Continuing a long tradition of musical excellence, 18 East Islip High School students were chosen to participate in the annual New York State Council of Administrators of Music Education AllCounty concert, which will be held on November 17th at Hauppauge High School. NYSCAME’s All-County program showcases the best junior and senior musicians in

State honors this year by the New York State School Music Association and will perform at the annual AllState Music Conference in Rochester, New York from November 30th to December 3rd. Evan Mauner (trumpet) will perform with the AllState Instrumental Jazz Ensemble, Stewart will perform with the AllState Symphonic Band, O’Neill will perform with the All-State Symphonic Orchestra, Bloom and Rapuzzi will perform with the All-State Treble Chorus, and Anderson and Commisso will perform with the All-State Mixed Chorus. “These achievements are due to these students’ hard work, dedication and perseverance, as well as the support provided by our teachers through our performing music programs,” said Dr. Robert J. Wottawa II, the district’s director of art and music.

One in four women will be the victim of domestic violence at some point in her lifetime and three women are killed every day at the hands of a current or former intimate partner. This October, as we mark National Domestic Violence Awareness Month, Suffolk County Sheriff Vincent F. DeMarco wants domestic violence victims to be aware of two potentially lifesaving victim notification programs offered by the Sheriff’s Office through the New York State Sheriffs’ Institute. The first is the Order of Protection Notification Program, which allows domestic violence victims to register to be notified by phone, text message, or e-mail when a Family Court Order of Protection has been served. This service is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The second is the Prisoner Release Notification Program (powered by VINE®), which allows crime victims to register at www. vinelink.com or toll-free at 1-888-VINE-4-NY to be notified by phone or e-mail in the event of an offender’s release from jail or prison. This service is also available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Sheriff DeMarco urges residents to visit the Sheriff’s Office’s website for more information or to access the automated services at www. suffolksheriff.com.

Priscilla Zarate has been appointed as the new ENL and world language K-12 coordinator for the Islip School District. Prior to this, she had served since 2015 as executive director of the New York City Department of Education’s Division of English Language Learners and Student Support. She previously worked for seven years as assistant coordinator for bilingual and ENL programs at the Brentwood School District; for a year as bilingual, ENL and dual language programs coordinator for the Long Beach School District; and for eight years as bilingual, ENL and dual language coordinator for the Christa McAuliffe School in Jackson Heights, Queens.
A resident of Deer Park, Zarate earned her bachelor’s degree in Spanish literature and elementary education at Hunter College of the City of New York, her master’s degree in bilingual education at Bank Street College, and her school district administrator and school building administrator degrees from the College of Saint Rose. Since 2013, Zarate has been a committee member of the Town of Babylon Department of Human Services’ annual Hispanic Heritage Festival, for which she coordinates children’s programs and activities. In 2013, she was recognized at the festival by the town and Supervisor Rich Schaffer as
a “Hispanic Leader Serving and Guiding Our Nation with Pride and Honor.” That same year, she was honored by State Sen. Phil Boyle at the Hispanic Heritage Awards ceremony in Brentwood. “I believe that every child deserves high quality educational programs that value, respect and represent the cultural diversity and languages students bring into their school communities,” said Zarate. “Every child should be well prepared for a global society by providing them access to educational opportunities where they can become multilingual and multiliterate and extend their horizons to crosscultural understanding and sensibility. My goal is to provide students, parents and teachers with the resources and support they may need to become successful in their school communities, as well as to instill leadership skills in students and encourage parents to take leadership roles in the education of their children. Making the Cut East Islip High School sophomore Alexis Barber participated in the Art League of Long Island’s Summer Portfolio Development program this past summer. Students in the program were challenged to create HISTORICAL SOCIETY EVENTS - On Friday, October 6th, the Historical Society of a cover for Anton Media Islip Hamlet and the Islip Public Library co-hosted “An Evening the John Monteleone.” This multi-media event showcased John’s beautifully crafted mandolin’s and guitars. Barber, who previously won third place in an exhibit at the Long Island Children’s Museum when she was in the eighth grade, is currently taking two honors art classes at the high school.

Eager families converged on East Islip High School’s cafeteria on September 26th for the annual college fair, looking for information and insight from the more than 135 colleges in attendance. At the event, sponsored by the school’s guidance department, parents and students had an opportunity to meet the college representatives, ask questions, discuss the students’ plans for the future and pick up literature and other information that will
help each family decide which college is best for their child. St. Joseph’s College financial expert Gordon Rowe was on hand in the school’s library for two presentations on FAFSA and financial aid, while school counselor Jessica Pignataro discussed NCAA regulations for parents of students planning to play Division I or II college sports. Back in the cafeteria, counselors Chris Boehler and Nicole Vincenti met with parents and reps alike. “As always, the parents
go out of their way to be supportive, and this year they had a chance to meet so many colleges that may be of interest to their child in the future,” said Guidance Director Israel Malinowitzer. “We encourage parents to keep in touch with the college representatives and to schedule a meeting with their counselors as soon as possible if they are in the process of filling out their child’s college application.”
