They also provide hospitals and childcare facilities with therapeutic and recreational equipment, support families with financial assistance to defray medical expenses, fulfill patient’s wishlists throughout the year (for those 18 years of age and younger) and they assist sick and underpriviledged children in other ways that are needed. ISLIP - SOUTH BAY’S NEIGHBOR NEWSPAPERS - WEDNESDAY DECEMBER 4, 2019 • www.southbaysneighbor.com

John Theissen Children’s Foundation began after their Executive Director & Founder, John Theissen, had stayed at Schneider’s Children’s Hospital in New Hyde Park when he was 17 years old. John needed to have brain surgery for a brain tumor that he unfortunately developed. The day he walked into the hospital he met a 7 year old girl named Tasha. She spent many hours with John for the next few days, always trying to make him happy. Tasha received very little family support, however she expected her family to attend a holiday party that was sponsored by the hospital staff. Unfortunately they did not attend. John was too ill to take her, so his family did. When Santa asked her what she had wanted she replied, “I would like a teddy bear for my friend upstairs.” John felt fortunate to be that friend. Tasha’s positive attitude and generous spirit inspired John. Once he got out of the hospital he wanted to help children just like her. In 1992, John held a toy drive during the holiday season to benefit children in local hospitals. During this first drive, he collected over 800 new toys in just 2 weeks! That was

However, it’s important not to fall victim to identity theft or other not-so-jolly situations. Save yourself from falling victim by recognizing these sources of scams: Avoid suspicious websites. Especially when looking for the hottest toy of the season, you may come across a variety of sites. However, if you see one that seems questionable, has an outdated design and/or has multiple pop-up windows, it may not be a legitimate retailer. Refrain from making any purchases on these types of sites to ensure that your personal information does not get compromised. Don’t overlook the URL. In addition to avoiding suspicious looking sites, make sure your site has either a little padlock icon on the left side of the search bar and/or says “HTTPS” — emphasis on the ‘S’. This layer of security is essential

when online shopping and sharing personal information. If the site is not secured or the URL only features “HTTP,” your browser may point this out to you in the search bar. Unsecure networks and devices. If you’re going to make any purchase online, make sure you take the necessary steps to protect yourself. Use security software and firewalls to keep your information secured. Be sure to avoid public computers and public WiFi networks to make sure no one can potentially access your information. And the top way to make sure your information is protected is to regularly change your password (usually every three to six months) to reduce the chances of someone accessing your personal profiles, data, etc. Pay with protection. Ensure your online safety by not only logging onto

More often than not, your gut feeling is usually right so delete the message immediately if it is actually not from a person you know. Look out for gift-card scams. Scammers aren’t just interested in stealing your identity, credit- or debit-card information, some want your gift cards too. Be wary of any websites or phone representatives that only take gift cards from other retailers — like Walmart or Google Play gift card — for payment. Any merchant who limits your payment options to gift card only is usually trouble.

Even if it looks somewhat legitimate, keep in mind that criminals use this scheme to get you to provide personal information. You can also get a virus on your computer simply by opening the email, so be cautious. In addition to unfamiliar emails, be on the lookout for phishing emails disguised as if they came directly from family members, co-workers, etc. If the message looks strange, double-check the sender address to see if it is actually from that person.

By using these payment methods, you’ll have an added layer of consumer protection that can guard you against fraud. However don’t get a false sense of security, if you notice any suspicious activity on your credit card, contact your provider immediately. Beware of phishing emails. While you’re skimming your email this holiday season for any coupons or promotions be wary of any enticing emails from an unfamiliar sender

Free Marriage Licenses For Active Military The Islip Town Board is proud to have recently approved a resolution to waive the Town fee for a marriage license, when either party applying is an active duty member of the US Armed Forces. Marriage licenses are $40. In August, 2019, New York State waived its portion of $22.50. The Islip Town Board followed suit, voting unanimously

at the October Town Board meeting to waive the remaining $17.50. Islip Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter, along with members of the Town Board, unanimously approved the resolution at the meeting. Recent changes to New York State’s Domestic Relations Law now allows for Townships to waive their portion of the fee.

“In the Town of Islip, active members of the military can now obtain a marriage license entirely for FREE,” said Islip Supervisor Angie Carpenter. “This is a small way of showing our appreciation to our servicemen and women, who give of themselves each and every day to ensure our freedom,” added Supervisor Carpenter.

Transplant Recipient Meets Donor’s Daughter

It was a special moment at Long Island MacArthur Airport Friday, when a heart transplant recipient met the donor’s daughter for the first time. Long Island resident Raymond Miehl, 62, met Ashley Brayton of Ohio, whose father’s heart now beats in his chest, after she exited the gate from her Southwest Airlines flight. Ashely’s father, Ronnie Davis died on March 1, 2016 at the age of 46. On March 3, 2016 Miehl received

his heart. The families first contacted each two years ago, and have been planning this meeting for more than a year. “I say you can’t take your organs to heaven, so you might as well give somebody a fighting chance that might not otherwise have one,” said Brayton. Miehl expressed his gratitude and vowed to honor her father’s memory by taking care of his health. “We were very grateful and thankful, that there’s somebody still going with

her father, that she knows that her father is still going and that he’s living still. And I’m taking care of it as much as I can and as good as I can,” said Miehl. “I would definitely ask people to donate. My wife is a donor, my daughter’s a donor. I don’t know if I could be, but if I could, I would definitely be a donor. And I think that people would definitely benefit from other people being donors,” he added. The families plan to maintain contact.

Town Hall West, 401 Main Street, Islip, or at the Office of Councilwoman Mary Kate Mullen, located a Jacob Ockers House, 965 Montauk Hwy, Oakdale. Help make this holiday season the most wonderful time of the year for all.

Girls Lacrosse Players Sign To Play In College

ISLIP - SOUTH BAY’S NEIGHBOR NEWSPAPERS - WEDNESDAY DECEMBER 4, 2019 • www.southbaysneighbor.com

Four terrific East Islip High School senior girls lacrosse players – Hannah Calarco, Alexa Fusco, Alyssa Levy and Rachel Schlesinger – signed national letters of intent on Nov. 13, committing to continue their athletic careers next fall in college. Calarco, who plays midfield/attack, will attend Coastal Carolina University in Conway, South Carolina, where she plans to major in physical education. An Honor Roll student, she has been on the varsity lacrosse team for four years, was named a Scholar-Athlete and earned 2019 All-County honorable mention. Calarco also played for the Legacy travel lacrosse team. Fusco, a middle defender, will play for Long Island University team, where she will major in mathematics and secondary education. A member of the varsity team since her freshman year, Fusco earned AllDivision honors for the last two years and the Suffolk Zone award. A multisport athlete, she played

on the varsity basketball team for three years as well as the varsity soccer team for all four years, earning All-Division and All-County honors in the latter sport. Fusco serves as president of the school’s Girls Leaders Club and vice president of the Foreign Language National Honor Society, and is a member of its National Honor Society, Yearbook Club and symphony orchestra. Levy, who plays attack, will attend Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island. She is undecided on a major. A lacrosse player since prekindergarten, Levy has been on the varsity team all four years of high school, earning All-County honors twice as well as All-County honorable mention. She also played for three years on EI’s varsity field hockey team, earning AllCounty honors twice as well as All-Division and All-Tournament honors; on the school’s basketball team for one year; and for the Legacy travel lacrosse team since seventh grade.

Levy is a member of the school’s National Honor Society, Foreign Language National Honor Society, Girls Leaders Club and Yearbook Club. Schlesinger, a goalie, signed with Rollins University in Winter Park, Florida, where she plans to study pre-med and major in biology. A four-year varsity lacrosse starter, she earned All-Division honors. As an athlete, Schlesinger earned Scholar-Athlete and High Minds in Motion awards and was also a member of both the East Islip varsity swim team and Legacy lacrosse travel team since seventh grade. She is a member of the school’s SADD club and Key Club. “It has been an incredible experience watching this group develop as athletes,” said Steven Levy, East Islip’s varsity girls head coach. “I have had the pleasure of being in the front row throughout their careers. They are a special group of athletes, students and members of our community.”

Artists Showcased At Local Library Artwork from more than three dozen East Islip High School students from photography, electronic illustration and studio in art classes was recently showcased at the East Islip Public Library. The event was curated by National Art Honor Society student Michael Kilbourne. Dr. Deborah Smith, principal of the district’s John F. Kennedy Elementary School, initiated the partnership with the library and attended the opening along with John Dolan, the

district’s superintendent of schools; Assistant Superintendent Paul Manzo, the assistant superintendent for instruction and personnel; and Dr. Robert J. Wottawa II, the district’s director of art, ENL, music and world languages. “It was my first time being shown in a gallery and it was nice to have my family there,” said student Steven Brown. “This is a huge step for me and my future.” “It was an honor to be chosen, and it was exciting

to see the great work other students contributed to the show,” said student Thomas Tricoukes. “It was our first year at the library gallery and it was a great night of beautiful artwork for our students and their families,” said teacher Joy Taylor. “The library has such a beautiful space and it was such a wonderful opportunity to showcase student artwork,” said teacher Heather Toomey. “They are all so talented.”

TRAINING FOCUSES ON LEADERSHIP SKILLS - Former NYC Transit Chief, Joseph Fox, conducted a two-day training exercise with Town of Islip Public Safety officials this week. The topic, “7 Habits of Highly Effective People,” focuses on building and sustaining positive relationships by facilitating a better understanding of a person’s role in various personal and professional relationships. The course is based on Stephen R. Covey’s book by the same name published in 1989, which has sold more than 24 million copies, and remains as relevant today as it did then. The 7 Habits are applicable to all people in their personal and professional lives, according to the author. “The Town of Islip strives to move the needle in employee growth and development,” said Islip Supervisor Angie Carpenter. “This course is one of many we’ve hosted by Former Chief Fox, and each and every one has been enlightening and well-received by our departments,” she added.

standard for HVAC system cleaning and its members must have at least one certified Air Systems Cleaning Specialist (ASCS) on staff, comply with a Code of Ethics and acquire continuing education credits. High school students from Islip Academic Center walked into the cafeteria at Tecumseh Elementary School, bearing 20 birdhouses they made for the grade school students. The two groups of students came together and painted the birdhouses so they could be brought home. Islip Academic Center (IAC) and Tecumseh Elementary School (TES) are both Eastern Suffolk BOCES schools. IAC provides support and services to high school aged students with special needs, and TES provides special education series to

students from kindergarten to sixth grade. The students at IAC built and painted the birdhouses with white primer during their woodshop class. When they visited the students at TES, they brought colorful paint, stickers, glitter, glue, and other art supplies so the grade school students could decorate the birdhouses as they saw fit. During the visit, the older students from IAC helped the elementary school students in a variety of ways. Some students brainstormed ideas that could be painted on the birdhouses, while another

used his artistic ability to draw an outline that his younger partner could color in. The opportunity to work with students from another school was beneficial to the high school students from IAC. “A lot of our students don’t have siblings at home,” said David Rosman, teacher of Carpentry at IAC. “This gives them an opportunity to provide mentorship to someone that they could see as a younger brother or sister. It’s a way for them to give back, and see how much more there is outside of high school.”

How to Be Safe from Fires (NAPSI)—Two in five people say they’re more likely to win the lottery than lose their home in a fire, according to a 2019 national American Red Cross survey. Yet the odds of dying from exposure to fire or smoke (nearly 1 in 1,500) are greater than winning the lottery (typically 1 in millions). Because seven people die from home fires each day in the U.S., the Red Cross is working with community partners to prevent deaths and injuries through its Home Fire Campaign. Everyday Actions Cause Fires In the survey, 96 percent

17

Students Build Homes For Birds

of U.S. adults said they’ve engaged in everyday activities that can cause home fires. This includes over 70 percent of people who have left the kitchen while cooking, which is the leading cause of home fires. How to Be Safe The Red Cross asks people to never leave the kitchen while cooking and to: • Test your smoke alarms monthly. • Practice your home fire escape plan twice a year.

You can also help people through the Home Fire Campaign, which has installed over 1.6 million free smoke alarms and helped save over 550 lives nationwide since launching in 2014. • Install free smoke alarms and educate families about fire safety. Volunteers are also needed to help people recover from home fires. Contact your local Red Cross chapter for opportunities. • Donate to support the Red Cross mission. Your donation can help provide More information and free services for those in free safety resources are at need. redcross.org/homefires. Visit redcross.org for Help #EndHomeFires more information.

10 Fall And Winter Energy-Saving Tips According to the US Department of Energy, the typical US family spends at least $2,200 per year on energy bills—with nearly half of that paying for heating and cooling. To help you lower your utility bills this fall and winter, here are 10 tips from Rebecca Gramuglia, Personal Finance Expert at TopCashback.com: Bundle up on warm accessories. The cheapest, easiest and coziest way to stay warm this winter without a spike in your heating bill is to wear warm socks and sweaters while inside. You can also cuddle up in extra blankets while sleeping and lounging! If you feel that your floors are

cold, consider purchasing an area rug to insulate the floor. Install blackout curtains. Keeping your electricity bill low can be tricky, but it is possible with the necessary items at hand. Save up to 25 percent off home heating and cooling this year by swapping out your regular curtains with Blackout Energy-Efficient curtains that blackout 99 percent of outside light and up to 40 percent of unwanted noise. You can purchase blackout curtains and other winter essentials at a discounted price by shopping via a third-party rebates site such as TopCashback to shop your favorite retailers including Target and Walmart to

receive money back on qualifying purchases. Adjust the thermostat. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, homeowners can save money when they are sleeping or not home. When you are asleep or out of the house, turn your thermostat back 10° to 15° for eight hours and save around 10 percent a year on your heating and cooling bills. Install a programmable thermostat to make it easier to control the temperature while you’re away from home or catching some zzz’s. Perform regular maintenance on your furnace. Winterizing a home is a great way for

homeowners to prepare for the cold months. Keep your furnace and vents properly maintained and cleaned to reduce energy consumption. Take shorter showers. Don’t waste your time in the shower. Focus on getting in and out. If you can take cold showers, even better! You will ultimately reduce the expense of heating up water. Don’t let the water run while doing dishes or brushing your teeth. Letting the water run is a waste of time and money. Make it a habit of turning the sink off between brushing, and washing dishes. Turn down your water heater. There’s no point in heating the water if you’re not home to use it!

631-422-9292

About 14-25 percent of the energy consumed in your home is due to running a water heater. Lower the temperature 10-20 degrees or turn the knob to “vacation mode” to save energy while you’re not home. Switch to LED lights. ‘Tis the season for festive decorations and lights! Use LED holiday lights to reduce the cost of decorating inside and outside of your home. LED bulbs offer the brightest light for the least amount of money and are better perceived by consumers when compared to other energy-saving light bulbs such as halogen and compact fluorescent. Consider eco-friendly options. Sustainable

updates to your investment property not only are good for the environment, but they can also help cut costs on your regular expenses in the long run. Look into ecofriendly landscaping, smart tech options such as smart lighting and thermostats, and replacing old windows and siding. Unplug to save on your electricity bill. Minimize a major bill at home by unplugging all unused electrical devices. Electronic devices have a tendency to continuously pull small amounts of electricity that can add up quickly. Eliminate that unnecessary usage by unplugging any items or power strips you’re not using.
