North Babylon Teacher Honored With Excellence Award

North Babylon High School teacher Lisa Drance has been named the winner of the first Broadway Education Alliance Award for Excellence in Innovative Theater Arts Education, presented in collaboration with Theatrical Rights Worldwide and Broadway Inbound.

This award recognizes educators who demonstrate the remarkable ability to identify opportunities, think creatively and transform

ideas into successful programs —they are imaginative, passionate and a driving force behind positive change within their organization — providing students a stage on which to explore their dreams and a platform for building value within their community.

“We would like to thank you for your devotion to your students and the theater arts,” said the members of the Alliance. “Your industry peers would like to celebrate

you and the work you’ve performed within your school and through your longstanding participation in the Roger Rees Awards. Your influence cannot be quantified as the magnitude of your love and passion will forever spread through the lives of the young humans you’ve taught.”

Drance was presented the award at the Roger Rees Awards Showcase on May 19.

Hospital Association Offers $2,000 Scholarship

The Nassau-Suffolk Hospital Council (NSHC) announces a $2,000 scholarship for college juniors/seniors or post graduate students who are studying Journalism, Marketing/ Communications, or Healthcare Administration.

(The scholarship is not for clinical-based study.)

The Ann Marie Brown Memorial Scholarship honors the late Ann Marie Brown, who served as vice president for government and public relations for the Hospital Council from 1983 to 1993. The scholarship is administered by the Hospital Council’s Communications Committee. Filing deadline is June 20, 2025. RECIPE OF THE WEEK: Pecan-Stuffed Pork Chops

Families celebrate Dad in unique ways on Father’s Day. Gifts are customary, but so is a delicious meal Dad will love. Many dads will appreciate a meal that goes above and beyond the ordinary, preferably something that is hearty and delicious. These “Pecan-Stuffed Pork Chops” from “Jon Bonnell’s Texas Favorites” (Gibbs Smith) are a great dish to serve family style when everyone gathers around the table for Father’s Day.

Serves 7-8

1 large rack of pork chops, bones in

4 tablespoons butter

1⁄2 yellow onion, chopped

2 ribs celery, chopped

5 cloves garlic, minced

1 1⁄2 cups chicken stock

DIRECTIONS:

Clean the rack of pork well and cut in between the bones to get thick individual pork chops. Cut a large slit down the back side of each chop and insert the tip of a knife 2 to 3 inches inside the chop to create a pocket for the stufﬁng. Do not poke completely through the pork or the stufﬁng will not stay in. In a large saucepan, melt the butter and sauté the onion, celery and garlic until the onion has slightly softened. Add the chicken stock, salt and cayenne and bring to a light simmer. Pour the contents into a mixing bowl and

1⁄4 teaspoon cayenne pepper

2 cups panko bread crumbs

2 cups

2 cups roasted pecans, chopped

More kosher salt and pepper, to taste

add the panko bread crumbs and pecans. Mix together and let cool to room temperature. Stuff as much of the mixture into each pork chop as will ﬁt (overstufﬁng is okay, too). Sprinkle both sides of each chop with salt and pepper to taste, then roast in a preheated 400 F oven for 12 minutes. Turn the chops over once and roast an additional 15 minutes. Check for doneness with a meat thermometer. Cook to medium, or 135 to 140 F.

How Flag Day Got Its Start

Flag Day is commemorated each year in the United States on June 14. Though Flag Day is not an official federal holiday, the day remains significant nonetheless, as it traces its origins all the way back to 1777.

The Second Continental Congress formally adopted the flag of the United States on June 14, 1777. That resolution noted certain characteristics of the new flag, including the alternating red and white stripes that remain part of the flag that is celebrated each June 14.

Flag Day is one of various notable events and holidays commemorated in June, a list that includes Father’s Day, Juneteenth and the summer solstice. That can make it easy for Flag Day to get lost in the proverbial shuffle, but the Farmer’s Almanac notes it is customary for the sitting president of the United States to encourage Americans to display the flag outside of their homes and businesses each June 14. The flag is flown from all public buildings on Flag Day, which the Farmer’s Almanac reports is another rich tradition that dates

back 1877 and the centennial of the flag’s adoption.

President Woodrow Wilson issued a presidential proclamation on June 14, 1916, that designated the day as Flag Day going forward. Thirty-three years after President Wilson’s proclamation, the U.S. Congress officially established June 14 as National Flag Day.

One notable tidbit Americans can consider this Flag Day is the connection between the flag and seamstress Betsy Ross. Many American schoolchildren were taught that Ms. Ross designed and sewed the first American flag, but historians have since discredited that legend. The Farmer’s Almanac notes that many historians now believe George Washington already had a design for a flag with 13 red and white alternating stripes and 13 six-pointed stars set in a circle when he visited Ms. Ross in Philadelphia. And while historians do not doubt that Ms. Ross sewed a flag reflecting the design George Washington brought with him when visiting the seamstress, it’s hard to confirm if she in fact sewed the first flag.

Suffolk Legislator Tom Donnelly (D-Deer Park) is pleased to inform Babylon and Huntington residents about the local Suffolk County Office for the Aging Spring 2025 Senior Advocate Schedule. Senior advocates are County representatives who come out into the community and assist seniors with information gathering, completion of eligibility or recertification applications and referrals to appropriate community agencies.

“It is so important for us to provide our senior citizens with the assistance and information they need in ways that are most convenient to them. These visits allow our seniors to connect with our County’s senior advocates right in

their own communities,” said Legislator Donnelly. “I hope all those interested in the services that the Suffolk County Office for the Aging provides will take advantage of this opportunity.”

Free Senior Medical ID Card Program & Shed The Meds Event

New York State Assemblyman Michael Durso (R-Massapequa Park), in partnership with the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office, is holding a Free Senior Medical ID Card and Shed The Meds Event on Saturday, June 21st from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at the West Babylon Public Library located at 211 NY-109 in West Babylon.

The Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office Medical ID Cards assist seniors, 50 years old and older, or those with medical needs to keep all required medical information available on a small card with them at all times in case of emergency. No registration is required. Walk-ins welcome.

Do you have unused, expired, or unwanted medication? Residents can drop off medications and prescription drugs for safe disposal by the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office. The Alzheimer’s Foundation of America (AFA) will be providing free memory screenings for Long Islanders every Wednesday, during the month of June, from 1:30 pm to 4:30 pm at its new Barbara Rabinowitz Education and Resource Center, located at 149 Schleigel Blvd, in Amityville. Screenings are open to everyone, with no minimum age or insurance prerequisites, and can be scheduled by calling 631-223-4000.

Memory screenings are quick (approximately 1015 minutes), noninvasive, and consist of a series of questions to gauge memory, language, thinking skills and other cognitive functions. They are similar to other routine health screenings, such as those for blood pressure, cholesterol, and skin checks. Screenings are administered one on one by a qualified professional, and results are confidential and provided immediately at the end of the screening. Results are not a diagnosis, but a memory screening can suggest if someone should see a physician for

a full evaluation.

Early detection of memory impairments is vital. Many different conditions can cause memory issues, including treatable or curable conditions such as vitamin deficiencies, thyroid disorders, urinary tract infections, sleep apnea, stress, anxiety, and depression.

Even in the case of a dementia-related illness such as Alzheimer’s, early detection can provide greater opportunity to begin treatments when they are most effective, as well as taking part in a clinical trial. In addition, it affords the person the chance to take advantage of community services, such as support groups and therapeutic programming, which can help maximize quality of life, as well as have a greater say in making legal, financial, and health care decisions.

The National External Diploma Program offers adults 21 and over, the opportunity to receive credit for their life experiences, and earn a high school equivalency diploma without the challenge of taking lengthy timed examinations. NEDP, is a competency based program for students who are unable to attend classes or who prefer to work at home. Successful candidates

for NEDP include former ESL students, students who have been out of school for prolonged periods of time, or students who fare better without the structure of tests. This program is an alternative to other programs.
