Storm season is here in New York, is your home ready to withstand the elements this year? There are a lot of precautions homeowners can take to make sure their homes are ready to combat the storms that come our way. The most important aspect of your home that you need to check is your roof. Make sure that all shingles and components on your roof are not compromised. This means checking the shingles to see if any are loose or if any are blown off. If you do see that your roof needs work you must get this fixed as soon as possible.

The strong rains and winds from storms will cause leaks in your roof which will lead to the structure of your home rotting and cause leaks that may make their way into your home. The next aspect of your home you should check is your gutters. Make sure they are cleaned, and water is able to fill up and be diverted away from your house. Make sure that the downspouts to your gutters are pointed away from the foundation of your home and are clear for water to flow through easily. If gutters are not able to keep a constant flow of water away from your home the facia that the gutters are attached to will rot and your gutters may fall off due to the excessive water that is filling them and the weakened fascia that is caused by the excessive water damage. Finally, make sure that all of your windows and doors are able to lock & are air-tight so no water is able to infiltrate through these openings. You may also want to check your window wells if you have them. Make sure that the soil is loose and able to absorb water so no flooding can occur. Community Residents Learn About Long Island’s Majestic Trees At World Class Arborteum

Pinelawn Memorial Park and Arboretum, known for its exceptionally beautiful grounds and world-class Arboretum, recently hosted its 5th Annual Arboretum Tour where over 150 guests toured Pinelawn’s magnificent 500-acre Arboretum.

The Arboretum, which was awarded Level II status from the International Arboretum Accreditation Program, ArbNet in 2021, is home to three distinct collections of trees. This includes their Noteworthy Collection, which boasts 10 of its highest priority and valued trees, including a Weeping Beech, its oldest tree at over 120 years old, with a crown size spread of 74 feet, and the Nikko

Maple, its rarest, whose species originated in Japan.

“Long Island tree lovers don’t need to travel far to learn about some of the world’s most beautiful trees,” said said Kristyn Hovanec, Director of Community Outreach, Marketing Manager, Pinelawn Memorial Park and Arboretum. “We hold our Arboretum tours twice a year, but tickets go fast, so we recommend checking the website periodically, for tickets.”

Guided by boardcertified arborist, James Dublar, guests hopped aboard an old-fashioned trolley to receive a guided, educational tour across the grounds, which are intricately and meticulously maintained

daily by a trained, full-time gardening staff. Throughout the tour, guests had the opportunity to exit the trolley and see Pinelawn’s serene landscape and variety of historic trees such as the Copper Beech, Zelkova, and the Kousa Dogwood up-close.

“Our staff takes great pride in maintaining a tranquil environment for families throughout our gardens,” said Kristyn. “Each of our collections play an important role to Long Island’s ecosystem and wildlife and we’re honored to have the opportunity to share our breathtaking contribution to our community’s natural beauty with guests in a meaningful way.”

Islip’s 2022 Hall Of Fame Inductees Recognized

Islip High School recognized the Hall of Fame 2022 inductees during homecoming weekend, beginning with a Sept. 23 induction ceremony at Marconi Manor. This year’s honorees included former Islip High School Athletic Director Robert Jay “Doc” Holliday, who was honored posthumously; alumni Patrick M. Rogers and Christopher Wade; and the 2015 New York State champion varsity girls soccer team.

The ceremony featured an introduction by teacher and Hall of Fame Committee member Renee Clock, as well as comments from Principal Dr. Lara Gonzalez and Assistant Principal Meghan Stern Holliday began his athletics career as East Islip High School’s assistant

football coach, from 19691979. He served as head football coach for Kings Park High School from 1981-1984, then returned to East Islip for the 1985 and 1986 seasons, where his teams won the league championships both years.

Holliday served as Islip’s athletic director from 1991 until his 2002 retirement, passing away in 2018. Chris Clehane, a health teacher at Islip High School, provided the introduction for Holliday’s induction.

Rogers, a member of the Class of 1974, earned All-League honors in both football and wrestling in his senior year at Islip, earned a football MVP award and was a member of the Bucs league champion baseball team. Recruited by Baldwin Wallace University for both football and wrestling, he

played both sports as well as rugby for the school.

Rogers spent 24 years with Toshiba International Corporation, where he managed the company’s Electric Motor Division in Houston. He then joined TECO Westinghouse as a regional manager, eventually becoming the company’s president and growing its sales from $30 to $145 million. Upon his retirement after 17 years, TECO Westinghouse established the annual Pat Rogers Award of Excellence. Islip High School staff member Eileen DeBitetto introduced Rogers’ induction.

Wade, a member of the Class of 2005, was a star wrestler for the Bucs, holding a 123-19 record during five years on the varsity team. During his high school career, he

earned two All-County, four- All-League, two League championships and a League Most Outstanding Wrestler honors. He won the Suffolk County and New York State championships in 2005 in the 140-pound weight class. At the collegiate level, Wade was an All-American, a 2007 National Junior College Athletic Association finalist for Nassau Community College and placed fifth in the NCAA Division III finals for SUNY Oneonta. He became a professional mixed martial artist in 2011, earning a record of 5-0 and later joined the Ultimate Fighting Championship and then the Professional Fighters League, where his current record stands as 22-8. Wade also runs an MMA program for adults and children at a local gym. Wade’s induction was

The 2015 varsity girls soccer team, led by head coach Mike Reilly and assistant coaches Elizabeth Pyz, Megan Schierhorst and Kevin Sheehy, earned the very first New York State championship in the program’s history. Ranked No. 1 in the state, No. 2 in the region and No. 11 in the nation, the Lady Bucs were undefeated league champions, Suffolk County Champions and Long Island Champions. The team included seniors Alexandra Bondi, Daniela D’Acunto, Hannah Flynn, Mary O’Hara, Kamryn Hill, Cassidy Hock, Kerri McDonald, Taylor Pizzimenti, Jessica Rizzo and Perianne Smith; juniors Emma Baumbusch, Gabriella Columbo, Ashley Giorgio, Delaney Kissane, Valentina Lopez, Emma

Rafferty, Lyndsey Sparks and Katie Warnokowski; sophomores Julia DeSantis, Hannah Franco and Kayla Multer; and freshmen Dominique Bono, Julianna Eastwood, Hailey Franco and Alyssa Sparks. Current Director of Health, Physical Education, and Athletics John Sparacio introduce the team’s induction.

The inductees and their family members also marched in the homecoming parade the following afternoon, then proceeded to the high school’s Hall of Fame wall, where the inductees’ plaques were unveiled. They were honored a second time with an introduction at the 50yard line during halftime of the homecoming football game.

PSEG Long Island cautions that metallic balloons can be hazardous

PSEG Long Island is reminding customers that balloons released into the air can become entangled in overhead electric equipment and cause a host of problems.

“Safety is PSEG Long Island’s No. 1 priority. That’s why we’re cautioning customers to please hold onto their metallic balloons,” said John O’Connell,

PSEG Long Island’s vice president of Transmission and Distribution Operations. “Though they’re festive, fun and look nice, we want the public to be aware that metallic balloons also conduct electricity. If they get loose and come into contact with a power line or other electrical equipment, that could lead to power outages,

fire and, possibly, injuries.”

To mitigate these risks, PSEG Long Island encourages the public to follow these safety guidelines:

• Metallic balloons and other decorations should be kept clear of overhead power lines and equipment, and never purposely released into the air.

• All balloons with helium

should be secured to weights that prevent them from floating away.

• To properly dispose of a Mylar balloon, safely puncture it in several places to release the helium, and discard it in the trash.

• NEVER touch a power line. Do not attempt to retrieve a balloon, toy or anything caught in an overhead power line. Report it

by contacting PSEG Long Island at 800-490-0075 so a specially trained crew can safely address the issue.

The Charity of the Month for October is Helen Keller Services

Helen Keller Services (HKS), a nonprofit organization with locations across Long Island and the nation, works with thousands of individuals who are blind, have low vision, are DeafBlind or have combined hearing and vision loss to live, work and thrive in their community of choice.

The Helen Keller National Center (HKNC), which is located in Port Washington, is the only comprehensive national program that provides information, referral, support and training exclusively to youths and adults who have combined vision and hearing loss. The Center also supports the families and professionals who work with the DeafBlind community.

One of the services the organization runs is the HKSB Health and Wellness Program, which provides free physical health activities and mental wellness initiatives to individuals throughout the New York metropolitan area who are blind or DeafBlind. Some of the offerings are individualized and group dance movement therapy, yoga and/or pilates instruction, nutrition education, creative arts therapy, gardening and workshops on various topics related to health and wellness.

“The program offers dance and movement therapy sessions to

promote emotional and psychological release through creative

movement expression,” says Janine Markey, a dance/movement therapist for HKS. “Yoga sessions encourage the use of mindfulness practices. Mental health support groups are facilitated by clinical staff members to provide a safe outlet for the participants thoughts and feelings.”

Don’t forget, this entire month is designated as National Disability Employment Awareness Month, which celebrates the contributions of America’s workers with disabilities past and present and showcases supportive, inclusive employment policies and practices. On The 80th Anniversary Of The Sherman Tank, The Museum Of American Armor Seeks Those Who Crewed These Legendary Vehicles

On the 80th anniversary of the iconic Sherman tank that spearheaded America’s liberation of Europe during World War II, the Museum of American Armor is seeking to honor those veterans who crewed these legendary vehicles along their families.

The Armor Museum has put out an “All Points Bulletin” for Sherman tank families to join the Armor

Museum in observing the milestone anniversary on Thursday, November 10th at 12 Noon, on the eve of Veterans Day 2022.

“Sadly, we recognize that many of the Sherman tank crews are gone but their legacy is lasting. The invitation is out to all surviving Sherman tankers but we are also asking the families of Sherman veterans

to join us in ceremonies that mark the 80th anniversary of when this iconic tank was introduced into combat,” stated Kevin Carroll, the Armor Museum’s Community Affairs Director.

Armor Museum’s founder and president Lawrence Kadish stated, “The Armor Museum continues to offer a powerful presentation that keeps alive the legacy of our

nation’s military and the gift of freedom they have given all of us. The Sherman tank is an important part of that story and so we are asking tanker veterans or their survivors to come forward and help us preserve their legacy.”

In recognition of its considerable importance, the Armor Museum’s acquisition of a Sherman

tank was one of the first actions undertaken by Mr. Kadish when he undertook the creation of the museum.

“You can’t effectively tell the story of American courage during World War II without this particular tank on operational display,” observed Mr. Kadish.

Some 50,000 Sherman tanks were built by nearly a dozen different

manufacturers during World War II, making them available to the Allies as well as American forces fighting in Europe and the Pacific. While not as well armed as its German opponents, the Sherman proved to be reliable, relatively fast, and produced in great numbers.

On the morning of July 17, 2022, firefighters from Islip Terrace Fire Department, Islip Fire Department, and East Islip Fire Department bravely rescued three trapped dogs, two Siberian Huskies and an Alaskan Malamute, and a 19-year-old woman from a house fire in Long Island. Discovering two of the dogs were unconscious and barely breathing, the firefighters immediately began chest compressions and cooled off the dogs with a fire hose. The dramatic rescue was captured on video, inspiring people nationwide. The rescued woman and all three dogs survived their ordeal thanks to these heroic firefighters’ skill and quick thinking. The collaborating departments— who serve more than 14,000 residents combined—acted not only on their duty but also on their deep compassion for people and animals in need.
