven to 350 F. Spread the almonds on a baking sheet and toast, tossing occasionally, until fragrant, 6 to 8 minutes; let cool. In a food processor, ﬁnely grind the almonds with 1⁄4 cup of the brown sugar. In a medium bowl, whisk together the ﬂour, baking powder, salt, and cinnamon; set aside.

Using an electric mixer, beat the butter and the remaining 1⁄4 cup of brown sugar on medium-high speed until fluffy, 2 to 3 minutes. Beat in the egg and vanilla. Reduce speed to low and gradually add the almond mixture, then the flour mixture, mixing until just combined (do not overmix). Shape the dough into two disks, tightly wrap, and refrigerate until firm, at least 3 hours.

1⁄4 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1 cup unsalted butter, at room temperature

1 large egg

1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract

1 tablespoon confectioners’ sugar

1 12-ounce jar raspberry jam

Heat oven to 350 F. Line 2 baking sheets with parchment. On a lightly ﬂoured surface, roll each disk of dough to a 1⁄8-inch thickness. Using a 2- to 21⁄2-inch round cookie cutter, cut out rounds and place 1 inch apart on the prepared baking sheet. Using a 3⁄4- to 1-inch round cookie cutter, cut the centers out of half the cookies. Reroll and cut the scraps as necessary.

Bake the cookies, rotating the baking sheets halfway through, until the edges are golden, 10 to 12 minutes. Cool slightly on the baking sheets, then transfer to wire racks to cool completely.

Sprinkle the confectioners’ sugar on the cookies with the holes. Spread 1 teaspoon of the jam on each of the remaining cookies; top with the sugared cookies. Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 5 days.

Donating Blood

The Foods You Eat Could Affect Whether Or Not You Can Donate

The foods a person eats before attempting to donate blood could affect whether or not he or she is allowed to donate. According to the American Red Cross, its staff members routinely check the level of hemoglobin in donors’ blood and platelets before they accept donations. Hemoglobin is a protein in the body that contains iron and gives blood its distinctive red color. Hemoglobin plays a vital role

in human health, carrying oxygen from the lungs to nourish all of the tissues in the body. Hemoglobin levels are checked using fingersticks, and if hemoglobin levels are low, then donors will be asked to wait to donate until their levels return to normal. So what does food have to do with hemoglobin? Iron is a part of hemoglobin and found in many of the foods a person eats. Iron helps people

maintain their strength and energy, and it’s also necessary to help the body make new blood cells to replace the ones that are lost through blood donations. The Red Cross encourages prospective donors to eat healthy foods that are rich in iron and high in vitamin C, as doing so can increase their chances of being accepted as blood donors and can aid in their recoveries after donating.
