Far from the average breast cancer foundation, Pink Aid’s mission is to help local underserved women survive treatment on both a financial and emotional level. oblivion of that dreamlike state in which we often begin our day. And, just like that, it’s gone, a mere trace of a concept that could have been. If only I had the good sense to jot down these fleeting thoughts. Instead, I sit here blank, staring at aforementioned blank page, feeling a sort of camaraderie with it. What shall we accomplish today? Do I sense a metaphor here, a comparison to each brand new day we are afforded, that 24hour stretch of limitless possibilities for adventure and accomplishment? Too easy. And yet, clearly not
simple enough for the average individual to take advantage of, yet another peculiarity of mankind. So many opportunities … so many fresh starts… so many blank pages…. Who’s to say when the moment will be seized, a la Dead Poets Society’s “carpe diem” mantra? Well, that’s a simple enough question. You. You are to say. I am to say. We are to say. The next time you are presented with a blank page, grab a pen and start writing. Or at least have the good sense to keep a notepad handy when you wake up.

East Islip High School varsity football coach Sal Ciampi Jr. reached a very special milestone, earning his 100th career coaching victory. The magic number came with a 21-6 win on September 18th over host Islip, with his father, legendary East Islip football coach Sal Ciampi, watching from
the sidelines. The Ciampis are now the only father and son in Suffolk County football history to both win 100 games. “It was great to do it with my father there, and be the only father and son combo, as well as the youngest person to reach 100 wins,” said Ciampi. “It felt good to reach an accomplishment like that.”
Ciampi had not given the pending achievement much thought until media brought it to his attention. “When you start reaching milestones like this, you feel old, but reaching milestones isn’t why I took this job,” he said. “I still enjoy being around kids and pushing them to achieve things they thought they couldn’t.” Junior lineman Kyle Nunez said, “I think Coach Ciampi absolutely deserves it. He works harder than most coaches on Long Island. Work Ethic Earns Honors A total of seven stellar students from East Islip High School – seniors Meaghan Coles, Emily Fishman, Harrison Gieraltowski, Julia Rizzo, Joseph Teknus and Kyra Walls, and junior Isabella Pizzuto – were named AP Scholars with Distinction for 2015 by the College Board, along with 16 graduates from the Class of 2015. To be recognized as an AP Scholar with Distinction, students must receive an average score of at least 3.5 on their exams and scores of 3 or higher on five or more of these exams. One student from last year’s graduating class, Lauren Farrell, was also named a 2015 National AP Scholar, the highest level of achievement, requiring an average score of at least 4 on all AP exams taken
and scores of 4 or higher on eight or more of these exams. The College Board’s Advanced Placement Program recognizes several different award levels for outstanding college-level student academic achievement, displayed via AP courses and exams. The exams are graded on a scale of 1 to 5, with a score of 3 or higher qualifying students for college credit. A total of 69 East Islip students were AP Scholars for 2015. Ten students were named 2015 AP Scholars with Honor, including current seniors Nicholas Carney, Melissa Hasse, Therese Mittleman, Shannon Ransom and Will Reed, as well as five graduates. For this level, the average score needed is 3.25 on all exams and 3 or higher on four or more of those exams.
A total of 36 students earned recognition as AP Scholars, receiving scores of 3 or higher on three or more exams, including current seniors Sarah Commisso, Santino Dunham, Ashley Karlin, James Kelly, Faith Kern, Asma Malik, Brianna Maye, Dennis McCann, Karli Pipitone, Caleb Shulman, Ryan Smith, Charlie Tarazona and Megan Tohill, along with 23 graduates. “All of these successful students should be praised for their superior work ethic over the course of their high school careers,” said Israel Malinowitzer, director of guidance. All levels of AP Scholars at East Islip received award certificates, and their achievements will be listed in the AP score reports sent to colleges.

was called to duty and had to respond to an immediate crisis at Benji Beach. While observing a man in the water with his grandchildren, she noticed him collapse. A team of 10 lifeguards, including Tedesco, jumped into the water and pulled the man
out. They tried to revive him with an AED machine, but it proved ineffective, and the lifeguards began doing CPR and administering oxygen. Emergency medical technicians arrived, stabilizing the man’s neck and connecting him to an IV unit. On her last day of summer work, Tedesco and her fellow lifeguards were paid a surprise visit by the man they had helped, who thanked each of them for saving his life. On September 8th, she received a certificate of recognition from the Islip Town Board. The event provided inspiring, and Tedesco, now attending East Islip’s Medical and Health Technology Career Academy, plans to pursue a career in the medical field. “Phoebe was very proud to have been there that day,” said Career Academy Director Israel Malinowitzer. The smell of fall is in the air and Halloween is right around the corner, leaving thrill-seekers tingling in anticipation for the 27th annual Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck Spooky Walk, hosted by the Moriches Paquatuck Squaws. Visitors will be chilled to the bones with this horrifying event, as they encounter surprises around every corner. This year’s Spooky Walk is sponsored by Capitol One Bank and will take place on October 16th-17th and 23rd-24th at Camp PaQua-Tuck from 7 to 9 p.m. The entire Spooky Walk trail takes 45 minutes to complete, making it the longest-lasting haunted walk on Long Island. This year’s theme features pirates and a haunted mansion. The trails takes guests through four buildings around the campgrounds, and on a walk through the woods and along Kaler’s Pond, where the angry ghosts of double-crossed pirates are rumored to live. A bypass route is available for guests who wish to exit before the end. There will also be a variety of refreshments at the event, including hamburgers, hot dogs, roasted corn, candy apples and hot pretzels. Admission to the event is $15 per person, with all of the proceeds benefitting the camp’s mission to provide a safe and funfilled environment for children and young adults with special needs during their summer and fall respite sessions. Thanks to thousands of participants, donors and guests, this event has raised $2.2 million for the camp since its first year in 1989. “Beware: the Spooky Walk is definitely not for the faint of heart,” says Marcella Weiss, member of the Moriches Paquatuck Squaws and coordinator of the Spooky Walk. “You never know what is going to chase you, or will just stay in place.
