More than 800,000 officers nationwide put themselves at risk each day to protect their communities, according to data shared by law enforcement advocacy organizations. In 2025 alone, 111 officers died in the line of duty, and hundreds more were injured by gunfire or assaulted while performing their duties. National Law Enforcement Appreciation Day was established in 2015 by Concerns of Police Survivors, a national nonprofit that supports the families of fallen officers. The observance calls on the public to recognize the dedication of law enforcement officers and the sacrifices made not only by those who serve, but also by the families who stand behind them. Americans are encouraged to show their support through simple acts, including wearing blue, sending messages of thanks, and acknowledging officers in their communities. Since the country’s founding in 1776, more than 25,000 law enforcement officers have died in the line of duty, according to the Officer Down Memorial Page.

Suffolk Legislator Tom Donnelly, pictured right, presents a County Proclamation to Theodore “Ted” Corn of Deer Park as his 2025 Veteran of the Year at the William H. Rogers Legislature Building in Hauppauge. Suffolk County Legislator Tom Donnelly (D-Deer Park) recently honored Theodore “Ted” Corn of Deer Park as the 17th Legislative District’s 2025 Veteran of the Year, recognizing him for his distinguished military service and lifelong dedication to the community. Mr. Corn served in the 71st Infantry as a National Guard Specialist (SP5) and Army Reserve Veteran from 1969 to 1979. During his service, he completed extensive field training, supported active-duty readiness missions and earned the respect of his peers and superiors through his discipline and leadership. He continues to honor the military tradition as a member of the 11th Honor Guard,

where he achieved the rank of E6, performing ceremonial duties that pay tribute to fallen service members. Following his military career, Mr. Corn has remained a committed public servant. He is an almost four-decade volunteer with the Deer Park Fire Department and currently holds the position of Captain of the Fire Police. He is also a Service Officer for American Legion Post 94, a past Chancellor Commander of the Knights of Pythias and an active member of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary. “With a lifetime of service to others, first in uniform and now in our local community, Ted Corn embodies and demonstrates the ideals,

values and principles that make this world a better place,” said Legislator Donnelly. “I am grateful and privileged to recognize the service, sacrifices and the freedoms he protected, and continues to protect, and honor him as my 2025 Veteran of the Year.” Resolution No. 841-2024 established a recognition program in which each Legislator selects a veteran residing in his or her legislative district to coincide with our national celebration of Veterans Day, further recognizing individuals for their courage, honor, patriotism and sacrifice. Mr. Corn and the other recipients were recognized at the General Meeting in Hauppauge, where Legislator Donnelly presented him with a County Proclamation.

Americans across the country will observe National Law Enforcement Appreciation Day, and in New York, state Sen. Monica R. Martinez announced the signing of legislation she sponsored to support the families of fallen law enforcement officers. The measure authorizes local governments to provide a property tax exemption of up to 50% on the primary residence of a surviving spouse of a police officer killed in the line of duty. Municipalities must opt in before the exemption can be applied, and have the option to reduce the percentage of tax relief benefit provided within their localities. The law enforcement tax abatement legislation was the second first responder survivor tax relief bill sponsored by Sen. Martinez during the 2025 legislative session to be signed into law. In December, Gov. Kathy Hochul also signed legislation that allows municipalities to opt in to extending the property tax exemption to surviving spouses of volunteer firefighters and volunteer ambulance workers who were killed in the line of duty after serving between two and five years. The National External Diploma Program offers adults 21 and over, the opportunity to receive credit for their life experiences, and earn a high school equivalency diploma without the challenge of taking lengthy timed examinations. NEDP, is a competency based program for students who are unable to attend classes or who prefer to work at home. Successful candidates for NEDP include former ESL students, students who have been out of school for prolonged periods of time, or students who fare better without the structure of tests. The Public Libraries of Suffolk County recently announced that it reached a record-breaking four million digital book checkouts on Livebrary. com in 2025. This important milestone is indicative of the popularity of ebooks, audiobooks, and other digital media among library patrons in Suffolk County, and the reach public libraries have within the communities they serve. Suffolk County readers check out over 11,000 digital items per day, on average, from the digital branch of Suffolk County’s 56 public libraries. The Public Libraries of Suffolk County and Livebrary.com have been providing readers 24/7 access to ebooks and audiobooks since 2010 via OverDrive and, later, its Libby reading app. Since
