Army Soldier Desperate For Help To Rescue Cat From The Middle East Being deployed to the Middle East can be challenging for any U.S. soldier. But when you get difficult family news from back home, it can make getting through that period even more difficult. When Army Sergeant Ash received difficult family news, she took comfort in a rescued kitten that was near death.

Now people wonder if she saved the kitten, or if the kitten actually saved her.

Coming back home to the States, she is desperate to bring the cat, Rona, along with her. To help make it happen, she has turned to Guardians of Rescue, which has a reputation of helping soldiers.

“We know all too well how important and lifesaving these pets are to our soldiers stationed in the Middle East,” explains Robert Misseri, president of Guardians of Rescue, an animal rescue organization. “When they come back home, they can’t bear to leave them there, and we agree that it’s not safe. Leaving the cat in the Middle East will end up being a death sentence for it.

We will make every effort to bring Rona home to her, but we need the public’s support to help make it happen.”

Sgt. Ash’s roommate worked for a veterinarian on base, where they had been given a rescued kitten that was only a week old.

They didn’t know if it would make it, as it was near death, and they knew she needed around-the-clock care.

That’s when she decided to hook up Sgt. Ash with the kitten, thinking that taking care of her would help distract her thoughts from all the family issues that were weighing on her.

Sgt. Ash took the kitten and gave it all the care that it needed. Twice she thought she almost lost her, but the kitten held on and pushed through. Once she overcame being sick, she decided to name her Rona, which was after the coronavirus, because she felt that the virus is tough to fight, and

Rona had put up a great fight. She went on to spend all of her time with Rona, creating a loving bond and seeing her as a sign of hope and strength.

“We saved each other and we belong together,” shares Sgt. Ash. “I pray that Guardians of Rescue will be able to bring Rona home to the States, where we can live out our lives together.

I’m grateful for their help, as well as to everyone who donates to help make it possible.”

Guardians of Rescue is no stranger to helping soldiers bring their pets back from deployment. They have helped many people bring back their dogs and cats, all through the help of the public. Longevity in marriage is something to be celebrated. Couples who reach fiftieth and sixtieth wedding anniversaries often commemorate those anniversaries with big parties. But there are some around the world who would consider golden anniversary celebrants to still be newlyweds. In December 2015, Karam Chand, 110, and his wife, Kartari Chand, 103, from Bradford, West Yorkshire (originally from India), celebrated their 90th wedding anniversary, becoming the world’s longest-betrothed couple.

In America, John and Ann Betar, ages 104 and 100, respectively, have been married 83 years as of 2016. The couple eloped in 1932. They have been named one of America’s longest-married couples by the Worldwide Marriage Encounter.

Pa l - O - M i n e Equestrian is a comprehensive therapeutic equine program that uses horses to facilitate growth, learning and healing for individuals with disabilities and for other vulnerable populations that was founded by Lisa Gatti.

Located at 829 Old Nichols Road in Islandia, Pal-O-Mine grew from having two programs, eight horses and 80 students per week to 11 programs, 25 horses and 400 students per week. This organization sits on eight acres, with a 20-stall barn, handicapped accessible bathrooms, a new 100’ x 120’ indoor arena with stateof-the-art footing and a rider hoisting system, and three outdoor riding arenas.

Individuals of all ages are welcome to take part in the programs they offer. They operate with five full-time employees, 35 independent contractors and 80 volunteers a week. Their riding instructors have experience with the following diagnoses: Autism Spectrum Disorders, Anxiety Disorders, Sensory Processing Disorder, Attention Deficit Disorder, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Neurological Disorders, Cerebral Palsy, Traumatic Brain Injury, Multiple Sclerosis, Down Syndrome, Spina Bifida, Genetic Disorders and Emotional Disturbances.They also offer group programs, individual lessons, corporate workshops and a program specifically designed for military members.

Pal-O-Mine wants you to know just how they can help those who have served in our military, along with those who are still serving our nation.

For more than four thousand years, horses have been an integral part of warfare.

Today, horses are still playing an important role in war, this time in the recovery of military veterans who have suffered emotional and/ or physical injuries. Pal-O-Mine Equestrian is an EAGALA Designed Military Program.This designation asserts that EAGALA Certified Professionals working with the military have specialized training and experience in the military community. Sessions at the farm are action, not talk and they offer individual, group and family sessions.

Pal-O-Mine offers programs to Verterans from Vietnam, Gulf War, Iraq and Afghanistan and for Service men and women who fought in Operation Iraqi Freedom,

Operation New Dawn, Operation Enduring Freedom and for Active Duty Service Members.

It’s not always easy to ask for help, but the benefits of doing so outweigh the fear. One military member who received help from this organizaiton mentioned the following, “For someone in the military like me, it’s hard to swallow my pride and ask for help. This was a safe environment to open up in. Sometimes the horses talked for me and helped show me the path to save my marriage.”

Similar to many other organizations, volunteers are the backbone of Pal-O-Mine.

Some ways you may volunteer are: working with children and adults in lessons, working with therapy horses and performing barn chores, fundraising, and helping with property enhancement and landscaping.

Please note, all students, volunteers and staff must complete, sign and submit a Health Screening Questionnaire prior to coming to Pal-O-Mine.

The Long Island Imagine Awards was created as a way to showcase the nonprofit sector and all the good work that it does, as well as provide opportunities for deeper collaboration within the sector. The event acts as an opportunity to meet new people, discover new organizations doing business on Long Island, develop new relationships,\ and learn from the organizations that are being honored.

The nonprofit sector continues to be challenged, with increased demand for services, reductions in government funding, increases in audits and regulations and an uptick in consolidation in the sector. Through it all, the sector continues to persevere, touching all of us and making a difference in each of our lives. It is the nonprofit spirit that is applauded and reward edwith the Imagine Awards.

Long Island based nonprofits will compete against each other in 5 categories, with the winner in each category winning a $5,000 grant!

The Imagine Awards not only provides a $5,000 check to the winner in each category, it provides a professionally developed video to each finalist, it also provides an avenue to collaborate and explore, exposure and recognition to the finalists and the sector, and a night where the light is shine in on the sector to spotlight all the amazing things that are happening in the nonprofit community.

Imagine Awards participants have developed new partnerships and collaborations, made corporate connectios, which has resulted in new board members and contributions, hve gained strategic insight into what other organizations are doing, and have developed new friendships and relationships that have proven essential in the growth and development of their organizations.

There’s still time for your nonprofit to apply! To be eligible, the organization or executive must meet all of the following requirements: 1) Recognized by the IRS as a 501(c)(3) organization.

2) Must significantly service Nassau and/ or Suffolk County communities.

3) Must be innovative in operations, activities, etc.

Red Ribbon Week Across East Islip East Islip students across the district celebrated Red Ribbon Week from Oct. 26 to 30, focusing on making healthy choices, spreading kindness and being good citizens.

Special daily themes included wearing pajamas to show the importance of making good choices the second you wake up; showing off “crazy hair” to let everyone know to use your head to choose your words wisely, do the right thing and be kind; wearing “crazy socks” as a reminder that eating healthy foods is good for you from your head to your toes; wearing school colors to be proud members of a positive East Islip

community; and wearing favorite Halloween colors or outfits while pledging to make good choices.

“It’s always great to join in on activities that promote the spirit of making good decisions and good citizenship,” said John F. Kennedy Elementary School Principal Deborah Smith.

In prior years, representatives from East Islip High School’s Students Against Destructive Decisions club visited fifth grade classes at JFK and Ruth C. Kinney Elementary School to present for Red Ribbon Week. The high schoolers

were not permitted to visit the elementary schools this year due to COVID-19, so the SADD Club shared a slide presentation with all the fifth grade teachers to show to their classes, which included a video on peer pressure, drug facts, a game and messages to remind students to stay away from drugs.

Islip High School sophomore Lianna Rivera recently won a virtual “America’s Got Muppet Talent” contest sponsored by the Barretta Brothers.

Gene Barretta is a popular children’s book author and illustrator; his brother Bill Barretta is a famous puppeteer known for his work with the Muppets.

The “America’s Got Muppet Talent” finalists performed during the Barretta Brothers’ Oct. 18th vodcast show, with Rivera singing the classic “Rainbow Connection” from the 1979 film “The Muppet Movie.” On their Oct. 22 episode, Rivera was announced as the winner.
