Seventh Annual Power Of Pink Day
Islip’s Commack Road Elementary School held its seventh annual Power of Pink Day on Oct. 21. Students and staff were encouraged to wear something pink that day in support of the Jeanette M. Feminella Memorial Scholarship Fund – a
tribute to the school’s former principal – and the Islip Breast Cancer Coalition.
Throughout the month, Cathy Nieves’ fourthgrade class also sold pink bracelets for $2, pink ribbons to be tied on the school fence for $1, and
personalized pink ribbons for $5. Their efforts raised over $750 for the two charities. The $5 ribbons were displayed in front of the building’s main entrance on Power of Pink Day.

The Charity of the Month for November is Association for Mental Health and Wellness
As home to 72,000 military veterans, Suffolk County has more veterans than any of the other 61 counties in New York State. With Veterans Day occurring in November, this month is a fitting time to recognize local organizations that serve the veterans community, such as our Charity of the Month, the Association for Mental Health and Wellness (MHAW).
MHAW offers a wide spectrum of assistance to Suffolk County veterans in respect to affordable housing, medical and mental health assistance, peer support, and other services. This column focuses on MHAW’s permanent housing for veterans with support services.
In October of 2021, MHAW celebrated the opening of three new homes, adding to their capacity to offer permanent residences for formerly homeless veterans. The three houses became available through Suffolk County’s “Housing Our Homeless Heroes Act” where abandoned properties are transferred to non-profit organizations that serve at-risk and homeless veterans. The initiative is funded through New York State’s Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance’s “Homeless Housing and Assistance Program.”
Ashanta Murray, a Navy veteran of eight years with three young children, is now living in one of the homes. “I was so proud to serve in the Navy – and to come home and try to find housing was such a struggle,” Ms. Murray said. “To serve your country and come home to face homelessness should never happen. This home for me and my children has been such a blessing.”
Aside from a new home, veterans receive such support services as employment and training opportunities, counseling, peer support, independent living skills training, linkage to primary healthcare, substance use disorder treatment, mental healthcare, childcare and other benefits.
The goal of this kind of permanent housing and support services is to prevent
chronic illness, promote a healthy and safe environment, promote wellbeing, prevent mental health and substance use disorders and
to help veterans continue to live in their communities in a manner consistent with their abilities and goals. MHAW aims to purchase and rehab additional homes in the future.
“We owe our veterans deep gratitude and must ensure that they have the opportunity to thrive,” said Colleen Merlo, CEO of MHAW. “They cannot do that without safe and consistent housing. It is an honor to be part of this program.”
For several years, MHAW focused its attention on offering temporary housing for homeless veterans at a shelter in Yaphank. Through the efforts of MHAW along with community and government partners, Long Island has made significant strides in addressing homelessness among veterans in recent years. “We have reached a point where when a veteran is homeless, they do not remain homeless for very long,” said Ms. Merlo. “We are proud to have helped to support this trend through our affordable and permanent housing work as well as our focus on employment opportunities and support services to veterans and their families.”

Islip Honors Board Of Education
The Islip School District celebrated School Board Recognition Week at the board of education’s Oct. 25 meeting, honoring the board members for their dedication to Islip’s students and school community.
Director of Fine and Performing Arts Michael Hershkowitz worked with the district’s art teachers to create letter templates for each Islip student to mark or sign in some way as a representation of their gratitude to the board
members for their service. Commack Road Elementary School, Maud S. Sherwood Elementary School and Wing Elementary School each “signed” one letter, while Islip High School and Islip Middle School both signed two. In total, the eight letters spelling out “thank you” contained the mark or signature of nearly every student and administrator in the district. After the signatures were gathered, the letters were placed in frames and presented to the
board trustees by students representing the building responsible for each.
“These students and their classmates are the reasons we volunteer,” board trustee Matthew Clareen said. “It was really exciting,” added board President Philip Dineen. “It really reinforces as a board collectively as a team, the common denominator is that we always want to see students succeed.”

Islip High School Introduces Freshmen To Club Offerings
Islip High School’s Buccaneer University program hosted a Club Fair for freshmen on Oct.
21. Buccaneer University adviser Nicole Hall and Assistant Principal Meghan Stern worked with the school’s Peer Ambassadors to design an event to help match current ninth graders with clubs and activities that may interest them. The Peer Ambassadors created questions for their mentor groups, prompting members of the Class of 2026 to respond to “Would
You Rather?” and “Who is Most Likely To...?” as well as a segment on Islip High School Teacher Trivia.
More than 25 club advisers and their representatives manned tables for the clubs, where interested students could find informational flyers and promotional materials. Peer Ambassadors and their freshmen mentees rotated between the auditorium, where mentors connected with the underclassmen and provided guidance for getting involved based
on their interests, and the cafeteria, where they visited tables for each of the clubs. Each freshman was given a personalized club passport, earning stamps based on meaningful interactions with club representatives.
“The turnout and interest of our students was phenomenal,” Assistant Principal Lisa Ward said. “I’m so very proud of our Buccaneer University mentors. Buccaneer University continues to thrive and has come a long way since its inception.”

Bella Fantauzzi Named National Merit Semifinalist
East Islip High School senior Bella Fantauzzi was recently named a Semifinalist in the 2023 National Merit Scholarship Program. She was recognized for her exceptional academic performance on the 2021 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test during the last school year.
“It was exciting,” Fantauzzi said about learning she had qualified via her guidance ounselor, Christopher Boehler. “The funniest part was that it came right after Mr. Boehler was saying that
scores aren’t what defines you. Standardized test scores aren’t the end all and be all, but I’m really happy about it, and it’s great because it gives me scholarship opportunities.”
Now in its 68th year, the National Merit Scholarship Corporation annually announces the names of approximately 16,000 semifinalists who go on to compete for 7,250 scholarships, totaling more than $28 million. More than 90 percent of those students are expected to earn Finalist standing and approximately
half will win a National Merit Scholarship, earning the title of Merit Scholar.
