Conflict in the Democratic Republic of the Congo forced Lydia to seek asylum in the U.S., leaving
her far away from her family and with a heavy heart. With the help of the Red Cross, Lydia located her daughter and sent her a message through the Restoring Family Links (RFL) program. Odette responded to her mom— she was indeed alive. “I don’t know how the Red Cross managed to connect me with someone who I thought was dead. There was no other way for me
to talk to her. There was no other way.” • Conflict in Burundi forced Fidele to flee and lose touch with his loved ones, including his father. After living in Tucson, Arizona, for some time, he connected with the Red Cross RFL program to open up a search for his father to help give him peace of mind. After months of searching, Fidele finally received the

HUNDREDS TURN OUT - More than 350 runners and walkers took to the streets of Islip for a 5 Mile Run/5K Walk to raise money for the Islip Breast Cancer Coalition. Islip Supervisor Angie Carpenter emceed the award ceremony, which included presenting a 1st Place Overall Medal to Town employee Mark Chasanoff, as well as to medal winner Town Councilwoman Mary Kate Mullen, the first female to cross the finish line. The event was sponsored by “Hope Runs Here,” and hosted by the Town of Islip and the Islip Breast Cancer Coalition. Over 75 volunteers turned out to ensure the event ran smoothly. “Today’s run/walk enables the Islip Breast Cancer Coalition to continue to provide the valuable support and outreach to those whose lives have been affected by breast cancer,” said Islip Supervisor Angie Carpenter.

UNVEILING NEW CANCER CENTER - Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center officials celebrated the opening of a comprehensive cancer center with a ribboncutting ceremony recently. Islip Supervisor Angie Carpenter joined with fellow local officials, hospital administrators, doctors, surgeons and volunteers, to welcome the new center to the community. “We are truly fortunate to have a world-class cancer center right here in the Town of Islip. This new center will afford patients exceptional quality of care,” said Islip Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter. The new center offers mental health, dietary, genetic counseling, social work and nutrition services. Patient navigators will assist with scheduling appointments and coordinating care.

The Charity of the Month for October is: The Cemetery of Lost Souls (lostsoulsli.com) Benefitting Melissa’s Wish The Cemetery of Lost Souls is a grass roots organization that gears up each year to create an elaborate Haunted House on the founder’s property, located at 350 Broadway in Massapequa Park. E v e r y bit of money raised through their annual event (admission, donations, sponsorships, etc.) is given to a chosen charity. They have raised a lot of money over the years in donations alone and have donated to charities such as Autism Speaks, The Breast Cancer Research Foundation, Ronald McDonald House Charities and Long Island Cares. This year they will bring the community a new interactive experience with the second Lost Souls Walk-Thru haunt, new rooms, new scares and new thrills! The remaining events will run on October 25-26, 31 and November 1-2 from 7PM-11:30PM. The chosen charity for 2019 is Melissa’s Wish, a non-profit organization founded with the purpose of providing short term, non-medical financial aid in the form of a grant to caregivers who are assisting those afflicted with a serious illness, injury or end of life event. This homegrown haunt has been up and running for a few weeks so far this year and visitors have only good things to say! Below are some recent reviews:

Halt Hazards With These Tips Halloween has become a hugely popular time for fun and festivities, but with it comes the potential for a variety of fire hazards. NFPA offers these tips to stay safe during the spooky season: Costumes: Avoid fabric that billows or trails behind you, as these can easily ignite. If you are making your own costume, avoid loosely woven fabrics like linen and cotton, which can be very flammable. Decorations: Many common decorations like cornstalks, crepe paper, and dried flowers are very flammable. Keep these and similar decorations far away from any open flames or heat sources, like candles, heaters, and light bulbs. Candles: Using candles as decoration can be risky if not done correctly. Keep them in a well- attended area out of the path of potential trick-ortreaters. Remind children of the dangers of open flames, and make sure they are supervised at all times when
candles are lit. Extinguish candles before leaving an area. Jack-O-lanterns: Glow sticks or electric candles are the safest choice when it comes to lighting up your jack-o-lantern, but if you choose to use a real candle, do so with extreme caution. Light a candle inside a jack-olantern using long fireplace matches or a utility lighter, and keep it away from other decorations. Visibility: Give children flashlights or glowsticks for lighting, these can even be incorporated into the costume. If your child has a mask, ensure the eye holes are large enough for them to see clearly. Smoke Alarms: This is a great time to make sure your smoke alarms are functional and up-to-date. Exits: Exits are NOT an appropriate place for decorations. When decorating, ensure that nothing is blocking any escape routes.
TAKING PART IN TOURNAMENT - The Bay Shore Girls Varsity Soccer team played in the New York State Girls Soccer Hall of Fame Tournament earlier this month in Niskayuna, New York. The tournament was played to honor this year’s inductees into the Hall of Fame, including Bay Shore High School graduate Jasmyne Spencer. Jasmyne currently plays professionally for Reign FC in Seattle.

Drug Take Back Day To recognize Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Northwell Health Cancer Institute and Katz Institute for Women’s Health will hold a free education event about prevention, screening and treatment from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, October 24 at the Imbert Cancer Center, 440 East Main Street, Bay Shore. About one in eight women in the United States will develop invasive breast cancer over the course of their lifetime. Breast cancer is a disease all women should monitor their risk for. During the educational event, Northwell’s breast experts will discuss: ·Risk factors for breast cancer; ·Latest diagnostic and treatment options; ·Screening options and guidelines; ·Recent studies about breast cancer prevention. Northwell’s breast
specialists are at the forefront of breast surgery, treatment and prevention. The panel’s physician experts include: Melissa Fanna, MD, breast surgeon; Kenneth Gold, MD, medical oncologist; and Nina Vincoff, MD, breast radiologist. America’s Boating Course Offered ‘Brianna’s Law’ has passed the State of New York Assembly, where the law will require ALL who operate a mechanically propelled vessel on navigable waters, to carry a BOATING SAFETY CERTIFICATE. This law will be implemented in five annual phases beginning January 1, 2020. The required age will change each year and in complete affect for all boaters by January 1, 2024. America’s Boating Course educational topics include: ·Introduction to Boating ·Boating Law ·Boat Safety Equipment ·Safe Boating Navigation ·Boating Problems · Trailering, Storing and Protecting Your boat Many Boat Insurance companies offer discounts on boating insurance to boaters who successfully complete this course. This basic boating knowledge course will give you the education required to obtain a state “Boat Operator Certificate.” This is an eight hour course followed by an exam – all written on a 7th grade reading level. Upon completing the exam at the end of the course, each student will receive a personalized Laminated Sail and Power Boating Certificate. The Power Boating

years ago, we already had the rack system, dumbbells and pin loader machines, but the one thing the fitness center lacked was cardio equipment,” said John Sparacio, Islip’s director of health, physical education and athletics. “It was really just a weight
room, not a real fitness center.” Over the past two years, Sparacio and his team started transitioning in cardio equipment such as treadmills, recumbent bikes, advanced motion trainers, ellipticals and rowing machines. They
