What’s Your Story?

Center Gold, 2340 Middle Country Rd., Centereach, N.Y. Center Gold II 1097 Portion Road, Farmingville, N.Y.

East Islip High School held a special Patriot Day ceremony on the morning of September 11th, dedicating a bronze plaque donated by the student council. The plaque, displayed in the school’s lobby, is emblazoned with the words “Freedom Is Never Free” and honors the memory of East Islip graduates who have given their lives in service to their country. Present at the solemn ceremony was recently retired teacher Dorsy Palios, the school’s student council and STARS club adviser last year. Palios was the main driver of the plaque project, which was originally scheduled for dedication this past May. That date coincided with a day the school was closed, so the ceremony was moved to September

to mark the 11th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks. Two students who worked with Palios in designing and purchasing the plaque, 11th-graders Rachel Lopicollo and Thea Tsolomitis, were also invited to attend, as was Regina Pope, a teacher assistant at the high school. Pope’s son, U.S. Army Cpl. Robert C. Pope II of East Islip, died on November 7th, 2005 while serving in Iraq. Superintendent of Schools John J. Finello and Principal William Brennen, who acknowledged the special admiration and level of support shown to the nation’s military by the East Islip community, welcomed representatives of several service branches, all recruiters and liaisons to the Long Continued On Page 4

Speaking Of Siri By: Jamie Lynn Ryan A few weeks ago, my friend and I got the bright inspiration to walk all the way to Kismet from the Fire Island Lighthouse. I had been told it wasn’t an extremely long journey, and, timed just right in the early fall, would be quite lovely and scenic. Well, it was certainly scenic. Considering that there is basically one route from the Lighthouse leading into the Fire Island communities, one would think there would be no need for directions. But, just for kicks, I decided to put the address of the restaurant we planned to go to – Surf’s Out – into my phone and ask the famous Siri for directions. Immediately, my trusty little map dropped a pin at our current location, as well as another quite some distance away. At first glance, it seemed rather far, but we paid no mind. We just started walking. Pretty soon, we saw the sign telling us we were entering Kismet Village. Okay, we were on the right track. My friend thought she remem-

bered that there was a particular cross street we would need to make a left turn on, in order to head north to the Bay side of the Island, where the restaurants were located. Not quite certain which road it was, we figured surely there would be a sign. Oh, there was a sign all right! The next marker we came across welcomed us to the Village of Saltaire – in other words, we were now exiting Kismet. Hmmm… interesting. And yet there remained the little glowing dot on my phone, still way off in the distance. Something was very wrong. As I zoomed in further, I started to faintly make out the words “Ocean Beach” stamped on the map. Ocean Beach?! As in that town I had not too long ago take a ferry to?! I didn’t even know you could walk there if you wanted to! And who in their right mind would want to? Uh-oh, we were seriously off track. At that point, short of knocking on a local resident’s door – many of whom had already packed it in for the season – the only other

passers-by consisted of bicyclists zooming by – and deer…lots of deer, galloping across the street, darting from one yard to the other presumably in search of something to munch on. Ah, but then, out of the blue came an older couple, clearly local residents out for a leisurely afternoon stroll. “Excuse me, but can you tell us if there is a restaurant near here?” my friend inquired. “Oh yes,” the man said. Oh good, I thought. “But not here…” Uhoh. “It’s way back in Kismet,” he gestured in the direction from which we had just come. Oh boy. “How far, exactly?” “Oh, it’s a good hike,” his wife said apologetically. We politely thanked them and began the long process of retracing our steps, finally arriving at our intended destination – approximately 3.5 miles and 1 hour and 20 minutes after departing. All for the experience of walking to Kismet. It was an experience all right. Suffice it to say, Siri will not be invited on our next journey.

The Jacob’s Light Foundation, a non-profit dedicated to providing overseas troops with small comforts that are enjoyed in the United States, recently held a ribboncutting ceremony to celebrate their grand opening at the Islip Foreign Trade Zone. The Foundation was started by Dorine Kenney (center, with scissors) in honor of her son, SPC Jacob Fletcher, who was a paratrooper in the U.S. Army. SPC Fletcher was killed by a roadside bomb

while serving in Iraq on November 14th, 2003. Just eleven days after his death, Ms. Kenney shipped the first package of supplies to her son’s comrades. From that first package has grown an organization that impacts thousands of soldiers with each shipment. “I served two tours in Afghanistan, and I know how much it means to soldiers when we are able to enjoy supplies shipped from home that we cannot get overseas,” said Islip Town Supervisor Tom

Croci. “The Jacob’s Light Foundation serves a critical function to improving the morale of our overseas troops, and we’re truly proud to have them here at our facility.” “Packing Nights”, where volunteers can help package goods being sent overseas, are held on the last Tuesday evening of every month. The college sophomore’s experience in computer programming, both at home and in East Islip’s schools, came in handy. “I had some programming background coming into this project,” Bernichon said. “I was a student in Raymond Willie's AP computer science class. I really learned a lot from him and he's a great teacher. I know that Mr. Willie’s projects pushed me to learn more about programming and certainly gave me a head start compared to other students. Course Counsel also has a scorecard, keeps track of over/under par, and now provides an option to tweet your score with Twitter.” Bernichon and Skubic spent approximately three months developing the app, which took over 5,000 lines of code. “We split the app into smaller, more manageable projects that each of us would work on,” recalled Bernichon. “We pieced together our work and eventually were able to produce a polished app ready for Apple’s App Store.” The finished app retails for 99 cents and has received very positive reviews. Eagle Scout Badge Ann, NY for several summers, and has participated in various Troop activities including hiking the Gettysburg historic trails and Washington, D.C. Troop trip. To become an Eagle Scout, the Scout must earn 21 Merit Badges, of which 12 are specifically Eagle required, progress through six rank advancements – from Tenderfoot, Second Class, First Class, Star, Life, then Eagle, and also plan, develop, and implement a major Service Project for the Community. Matthew has actually successfully completed 30 Merit Badges. The Service Project that Matthew conducted with the assistance of his fellow Troop members was the design and development of a kneeler and flower/shrubs planter at the Our Lady of Knock Shrine at The Ancient Order of Hibernians Division 7 Hall in East Islip. As Matthew reflects on his Scouting experience, he recently said, “My Eagle Project has been one of my greatest accomplishments. I never fully understood the depths at which it took to complete an Eagle Project until now. The road to the becoming an Eagle Scout has been a very valuable learning experience. Scouting has been an experience that I will treasure and carry with me forever.” Matthew is a Senior at East Islip High School, where he has been on the school’s Honor Roll each and every semester and involved in a variety of clubs and organizations – such as being a member of the Math Honors Society and a member of the Chess Club. Matthew also wrestles on the school’s Varsity

Wrestling Team and has played on the High School Football Team. Matthew is also a member of the newly formed East Islip High School Medical and Health Technology Career Academy under the direction of Israel Malinowitzer and Lisa Neri. Music has been an important part of Matthew’s life as a Bagpiper in The Roisin Dubh Pipe Band, affiliated with The Ancient Order of Hibernians Division 7, East Islip, NY. Matthew has competed against other Bagpipers, where he has placed in 10 of the 11 individual competitions this past year. Community Service has been a part of Matthew’s personal and Troop life, where he has been an Altar Server at St. Mary Roman Catholic Church, East Islip, has served as a math tutor to students at local school districts, and also has participated in many Eagle Service Projects within Troop 205. With Matthew’s interests in becoming a Veterinarian in his career, he was selected and participated in the Cornell University PreVeterinary College Program over this last summer in Ithaca, NY where he earned 3 college credits. He has also volunteered at the East Islip Animal Hospital. Matthew has a goal to enter college as a Pre-Vet Major in the Fall of 2013, after his High School Graduation in June, 2013. Matthew is the son of Ann Marie and Edward Brown of East Islip. Matthew’s father, Edward, is an Assistant Scoutmaster in Troop 205.

The John F. Kennedy Elementary School PTA held a special Kindergarten Parent Breakfast on the morning of September 20th. PTA President Tracy Rice, Vice President Susan Kavanagh, council delegate Danielle Maccarino, and the membership team, Louise Kniff and Kelly Caragiulo, welcomed the newest parents to the school.

Refreshments and tasty treats – including homemade coffeecake – were arrayed in the school’s cafeteria and useful information was presented in a sociable setting. “It was so nice to see such a wonderful turnout of kindergarten parents,” said Rice. “We like to host this informal event so that parents who may have children entering school

for the first time can relax and meet other parents like themselves.” “I remember how intimidating it was when I first came to a PTA meeting,” recalled Kavanagh. “It is so important to everyone on our board at JFK to make sure that all our new parents feel genuinely welcome and comfortable.”

Relatives and neighbors of William Mahoney Jr., of Ronkonkoma, were recently joined by elected officials and members of the Lakeland Fire Department in a ceremony to dedicate Beaver Lane in his honor. On September 11th, 2001, William was serving with Rescue Company 4 of Elmhurst, Queens. His company was among the first to respond to the crisis, and he died when the towers collapsed. PARENT BREAKFAST - Pictured: JFK PTA council delegate Danielle Maccarino, “William’s memory President Tracy Rice, Vice President Susan Kavanagh; JFK PTA membership team reminds us to continue to Louise Kniff and Kelly Ferraro. Photo by: Greg Fasolino, Syntax strive for the values that

he held dear: love for our friends and family, and service to our community,” said Islip Supervisor Tom Croci. At the time of his death William was just 38, with four children. He began his firefighting career as a junior fireman with the Lakeland Fire Department, and continued to serve in the department as an adult. Early in his career, before joining the New York Fire Department, William served as a New York City policeman. His duties often required him to

utilize his scuba training, and he was part of the task force that recovered debris and wreckage from the TWA Flight 800 crash. He was known throughout his neighborhood and the community not only for his work as a firefighter, but also for his involvement in the Connetquot Youth Association. In addition to Rescue Company 4, William was one of five members of the Lakeland Volunteer Fire Department to lose their life on September 11th, 2001.
