Legislator Tom Donnelly Honors Cheryl Otero
As 17th District Healthcare Hero
Suffolk County Legislator Tom Donnelly (D-Deer Park) recently selected and honored Cheryl Otero of Deer Park, a valued Catholic Health Long Island employee, as his 2026 Healthcare Hero.
Ms. Otero has spent the past 14 years serving patients, providers and staff in the Catholic Health system. She is currently Director of the Physician Onboarding Team where she helps ensure new physicians and medical practices have the resources and support needed to successfully begin caring for patients. Throughout her career, she has held a variety of leadership positions, including Assistant Manager at Family Medical in West Sayville and Director of
Catholic Health’s Patient Navigation Hub. Known for her professionalism and collaborative approach, she has earned the respect of colleagues and providers across the organization.
Outside of her professional responsibilities, Ms. Otero volunteers her time creating handmade chemo caps for cancer patients at Good Samaritan University Hospital and infant caps for newborns at St. Charles Hospital. A former U.S. Army Reservist, she resides in Deer Park where she is an active member of the community whose dedication to helping others extends far beyond the workplace.
“Cheryl Otero is a superb example of compassion, professionalism and service in healthcare, all
qualities of a hero” said Legislator Donnelly. “Her commitment to supporting both patients and healthcare providers, combined with her willingness to give back to others in need, makes her truly deserving of recognition. On behalf of the 17th Legislative District and all of Suffolk County, I am proud to recognize her as my Healthcare Hero.”
To acknowledge and honor healthcare workers who inspire the entire community with their
exceptional service and selfless contributions, the Suffolk County Legislature passed a resolution in 2021 designating June as “Healthcare Heroes Month.”
Each Legislator selects a Healthcare Hero, and their accomplishments are read into the record. This year’s honorees were recognized at the June 2 General Meeting in Hauppauge, where Legislator Donnelly presented Ms. Otero with a special proclamation.

Deer Park Fire Department Honors Service And Dedication At Annual Awards Dinner
The Deer Park Fire Department recently held its Annual Awards Dinner, bringing together firefighters, EMS personnel, family members, and community leaders to recognize the outstanding service and commitment of its members.
The evening celebrated the men and women who dedicate countless hours to protecting the Deer Park community, responding to emergencies at all hours of the day and night. Award
The summer solstice offers the most hours of daylight all year. According to Space.com, the summer solstice occurs when one of the Earth’s poles has its maximum tilt toward the sun. The summer solstice falls on June 20, 21 or 22 in the Northern Hemisphere.
The 2026 summer solstice (first day of summer) in the Northern Hemisphere is Sunday, June 21, 2026. The longest day of the year and the beginning of astrological summer is a source of celebration for many people. Come the summer solstice, the warm
recipients were recognized for their achievements and contributions, while the department also honored several longtime members whose decades of service have left a lasting impact on the organization.
Among those recognized were Ex-Chief Anthony Macaluso, who celebrated an extraordinary 50 years of service, and Ex-Chief Frank “The Senior Man” Pfister, who was honored for an incredible 65 years of dedication to the department.
Town of Babylon Councilman Terence McSweeney praised the department’s members for their selfless commitment to public service.
“Firefighters and EMS personnel represent the very best of our community,” said McSweeney. “They answer the alarm without hesitation, often not knowing who is in need, but always ready to help a neighbor in their time of crisis. It was an
honor to recognize the members of the Deer Park Fire Department and to celebrate the remarkable legacies of Ex-Chief Anthony Macaluso and ExChief Frank Pfister, whose decades of service have inspired generations of firefighters.”
Suffolk County Legislator Tom Donnelly, a member of the Deer Park Fire Department, also reflected on the significance of the evening.
“The Deer Park Fire
Department has a proud tradition of service, and nights like this remind us of the dedication that makes our department so strong,” said Donnelly. “Honoring members like Anthony Macaluso and Frank Pfister is a testament to the values of commitment, leadership, and sacrifice that have defined this department for generations. We are grateful to every member who continues to answer the call and serve our community.”
Celebrate The Start Of Summer
weather stabilizes and there are more days of sunshine and mild temperatures. Summer also is a season for school breaks and family vacations, representing additional reasons to look forward to the summer solstice. People can commemorate the start of summer in many different ways, including these fun ideas.
• Plan a hike. With a greater number of daylight hours, the solstice is the perfect time to head outdoors and enjoy the sights. There’s no need to rush, as the sun sets
late in the evening, giving those who have to work or attend school earlier in
the day an opportunity to enjoy a hike after signing off.
• Take a photo. Make it a tradition to take a “first day of summer” photo each year to catalog the years going by. Everyone can pose in their favorite summer garb or get coordinating t-shirts.
• Change the decor. The first day of summer is a perfect time to change a home’s decor to reflect bright, summery details. Pull out bright throw pillows, switch to citrus or coconut-scented candles to establish a beachy mood and fill a bowl with limes, lemons and oranges for an easy

summer centerpiece.
• Make a summer treat. Spend the day trying a new summer recipe, such as homemade ice cream, s’mores, fresh lemonade, or a frozen cocktail (mocktail) like piña coladas. Enjoy in honor of the start of summer.
• Take a plunge: Make an inaugural summer trip to the seaside, a pool or a lake and do your best cannonball into the water. Summer is a peak time for swimming, water sports and boating, so it pays to dive right into these activities.

Deer Park Honors Retiring Trustee Al Centamore
The Deer Park School District community held a surprise celebration, “A Falcon’s Legacy,” on June 11 in the Deer Park High School auditorium, honoring retiring Board of Education trustee Al Centamore, whose 30 years of service left a lasting impact on the district, its students, and the community.
Current and former administrators, teachers, coaches, students, staff, classmates, friends, and family gathered for an evening of reflection
and appreciation. The program featured musical performances by the Deer Park High School Jazz Band, String Quartet, seventhgrader Jayden River, and the Deer Park High School Select Choir.
Speakers included Superintendent Jim Cummings, Suffolk County Legislator Tom Donnelly, Board of Education members, former trustees, colleagues, friends, and Centamore’s children, Alicia Freda and Joe Centamore.
“Tonight we are all here
for the privilege of honoring the legacy of a truly great man and a true Falcon,” Cummings said, praising Centamore’s decades of dedication and service to the Deer Park community.
Board President Donna Marie Elliott called Centamore “our hero,” noting that his legacy of love, kindness, and devotion will continue to inspire future generations.
“Thank you, Al, for your service, your friendship, and your guidance,” trustee Jerry Jean-Pierre said. “The
community will endure because of the foundation you helped build.”
Freda, who was elected last month to succeed her father on the board, said his lifelong commitment to Deer Park inspired others to lead with compassion and service.
“I was completely shocked and so appreciative of what everyone said,” Centamore said. “If I had done one-tenth of what the educators here do every week, then I would consider what I have done a success.”
