he children of Saint Mary School recently had a visit from the Great River and the East Islip Fire Departments. The children were invited to step into a fire simulation room, practice stop, drop and roll and experience the many functions of an emergency vehicle. They also had the opportunity to practice putting out a fire by using the engine hoses with Senator Boyle. A great time was had by all in attendance.

Habitat for Humanity of Suffolk’s Young Professionals is looking for volunteers between the ages of 21-40 to help with its Halloween build on October 31st in Bellport. This is not your traditional Habitat build, as volunteers can dress up in their most creative costumes, all while working on a family’s forever home. A prize will be awarded to the best costume. Miscellaneous Musings By: Jamie Lynn Ryan It’s been awhile since I’ve thrown together one of my random, rambling columns, touching on this, that and the other thing. Here goes… Baseball in October, that annual celebration of excellence that us Yankees fans have been fortunate to experience, well, annually for the most part. Congratulations to our New York neighbors, the Mets, for holding it together just long enough to make their longsuffering fans believe. Let’s hope the ride continues into the next round; but, either way, a proud showing. Football in October, well, that’s a different story entirely. The season is still

less than halfway over, and up until just a few weeks ago, tailgating could have been comfortably enjoyed in t-shirts and shorts. But no more. Break out the sweaters and scarves, boots and gloves – it’s gonna be a chilly few months ahead. Speaking of, have you made your Christmas shopping lists yet? What are you waiting for? At this rate, the bathing suits for next summer will be out on the racks in a matter of weeks. Forget Autumn – holiday season is upon us, with various countdowns marking the minutes until Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas. {For those inquiring readers, Buddy the Betta, who just celebrated his

eight-month birthday, is eagerly looking forward to his very first holiday season. Perhaps I’ll decorate his tiny plant and string some lights on his bowl. He’s still patiently awaiting his sixmonth birthday shopping spree – something about wanting a “mini-castle” to sleep in. He’s also highly offended that no one noticed his addition to our staff box several weeks ago and is refusing to write another guest column, in protest.} Me, I’m looking forward to my own fall shopping spree. There’s something about the change of seasons and the transition of weather that calls for some new apparel, don’t you think? If only I had room to stuff one more thing in my closet…

All-State Designation Two Islip High School student-musicians have been recognized for their outstanding talent by the New York State School Music Association, and awarded All-State honors. Savannah Beckford was selected for the AllState Mixed Choir, based upon her performance at last year’s NYSSMA Solo Festival, and will perform during the All-State

concerts at the NYSSMA Winter Conference. New York’s eight AllState bands, choruses, orchestras and jazz ensembles are honors groups comprised of the top students from school music departments across the state. At the Winter Conference, held on December 5th and 6th at the Eastman Theater in Rochester, the students

will be perform under the direction of renowned guest conductors. Beckford will prepare for her concert with Dr. Rich Harris Jr., the choral director at Islip High School. In addition, fellow student Larry Saperstein was selected as an alternate for All-State Vocal Jazz Ensemble.

The food for the event was prepared by students from the Culinary Arts and Hospitality Career Academy, who then joined their fellow students at tables, divided into groups of 10, at the district’s Early Childhood Center cafeteria. The high schoolers assisted with the cleanup of Brook Street and the surrounding marsh and woods, removing bottles, cans, e-waste, food containers, wrappers and yard waste. Brook Street is the KIC club’s “adopt-aspot,” and every April, the

students actively work to keep the area free of litter for Earth Day. Due to the buildup of trash over the last five months, students and community leaders determined that a second cleanup was necessary.
