CENTRAL ISLIP, N.Y. – L.I. Against Domestic Violence, a leading provider of domestic violence and sexual assault services is pleased to announce the construction project that will result in our domestic violence shelter being able to accommodate victims of domestic violence who have pets. We are especially pleased to make this announcement during Domestic Violence Awareness Month, which is meant to bring attention to the issue of domestic violence and honor survivors and the lives lost to domestic violence.

The Shelter expansion will be the first domestic violence shelter on Long Island designed to allow for space to accommodate a survivor and pet living together.

According to research cited by the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence, up to 65% of domestic violence victims

delay or can’t escape their abusers because they are concerned about what will happen to their pets when they leave, and up to 85% of women entering domestic violence shelters reported that their partner had threatened, injured or killed their pet. However, only about 8 percent of domestic violence shelters in the United States permit pets. This leaves victims of domestic violence and pets in danger, as survivors often delay or never leave because they have nowhere to take a pet and fear what will happen if the pet is left behind.

According to Colleen Merlo, Executive Director of L.I. Against Domestic Violence, “The organization has helped hundreds of pets gain safety by working with local animal organizations and rescue groups to foster pets when a victim of domestic violence enters our shelter or goes to stay with a family member or

friend where a pet cannot be accommodated. But this option still leaves many victims of violence and pets in harm’s way and it’s not best practice for the human or the pet to be separated, especially immediately after a traumatic event. We are thrilled to be taking the next step in providing safety for victims of domestic violence and their pets. Coliving is an improvement over fostering and will open the possibility of shelter to families and individuals who never thought we could help them and their furry friends.”

LIADV’s Paws for a Cause Program will develop a safe place for pets to stay at the shelter. This will allow victims to gain safety, while keeping families intact and allow survivors and their children the benefit of comfort, reassurance and healing that family pets offer. The project is slated to be complete ahead of the holidays.

County Executive Steve Bellone said this of the project, “This initiative will significantly help with the mental and logistical impacts of domestic violence by providing a safe space for both survivors and their pets. For the more than 12 million men and women who fall victim to domestic violence, this is welcome news at a time they need comforting the most.”

Initial funding for this project is from the Mary Kay Foundation and through private donors. ### L.I. Against Domestic Violence provides a range of services that help over 14,000 Long Island adults and children each year to escape from abusive relationships and build new lives. Founded in 1976, we are a regional pioneer and leader in empowering victims and survivors, providing them with shelter and support, and working with law enforcement and

the community to prevent abuse.

The Mary Kay Foundation was created in 1996 and its two-fold mission includes funding women’s cancer research and ending domestic violence. Over the course of more than two decades, The Mary Kay Foundation has awarded

First Pet Friendly Domestic Violence Shelter on Long Island more than $78 million to women’s shelters and domestic violence service providers. The Cemetery of Lost Souls is a grass roots organization that gears up each year to create an elaborate Haunted House on the founder’s property, located at 350 Broadway in Massapequa Park. E v e r y bit of money raised through their annual event (admission, donations, sponsorships, etc.) is given to a chosen charity.

They rely heavily on devoted individuals and community support, as the actors and people who put on the haunt are volunteers. They have raised a lot of money over the years in donations alone and have donated to charities such as Autism Speaks, The Breast Cancer Research Foundation, Ronald McDonald House Charities and Long Island Cares.

This year they will bring the community a new interactive experience with the second Lost Souls Walk-Thru haunt, new rooms, new scares and new thrills! The event will run on October 12, 18-19, 25-26, 31 and November 1-2 from 7PM-11:30PM. The chosen charity for 2019 is Melissa’s Wish, a non-profit organization founded with the purpose of providing short term, non-medical financial aid in the form of a grant to caregivers who are assisting those afflicted with a serious illness, injury or end of life event.

They are actively looking for volunteers in the following areas: Digital Marketing (to help with social media marketing), Scare Team Members (actors to help put on the event), Security (watching over the event and making sure all guests are safe), Bake Team Members (to donate baked goods to sell at some of the events) and lastly, they are looking for an Electrician (to volunteer a few hours to help finalize last minute details for the event).

Volunteers must be 16 years of age and volunteer time can count towards community service hours!

Sponsorship opportunities are also available. This organization is looking for local businesses to sponsor the event. All sponsors will be listed on their website and will be given the opportunity to have their logo and or a small clip on a big screen at the event in front of the waiting line. This will be on a loop, so there is lots of exposure to be had!

East Islip’s Homecoming The traditional homecoming parade returned to East Islip on Sept. 28 to the delight of the community, with students, staff, families and friends proudly marching from Ruth C. Kinney Elementary School to the freshly renovated Sal Ciampi Field at Boomer Esiason Stadium.

From the first possession, the varsity football team took control of the game against Kings Park. By halftime,

East Islip had pulled out to a 49-7 lead over the Kingsmen and the thrilled crowd were ready for some entertainment, courtesy of the high school’s band and cheerleaders. Neel Patel and Danielle Heller were crowned 2019 homecoming king and queen. The homecoming court was rounded out by freshman representatives Muhammad Abdullah and Neoma LoCimple; sophomore representatives

Livia Nedd and Gerson Tamayo; junior representatives Enzo Ditta and Ryann Youngberg; senior class nominees Anthony Carroll, Mia Catalonotto, Jenna Golini, Leah Neville, Dylan Rigo and Alexander Zimmer.

After pulling the entire starting offense before the third quarter began, the undefeated Redmen went on to earn a lopsided 63-14 victory, capping a classic homecoming day.

This exclusive mobile unit provides basic veterinary care such as a wellness check, grooming, dental cleaning, flea & tick protection, microchipping, and vaccinations.

During the clinic the veterinarians treated 25 animals helping 18 veterans and distributed an assortment of pet supplies

to veterans in need.
