A quintessential fall day and community pride provided the backdrop for a successful homecoming weekend for the Islip School District community, held on Oct. 23. Students from all of the district’s schools met at Town Hall to line up for the parade down Main Street that included high school floats, organization and school banners, cheerleaders, the marching band and more as residents cheered from the sidewalk. This year’s float theme was Holidays, with

creations centered around Christmas (seniors), Halloween (Juniors), July 4 (sophomores) and Valentine’s Day (freshman). After the parade, the community gathered at the Islip High School soccer field to participate in a district-sponsored carnival. The fun-filled event included a dunking platform, information booths, bounce houses and slides, a dance section and games. During the game’s halftime show, the cheerleaders, kickline team and marching band

Islip Buccaneers Celebrate Homecoming gave flawless performances and motivated the already upbeat fans. The homecoming court was also announced and included King Richie Castronova, Queen Desiree Pagan, Stephanie Castro, Bipro Dhar, Brianna Dodier, Nate Moran, Emma Neri, Jameson Seegar, Noah Whitehouse and Abby Zimmerman. About once a week I had to explain that Americans come from diverse backgrounds, and that I was just as much an American as any other Peace Corps volunteer,” says Neng Lee, a first-generation HmongAmerican who served as a health volunteer in the Kyrgyz Republic (Kyrgyzstan) from 2015 to 2017, and as a youth development volunteer from 2017 to 2019. Valuable Assets In other cases, a diverse background can be an advantage. “Integrating into Jamaican culture was easy due to the many similarities with my Mexican culture,” says Maria Elena Venegas Banulelos, a Spanish speaking, MexicanAmerican Peace Corps volunteer who served in Jamaica. “For instance, both Mexicans and Jamaicans are very religious, we enjoy a little spice in our food, and like to dress our best when in public. Both cultures love soccer, dancing and loud music. Also, the environments are similar in the structure of the homes and agricultural products, and both are home to the most humble people.” This sentiment is shared by other volunteers as well. “My color and my accent have not affected my volunteer work negatively,

instead this has allowed me to integrate well in my community, and people even call me ‘African,’” says Aboubakar Bodi, who was born in Togo and served in Jamaica. Bringing Skills Home Peace Corps service can be an emotionally rewarding experience and an effective way to develop the skills needed to make a difference in one’s community back home. It can also be a key stepping stone in one’s career. Volunteers serve for 27 months in education, health, agriculture and other sectors, and upon their return, they are able to usher innovative solutions to collective problems in U.S. communities. “I am very proud of having taught CPR and first aid to people in different villages in the Kyrgyz language. ‘You Call The Shots’ - United Way Of Long Island Receives Grant From CDC Foundation

United Way of Long Island is being funded to support effective community outreach centered on communities of Black, Indigenous and People of Color (BIPOC) in order to share accurate, culturally appropriate information about the COVID-19 and influenza vaccines as well as link adults to vaccine services. United Way, with funding through the CDC Foundation, will work to increase local COVID-19 vaccination rates through the initiative You Call the Shots—Protecting Communities, Empowering Families and Stopping Myths. United Way’s program addresses the inequities in vaccination coverage that exist across different racial and ethnic populations on Long Island by improving access and raising knowledge through educational campaigns to decrease hesitancy and overcome refusal to vaccinate. Nassau and Suffolk Counties have been heavily impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic with over 374,000 cases and 6,452 deaths, and residents continue to suffer the consequences: severe illness, job loss, decrease in income, unstable housing, separation and isolation. These numbers, in combination with vaccine data, illustrate the critical need for increased vaccine coverage. Compared to the overall Long Island population, vaccination rates differ greatly among African Americans and Latinos: 6.4% of African Americans and 12.6% of Latinos have received at least one dose. The CDC Foundation helps the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) save and improve lives by unleashing the power of collaboration between CDC, philanthropies, corporations, organizations and individuals to protect the health, safety and security of America and the world. Since January 2020, the CDC Foundation through the support of its donors has addressed

a wide variety of critical needs during the COVID-19 pandemic. This work includes providing personal protective equipment for frontline responders; care kits for schools, jails and the unhoused; studies examining the impact of COVID-19; work to strengthen communities and community-based organizations to improve vaccination uptake and address misinformation; projects focused on health more than 100 projects focused on health equity; and much more. United Way of Long Island’s You Call the Shots will focus its work in six communities designated by New York State as high priority for increasing vaccination rates: Elmont, Hempstead, Freeport, Huntington Station, Brentwood and Bay Shore. The organization will utliize its existing partnerships with corporate entities, government, labor, community leaders, school systems, health providers and over 100 funded communitybased agencies to increase vaccine confidence and uptake through: Bilingual community navigators who will connect Long Islanders to vaccination sites and providers. They will visit and speak with residents about the importance and safety of vaccines, while providing information on vaccination sites and availability. Navigators will work with state and local health departments to ensure pop-up clinics are located in areas where and when needed, as well as schedule appointments, arrange transportation when necessary, and provide facts about COVID-19 and

the vaccine in multiple languages. Leveraging trusted community-level spokespersons to provide consistent, factual and compelling science-based messages in support of vaccination. Spokespersons will be trained on COVID-19 facts and equipped with compelling scientific information to engage with residents and diseminate information through local media outlets, social media, faith-based venues, community events and other community-based, culturally appropriate venues. Building trust with community members to address the concerns people have about COVID-19. To increase confidence in and encourage vaccination, United Way of Long Island spokespersons and health care partners will help combat misinformation, stop myths and build public trust through community outreach and education forums. Funding for this effort is made possible through a subaward from the CDC Foundation and is part of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) financial assistance award totaling $25,660,048 with 100 percent funding from CDC/HHS. East Islip Celebrates Return Of Homecoming With All-Day Festivities

East Islip enjoyed an allday celebration of school and community pride on Oct. 8, featuring its first high school pep rally and homecoming events since the fall of 2019. The week leading up to homecoming was spent showing off EI Pride as students and staff dressed up each day of Spirit Week, earning points to win the coveted Class Cup, a yearlong competition between the classes. On homecoming morning, the pep rally was held outside this year at Sal Ciampi Field at Boomer Esiason Stadium. The school’s varsity and JV teams were introduced and senior athletes and band members recognized. Students enjoyed “Minute to Win It” games run by the class councils and student government, including sack races and a tug of war. In light of uncertainty regarding mandates, a traditional parade through the community was not planned. However, student

government organized a mini-parade at the end of the afternoon. The march through the school campus was led by the pep band, followed by varsity, JV, East Islip Middle School, and East Islip Competition cheerleaders; several high school clubs; the PTSA; class councils, and Pee Wee football players. The parade ended on the field behind the stadium, where the community had the chance to sample five different food trucks before and during the big game. Just before dusk fell, the undefeated varsity football team took the field, bearing American flags as well as the names of the 13 U.S. military personnel killed in Afghanistan on Aug. 26 on their helmets. Once the game against Half Hollow Hills West began, East Islip took charge, racking up the touchdowns en route to a commanding 42-7 victory. Quarterback Derek Burrell completed six of eight passes for 101 yards

and a touchdown while running for 65 yards and two touchdowns, while Leo Lopez ran for 51 yards and two touchdowns. Other notable efforts included an interception for Aiden Lenox and a sack by Cooper Parkinson. During halftime, the school’s royals were announced: freshmen Julianna D’Addario and Vincent Abbatiello, sophomores Charlie Heffernan and Mary Ranzie, juniors Riley Kramer and Muhammed Abdullah, and seniors Bill Ahmad and Jenna Scandale. “The week was a huge success,” student government advisers Kate Boucher and Bridget Lopiccolo said. “Everyone enjoyed the events and pep rally. We have many great ideas planned and are looking forward to a spring pep rally to celebrate the senior athletes who participate in winter and spring sports.”

How To Help Veterans In Need

Millions of men and women serve in the military and make the sacrifices that such service requires. Risking their lives to serve their countries, veterans sometimes endure mental and physical trauma, returning home to face uphill battles as they deal with their injuries. Many veterans in need are not just in need of medical attention. Learning that their efforts and sacrifices are recognized and appreciated by the ordinary citizens they protect can make a world of difference to veterans as they recover from their injuries. Men, women and children who want to help veterans in need can do so in various ways. • Visit a veterans hospital. Contact a local veterans’

hospital to inquire about their volunteer programs. The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs notes that each year more than 75,000 volunteers spend more than 11 million hours in service to America’s veterans. Visiting veterans at the hospital to hear their stories can lift their spirits and aid in their recoveries. In addition, veterans’ hospitals may have volunteer opportunities that make it easier for hospitals to operate at optimal capacity. • Help a neighbor. Unfortunately, many veterans return home with injuries that affect their ability to make it through a typical day without assistance. Disabled veterans may be unable to do their own grocery

shopping or maintain their homes. If a neighbor or nearby veteran is facing such hurdles, offer to do his or her shopping or mow his or her lawn. Such tasks won’t take much time but can make a world of difference to veterans. • Offer professional services free of charge. Professionals who want to help veterans can offer their services free of charge. Accountants can offer to prepare veterans’ tax returns for free, while attorneys can provide legal advice to veterans who need it. Contractors can help disabled veterans by offering to make alterations to their homes for free or at cost. • Employ social media to help local veterans. Many people who want to help local veterans might not be able to do so more than one day per week. But some veterans may require daily assistance. Men and women can start a locallybased Facebook group for fellow members of their community who want to pitch in to help local veterans. Such a group can make it easier to share information and arrange help for veterans in need. Many veterans return home from serving overseas in need of help. Offering such help can improve veterans’ lives while letting them know their efforts and sacrifices are appreciated.

Connecting Military Parents And Children, One Story At A Time (StatePoint) For deployed service members who are also parents, being away from their kids is often the hardest part of the job. This is why the United Service Organizations (USO) has prioritized connecting military parents with their families. One way to bring service members a reminder of home is through USO entertainment tours, the most famous tour veteran, of course, being legendary comedian Bob Hope. Hope’s legacy of service lives on today through the Bob Hope Legacy Reading Program. Bringing story time ondemand around the globe, the program connected more than 39,000 military families around the world through reading in 2019 alone. Service members

visit participating USO locations, record themselves reading their child’s favorite story and the USO ships that recording and book home to loved ones. Likewise, military kids can record themselves reading a book and share the story time memories with their parents serving overseas. Additionally, local USO reading events encourage kids to use their creativity and complete a craft that complements a story’s theme. When the COVID-19 pandemic hit and many locations had to temporarily shut their doors, this did not deter USO volunteers and staff from finding innovative ways to continue their efforts safely. USO Erbil in Iraq put their ingenuity to work and outfitted the

back of a pickup truck with a makeshift trifold to serve as a reading “room.” They then decorated the inside of the room and packed up a box of books, some props and a chair. The USO team drove the truck all around base, stopping outside popular locations as well as remote areas to reach as many service members as possible with their new, unofficial “Bob Hope on the Road” reading room. To learn about how you can help connect military families through reading, visit uso.org/programs. Parents universally know the draw of reading “one more book” to a pleading little one at bedtime. The Bob Hope Legacy Reading Program gives that opportunity back to deployed parents.
