Alzheimer’s Foundation Of America Hosting Free Memory Screenings For Long Islanders

Every Wednesday In June

The Alzheimer’s Foundation of America (AFA) will be providing free memory screenings for Long Islanders every Wednesday, during the month of June, from 1:30 pm to 4:30 pm at its new Barbara Rabinowitz Education and Resource Center, located at 149 Schleigel Blvd, in Amityville. Screenings are open to everyone, with no minimum age or insurance prerequisites, and can be scheduled by calling 631-223-4000. Memory screenings are quick (approximately 10-

15 minutes), noninvasive, and consist of a series of questions to gauge memory, language, thinking skills and other cognitive functions. They are similar to other routine health screenings, such as those for blood pressure, cholesterol, and skin checks. Screenings are administered one on one by a qualified professional, and results are confidential and provided immediately at the end of the screening. Results are not a diagnosis, but a memory screening can suggest if someone

should see a physician for a full evaluation.

Early detection of memory impairments is vital. Many different conditions can cause memory issues, including treatable or curable conditions such as vitamin deficiencies, thyroid disorders, urinary tract infections, sleep apnea, stress, anxiety, and depression.

Even in the case of a dementia-related illness such as Alzheimer’s, early detection can provide greater opportunity to begin treatments when they are most effective, as well as taking part in a clinical trial. In addition, it affords the person the chance to take advantage of community services, such as support groups and therapeutic programming, which can help maximize quality of life, as well as have a greater say in making legal, financial, and health care decisions.

RECIPE OF THE WEEK: Pecan-Stuffed Pork Chops

Families celebrate Dad in unique ways on Father’s Day. Gifts are customary, but so is a delicious meal Dad will love. Many dads will appreciate a meal that goes above and beyond the ordinary, preferably something that is hearty and delicious. These “Pecan-Stuffed Pork Chops” from “Jon Bonnell’s Texas Favorites” (Gibbs Smith) are a great dish to serve family style when everyone gathers around the table for Father’s Day.

Serves 7-8

1 large rack of pork chops, bones in 4 tablespoons butter

1⁄2 yellow onion, chopped

2 ribs celery, chopped

5 cloves garlic, minced

1 1⁄2 cups chicken stock

DIRECTIONS:

Clean the rack of pork well and cut in between the bones to get thick individual pork chops. Cut a large slit down the back side of each chop and insert the tip of a knife 2 to 3 inches inside the chop to create a pocket for the stufﬁng. Do not poke completely through the pork or the stufﬁng will not stay in. In a large saucepan, melt the butter and sauté the onion, celery and garlic until the onion has slightly softened. Add the chicken stock, salt and cayenne and bring to a light simmer. Pour the contents into a mixing bowl and

1⁄4 teaspoon cayenne pepper

2 cups panko bread crumbs

2 cups

2 cups roasted pecans, chopped

More kosher salt and pepper, to taste

add the panko bread crumbs and pecans. Mix together and let cool to room temperature. Stuff as much of the mixture into each pork chop as will ﬁt (overstufﬁng is okay, too). Sprinkle both sides of each chop with salt and pepper to taste, then roast in a preheated 400 F oven for 12 minutes. Turn the chops over once and roast an additional 15 minutes. Check for doneness with a meat thermometer. Cook to medium, or 135 to 140 F.

More than 50 participants in the May 18, 2025 The Beat Lives On 5K run to honor CJ Neumann were trained by the Suffolk County Police Department (SCPD) in the use of Narcan, the antidote to an overdose, and received a kit containing two doses of the antidote. Research indicates that fentanyl is now the number one cause of death in the United States for people between the ages of 18-45 years.

The training was conducted by SCPD Emergency Medical Service Officers Jason Byron and Alex Trzepizur, who work closely with the SCPD’s Behavioral Health Unit.

“The number of people who were willing to take five minutes out of their day to learn about opioids, fentanyl and the overdose epidemic was impressive,” said Byron.

Visitors also stopped by a table with purple rocks intended to be decorated with the names of loved ones lost to overdose and fentanyl poisoning.

Called the Purple Rock Project by the mothers who provide the rocks, the finished rocks are placed around parks and other locations, including Gabriel’s Giving Tree Memorial & Recovery Garden at Suffolk County Environmental Center

at the Scully Estate, 550 South Bay Avenue in Islip, as a reminder of how many Long Islanders have died from O.D. and fentanyl poisonings.

“Writing a child’s name on a rock may seem like a small thing, but I think it is a way of saying to the world that their child was once here,” said Carole Trottere, who lost her son Alex in 2018 to a fentanyl poisoning.

Hospital Association Offers $2,000 Scholarship

The Nassau-Suffolk Hospital Council (NSHC) announces a $2,000 scholarship for college juniors/seniors or post graduate students who are studying Journalism, Marketing/ Communications, or Healthcare Administration. (The scholarship is not for clinical-based study.)

The Ann Marie Brown Memorial Scholarship honors the late Ann Marie Brown, who served as vice president for government and public relations for the Hospital Council from 1983 to 1993. The scholarship is administered by the Hospital Council’s Communications Committee. Filing deadline is June 20, 2025. Long Island is one of the best places in the world to be in the summer. From the beaches to the restaurants, and the landmarks to the parks, Long Island has something for every resident and visitor. Here are five things you should consider adding to your bucket list for June – August.

completion of eligibility or recertification applications and referrals to appropriate community agencies.

“It is so important for us to provide our senior citizens with the assistance and information they need in ways that are most convenient to them. These visits allow our seniors to connect with our County’s

senior advocates right in their own communities,” said Legislator Donnelly. “I hope all those interested in the services that the Suffolk County Office for the Aging provides will take advantage of this opportunity.”

This spring, Senior Advocates will be visiting the following locations in the Town of Islip:

• Bishop McGann Housing, 200 Bishop McGann Drive, Central Islip: Monday, June 23, 10 am – 12 pm Advocates assist with the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP – formerly known as food stamps), Medicare Savings Program and Heating Emergency Assistance Program
