Islip Honors 2023 Hall Of Fame Inductees

Islip High School honored its 2023 Hall of Fame inductees on Oct. 14. Assistant Principal Meghan Stern and teacher and Hall of Fame Committee member Renee Clock unveiled the newest plaques in the school’s main lobby with the honorees and their families in attendance. The celebrants then adjourned to Marconi Manor for the formal induction ceremony. This year’s honorees were former Islip School District librarian Ginger Michelini Carls, Class of 1958 graduate John Eden, Class of 1965 graduate John Monteleone, former Islip High School football and wrestling coach Joseph Patrovich, and the 55 members of the Islip High School 2004-2005 varsity wrestling team. Carls, who spent 35 years working as a librarian at Commack Road Elementary School and Islip High School, also coached track, formed the

inaugural girls soccer team, and established the Michael Michelini 5K and Michael Michelini Memorial Scholarship. Eden, who played baseball, basketball and soccer during his high school career, earned All-State honors twice and was named an AllAmerican in his senior year. He later became the physical education coordinator for the Babylon School District, earning 371 wins as a coach from 1963-1989 as well as league, section and national Coach of the Year honors. Monteleone, who played in Islip’s jazz band, became an acclaimed luthier of jazz guitars, earning accolades from renowned musicians. His work is currently exhibited at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and is the subject of the recent “The Chisels Are Calling” documentary. Patrovich, who earned Coach of the Year and Regional Coach of the Year

honors, was inducted into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame in 2012. His wrestling program at Islip produced nine state champions, nine All-Americans and a New York State Tournament championship. Coached by Patrovich, the 2004-2005 wrestling team was ranked No. 1 in New York State and Long Island, named Suffolk County champions and earned the League V Dual Meet and Long Island Challenge titles. Individually, the team placed 12 wrestlers in the county tournament and boasted multiple league champions, four county champions and three state champions. “The people here represent and reflect the pride, tradition and strength of Islip, not only the school district, but the community,” Superintendent Dr. Dennis O’Hara said. “Congratulations to all of the honorees.”

Month, an awareness campaign founded by PACER’s National Bullying Prevention Center in 2006. “It was great to see Sherwood come together to celebrate kindness, acceptance and inclusion

within our whole school community of students, teachers, staff and parents; all sharing a visible message that no one should ever experience bullying,” school counselor Kate Kiesling said.

Bethpage Turkey Drive – The Largest Food Drive On Long Island – Aims To Collect 4,000 Turkeys And 40,000 Pounds Of Food On Friday, November 17

The Bethpage Turkey Drive to benefit the Island Harvest Food Bank will take place on Friday, November 17, 2023, from 7:30 AM to 6:00 PM at Bethpage’s headquarters located at 899 South Oyster Bay Road in Bethpage. This year marks the 15th anniversary of Long Island’s largest oneday food drive which to date, has donated more than 45,000 turkeys and over 200,000 pounds of food over 15 years to Island Harvest which helps supply Thanksgiving holiday meals to families in our community. Long Islanders are asked to donate frozen turkeys, non-perishable food items or cash donations. Bethpage’s Drive Through Donation Lanes will allow residents to remain in their cars while volunteers remove donations from the vehicles. The donations will go directly to Island Harvest Food Bank, which will help supply Thanksgiving meals to the more than 300,000 foodinsecure Long Islanders through its distribution network of over 400 food pantries, soup kitchens, and other feeding programs on Long Island. Non-perishable food items needed include canned goods, cereal, pasta, rice, boxed juices, and shelfstable milk (please, no glass containers). For the first time, Bethpage is issuing a Corporate Challenge encouraging local businesses and organizations to donate the largest amount of frozen turkeys and nonperishables and then drop off their donations on November 17. The business that provides the largest donation will be

sent an ice cream truck to their location for all employees to enjoy. To join the challenge, Long Island businesses and organizations can sign up here. “Bethpage is focused on enriching the lives of the communities we serve and we are able to accomplish this by collaborating and partnering with businesses across Long Island. So this year, we are very excited to see the impact the new Corporate Challenge brings to this important event,” said Linda Armyn, President and CEO, Bethpage Federal Credit Union. “As always, our heartfelt thanks go out to the Long Island community for its ongoing support. Every donation counts.” For those unable to make a donation on November 17, or would rather show their support online, Bethpage is accepting online monetary donations. Since the first Bethpage Turkey Drive was organized in 2008, hundreds of community volunteers have come out to assist in the collection of more than 45,000 turkeys and over 200,000 pounds of food, which were then given to Long Island families facing hardship in time for the holidays. Island Harvest Food Bank has seen an increase in the requests for food and support services among the 400 community-based agencies it serves. About 70,000 individuals receive food assistance from the Island Harvest Food Bank network each week. Islip’s Commack Road Elementary School held its eighth annual Power of Pink Day on Oct. 20, showing support for

breast cancer awareness. Staff wore Power of Pink shirts, and the main entrance was lined with pink ribbons honoring

those that have been affected by the disease. Throughout the month, students in Meghan Flynn and Catherine

Nieves’ fourth grade class have participated by selling pink bracelets, pink pens and ribbons to raise money for the Islip

Breast Cancer Coalition as well as the Jeannette Feminella Scholarship Fund. “Our goal was to beat

last year’s total of $1,050, and as of now, we have raised $2,400,” Nieves said.

United Way Of Long Island Invests In Student Success can be a significant burden. United Way of Long Island’s 2023 “Stuff-A-Bus” program provided over 5,000 backpacks filled with school supplies for kindergarten through 5th grade students across Nassau and Suffolk counties. Corporate partners and community members dropped off donated school supplies at United Way’s Entenmann’s Family Center for Hope in Deer Park, NY. Volunteers came together to pack the supplies and load school buses so that no child would start the school year without the basics. According to Neisah, a sixth grader who helped unpack much needed supplies at her school, “It feels amazing to help all these students. It feels great and our community, our school, is all about kindness.” Education is essential to unlocking a student’s potential and achieving financial success. According to the National Autism Association, autism is a bio-neurological developmental disability that affects the normal development of the brain in various areas. Those areas include social interaction, communication skills and cognitive function. Autism generally appears before a child reaches his or her third birthday, and the NAA notes it is diagnosed four times as often in boys than it is in girls. Roughly 40 percent of children with autism do not speak, but parents whose children speak between the ages of

12 and 18 months should know that such youngsters can still ultimately be diagnosed with autism. In such instances, the NAA notes that children lose the words they previously learned. Incidences of autism appear to be on the rise, though the reasons for that remain unclear. According to a report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the prevalence of autism had risen to one in every 59 children by 2018. That’s twice as great as the rate in 2004, when the CDC reported one in 125 children were diagnosed with autism.

How Does Voting-By-Mail Work? Each Election Day, Americans vote and thus participate in a fundamental principle of democracy. Elections take place on various levels, from local governments to presidential elections. Until recently, to cast a ballot for a particular election, most voters had to physically appear at their respective polling locations and submit their votes in person. Mailin voting, also known as absentee voting, was frowned upon and not widely available. It first arose during the Civil War, when soldiers were allowed to cast ballots from the battlefield. Absentee voting later became an issue during World War II, when Congress passed laws in 1942 and 1944 enabling soldiers stationed overseas to participate in elections. More recently, during the 1980s, more

states made absentee voting available, and it is no longer uncommon for voters to be mailed ballots and submit them before Election Day. According to MIT, the movement to vote by mail reached new levels with the 2020 elections, which occurred during the COVID-19 pandemic. Some attest that mailin-voting enables many individuals who would not normally be able to physically make it to the polls on Election Day to cast votes. Mailin balloting works in different ways. The United States has universal voteby-mail and absentee balloting. With the former, ballots are mailed to all voters. In the latter, voters must request an absentee ballot. In terms of a requested absentee ballot, a voter must write, call, or request a ballot online. Upon

receipt, the voter will make his or her choice, and then place the sealed ballot in a security envelope provided with the ballot. The voter signs the outside of the second envelope to certify that he or she is a registered voter. When the election authority receives the ballot, it certifies the registration of the voter and that the address matches the one on record with the election authority. On Election Day, the mail ballots are added to the results of the votes with those from people who visited the polls in person. According to the Brookings Institution, a nonprofit organization based in Washington, D.C. that works to improve policy and governance at local, national, and global levels, there is no partisan advantage to either party related to voting by mail. Also, absentee ballots

benefit senior citizens, low-income people, and those without access to transportation. Despite some news stories in recent years that may lead people to

believe mail-in votes come with risk, the Brennan Center for Justice at New York University says there is no evidence that mail balloting increases electoral fraud, as several

anti-fraud protections are built into the process. Mail-in voting is an option for many people across the U.S. It is secure and convenient for many voters.
