Fire Prevention Week The Firemen’s Association of the State of New York (FASNY) is clanging the alarm with the message, “Don’t wait – check the date!” - the 2016 theme of the annual Fire Prevention Week, October 9th through 15th - promoting the importance of replacing smoke alarms every 10 years.

“Functioning smoke alarms reduce by half the

risk of dying in a home fire, so it is extremely important to make sure they’re working properly”, said FASNY President Kenneth Pienkowski.

President Pienkowski noted that families utilizing a 10-year-life smoke alarm in the home can remove a potentially high-danger component of human error from the reliability of alarms.

Feastival Raises Funds The Fuoco family, alongside The Rotary Club of Patchogue, hosted the 47th annual Fuoco Memorial Golf Feastival at Bellport Country Club on Thursday, September 15th. Funds raised from the tournament and dinner will benefit Camp Pa-QuaTuck, a year-long respite for children and young adults with physical and mental disabilities. More than $1.4 million has been raised by the Golf Feastival

to support the camp since its inaugural event in 1969.

This year’s Feastival featured 152 golfers at the golf tournament, many of whom golfed together in teams. The consequent cocktail hour, buffet-style Italian dinner, tournament awards, raffle and silent auction was attended by 180 guests.

Participants in the daylong golf outing partook in a variety of “Food Feastivals,” for which the

event is named. Italian “Feastival Stands” lined the course with options such as meatballs and clams, pasta and wine, sausage and peppers, an Italian kitchen and Gourmet Deli, a specialty oyster bar, Zeppolas and Cannolis, gourmet pizza and craft beer. In addition, there were contests for “Longest Drive” or “Closest to the Pin” on every hole.

Signs. They’re everywhere.

You need only to look, and take notice. A visit from a butterfly to commemorate a birthday… the timely appearance of a nest of robin’s eggs… a rainbow arching over the sky…

There are those who simply appreciate these occurrences as a token of nature at its finest and leave it at that. And then there are those who see it as representative of something far deeper, and more spiritual in nature.

Sure, anything can be made to “fit,” if you are so inclined; but there are certain phenomena, if you will, that simply cannot be denied and leave you shaking your head in wonderment.

Case in point: I recently found myself driving on Sunrise Highway, as I often

do, when I happened to focus in on the license plate of the vehicle in front of me. It read “RIP PAL.” For those who may not know, I recently lost my grandfather – my “Pal” – as I fondly called him, earlier this year. The odds of that particular combination of letters, traveling in front of me at that particular time, leading up to what would have been his 90th birthday this month… it was pretty mind blowing at the time.

As soon as I was stationary, I quickly texted my mom to tell her about my encounter, still incredulous at the coincidence. No sooner did I get out of the car to head in to pick up dinner, when I was met with another “sign.”

As I stood on line waiting to be helped, my eyes fell on the nametag of the girl behind the counter, one I had noticed there countless times

before. It read “Ventura” … my grandfather’s last name.

Whether it was her first name, last name, I wasn’t certain.

But it didn’t matter. What are the odds?

Maybe it was just a coincidence. Two, in fact.

Within the space of about five minutes. Both having to do with my grandpa. Perhaps just a stroke of luck. But, to me, it was a sign. Of what, exactly, I don’t know. But these subtle reminders of those who have passed on are around us always, if we only choose to pay attention to them. And I do, always.

They say signs come to those who believe in them, those who are open to accept them for what they are – whether it provides a moment of comfort or brings to mind a happy memory. We can certainly all use more of those. Anxiously awaiting the next one...

Young biologists from Islip High School avidly participated in the third annual Seatuck Birding Challenge on September 24th. Teams of AP biology students combed Long Island’s various ecosystems to identify as many birds as possible in 12 hours to measure the biodiversity of the area’s avian species.

The students’ bird tallies were returned to Seatuck’s Suffolk County Environmental Center in Islip later that evening, where their efforts were recognized by the professional birding community and Seatuck staff following a celebratory dinner catered

Take Heart With Tea An apple a day may keep the doctor away, but a recent study found drinking tea might keep the cardiologist at bay.

The USDA reported that men and women who drank black tea for three weeks reduced their total and bad

cholesterol (LDL) levels by an average of 7.5 percent.

Researchers concluded that drinking tea may reduce the

risk of coronary heart disease.

Antioxidants called flavonoids, found in both green and black teas, are thought to

be potent weapons in the fight against heart disease.

That news may be especially important

for women, given that heart disease kills more women than all forms of cancer combined including breast cancer.

College Choices Representatives from more than 135 colleges flocked to the East Islip High School cafeteria for the annual college fair.

The event, sponsored by the guidance department and held on the evening of September 27th, provided more than 500 members of the school’s families with an opportunity to meet the representatives, ask questions, discuss their children’s plans

for the future and pick up literature and other information that will help them to decide on the right college.

In conjunction with the fair, the school’s library hosted two well-attended financial aid presentations

by Gordon Rowe, a financial expert from St. Joseph’s College, focusing on the new early deadlines for applying for the free application for Federal

Commended Student

Student Aid. Additionally, school counselor Jessica Pignataro offered a presentation on the NCAA for parents of students planning to play Division I or II sports in college.

“Each year our college fair continues to grow, and both parents and students enjoyed coming to this,” said Guidance Director Israel Malinowitzer.

“The evening was a huge success.”

Devin Thelemann, a senior at East Islip High School, has been named a Commended Student by the 2017 National Merit Scholarship Program.

Thelemann, an exceptional student and All-County and LISFA musician on bass, was recognized for his achievement on

the 2015 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. More than 1.6 million students entered the NMS competition; Thelemann and the approximately 34,000 other Commended Students finished among the top 5 percent nationwide.

“Devin is an excellent

student and an accomplished musician in our Symphony Orchestra,” said his school counselor, Jessica Pignataro. “We are so proud of him, not only for receiving this commendation, but for being an outstanding member of the Class of 2017.”

Returning Home

Islip has a familiar face in its new principal of Sherwood Elementary School with the return of Chad Walerstein. The educator was with the district earlier in his career as an assistant principal at Islip Middle School.

Prior to taking the position at Sherwood, replacing Maureen Martin, Walerstein served as an

assistant principal at Eastport-South Manor Junior-Senior High School.

He began his career as an ELA teacher and literacy coach in the William Floyd School District.

Walerstein, a Setauket resident, earned his bachelor’s degree in English and master’s degree in elementary education at Long Island

Director Named

University’s Southampton College. His post-graduate certificate in educational administration was obtained at Stony Brook University. He is currently pursuing a doctorate at LIU Post.

“I am excited to return to Islip as principal at Sherwood,” said Walerstein. “Islip has always felt like a second home to me. I am looking forward to sharing my experiences with the Sherwood family, and I am excited to see and work with old friends, meet new people and embrace the opportunities that lie before us. I will work tirelessly to ensure that Sherwood remains the amazing place it has always been while helping our students learn the skills necessary for success in the 21st century.”

Dr. Aileen O’Rourke, the principal of East Islip’s John F. Kennedy Elementary school for almost a dozen years, is now the director of special education/pupil personnel services and Committee for Special Education for the East Islip School District.

A New York City native and East Islip resident, O’Rourke earned her bachelor’s degree in English and secondary education and master’s

degree in elementary education at the City University of New York at Queens College, a professional diploma in school leadership and administration from CUNY Brooklyn, and her doctorate in 2015 from St. John’s University.

She began her teaching career in 1991 with the New York City Department of Education, and was named an assistant principal at Brooklyn’s P.S.

202 in 1998. After moving to Long Island with her family in 2003, O’Rourke served as an administrator at Washington Drive Primary School in the Harborfields School District before taking over at JFK in 2005.

“It was a privilege to serve as principal at JFK for so many years,” said O’Rourke. “My time there was truly rewarding and I was lucky to have worked with an amazing group of students, staff and parents.

My new position presents a wonderful opportunity to continue to advocate for and support the children of East Islip in a diverse capacity. I eagerly look forward to working with our dedicated team of educators to continue to make East Islip great.”

In an effort to protect its anglers from any potential dangers at sea, Star Island Yacht Club & Marina has rescheduled the Seventh Annual Striped Bass Tournament. The Captain’s Meeting will now be held

on Friday, October 14th and fishing will take place on Saturday, October 15th.

“With the well-known risks associated with the residual hurricane effects in the ocean, we decided that rescheduling this

long-running event is the best way to ensure the safety of all anglers,” says Ben Mahler, General Manager, Star Island Yacht Club & Marina. “We hope that all of our fishermen will still be able to join us

Museum to Be Built Supervisor Angie Carpenter recently joined Senator Tom Croci and other elected officials at a press conference where Senator Croci announced plans to construct a Navy SEAL Museum and United States Naval Sea Cadet Training Facility. The Museum will be named after Suffolk County’s iconic national war hero, Lt. Michael P. Murphy.

Also during the press conference, Senator Croci announced a $400,000.00 State grant he secured for Suffolk County that has been earmarked specifically for the Museum. Funding for the construction, maintenance and operation of the Museum will be the responsibility of the Lt. Michael P. Murphy Navy SEAL Museum Foundation.

Senator Tom Croci said, “I am so very proud that this community will be the home of the first Navy Seal Museum in the northeast, paying tribute to a local hero and a true patriot, Lt. Michael Murphy, as well the Naval Special Warfare Community and its significant role in our nation’s security.”

“We are grateful to Senator Croci for securing the grant that will make this museum possible”, commented Islip

Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter. “This museum will be a treasure in our Town, and will remind visitors of the sacrifices that have been made by the members of the Special Forces community. While we can never repay them, we can honor the heroism and legacy of Lt. Michael Murphy, and all those who serve our nation.”

The museum will honor the ongoing mission and legacy of the U.S. Navy SEALs. An additional focus will be to continue the commitment to support the Sea Cadets program by utilizing a portion of the museum as a training facility. This museum will be the first of its kind in the entire northeast and only the third such museum in the country.

“The Murphy family is thrilled with the first ever Navy SEAL Museum in the Northeast named after our son, Michael”, said Dan Murphy, Father of Lt. Michael Murphy.

This project, the Lt. Michael P. Murphy Navy SEAL Museum/Sea Cadet Training Facility is a reality because of the hard work and commitment of State Senator Tom Croci, County Executive Steve Bellone and County Legislator, Bill Lindsay Jr. State Senator Tom Croci, a Navy

Commander who worked closely with the SEAL teams in Afghanistan, looked on this project as a labor of love and is supporting this project in both name and monetary support. This Museum/ Sea Cadet Training facility will be a reality because of Senator Croci’s hard work, support and commitment to our men and women in the armed forces.”

“Our hometown hero, Lt. Michael Murphy, made the ultimate sacrifice while protecting our country and our freedom,” said Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone. “His legacy continues to embody the American spirit, and I am extremely proud that his memory will live on through generations of Suffolk County residents through this Navy SEAL museum. This is not only a proud day for Lt. Murphy’s family and friends but for all of us in Suffolk County as we commemorate the accomplishments of this great American hero.”

The artist renderings and architectural elevations presented at the press conference show the 200’ by 185’ glassed walled building will be located at the north east side of the park, which also is the home of the Long Island Maritime Museum.

CHAMBER NAMES DIRECTORS - Islip Town Councilman Steve Flotteron recently attended the induction ceremony for the 2016 class of directors for the Islip Chamber of Commerce. Directors serve important roles in the Chamber and help the organization meet its goals of promoting economic growth in Islip. Councilman Flotteron thanked the directors for their advocacy on behalf of local small businesses.
