Moving right along By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Commuting. Whether by train, plane or automobile, it has the potential to be tedious, inconvenient and highly frustrating. For many years, I was fortunate to have a very short drive to work, bypassing Long Island’s fine highways and parkways – and all the joys they bring. (Yes, that was sarcasm.) This last year has more than made up for it. Case in point: Just the other morning, I was cruising on the Southern State when I passed one of those helpful overhead signs alerting you to any traffic

delays you might encounter up ahead. “Traffic Moving Well” it said. Wonderful. A few exits later, dead stop. No flashing lights, no sirens, no accidents in sight. Inching along, but why? Oh but there it was, way up ahead, the unmistakable orange cone – construction. Three lanes merging into one – no warning, no signs, not a human worker in sight… just a flashing arrow instructing the cars miles up ahead to start moving over. Perfect. Of course, even in such a situation when clearly no one is going anywhere fast, don’t think the drivers’ level of courtesy increases by even

the slightest bit. No, the vast majority of Long Islanders would rather speed up to the bumper of the car in front of them than let another vehicle merge in between. And so we wait, vainly attempting to pick a safe spot to sneak in. And so a 25-minute commute turns into 45 for no justifiable reason. Two lanes closed, an endless line of orange barricades… but no workers, no work underway, nothing. Just chaos and confusion and road rage of the most uniquely New York variety. Good thing we have those trustworthy overhead signs to guide the way.

Islip Town Councilman Anthony Senft recently thanked volunteers who committed many hours of labor to cleaning up Islip Beach. The volunteers came from community organizations, church groups, Kohl’s employees, local residents, and the Keep Islip Clean (KIC) organization. In addition to clearing the beach of refuse and debris, the volunteers also took the time to plant flowers and shrubs to help beautify the area. “We are grateful to that there are so many

dedicated volunteers in our community who help supplement the work of our Parks department and share a mutual goal of improving our public spaces,” said Councilman Anthony Senft. “The Town Board truly appreciated the time and effort these individuals and organizations made to ensure that Islip Beach remains a source of pride for all residents.” Those interested in volunteering for similar projects around Islip Town should contact Keep Islip Clean at 631.224.2627.

No matter how you slice it, picking a college is the culmination of your high school career. As a senior, the pressure associated with selecting where I will spend the next four years of my life is truly right around the corner. I’m almost done with all of my tests, essays and applications, but even if I receive that acceptance letter in the mail, how do I know where I truly want to attend? After acceptances, denials and waitlists, a student is still left with the daunting task of finding out which college truly fits him or her. There are many factors that play into choosing

where you would be the most happy. Are you an athlete? A study freak? A party animal? Countless variables can have an impact on both your social and psychological well being. Before you enroll in that Ivy League school, take a look around, because you may feel the urge to select a school that actually wants you. For instance, if a school of lesser prestige is offering you a scholarship, you might feel the urge to go there instead of a top tier college. Before you enroll anywhere, make it a point to visit! If you can, check out the prospective

college because, for all you know, you could hate it. If visiting is not an option, at least talk with a current student or alumni. No one can give you more insight than someone who is already in that situation. Attend a College Night! On October 2nd, St. John’s hosted its annual College Fair, with nearly 200 present. Showing up to one of these not only gives you a broader glance at many universities, but the up-close and personal time with an Admissions officer can be priceless. Feel it out, because this decision is undoubtably the most important one you will make thus far.

Directed by RCK art teacher Dana Belfiore, the kindergartners created their own versions of Picasso’s 1958 lithograph “Flowers for Peace” while the older children drew and colored his famous “Dove of Peace.” The projects served to spur related readings and discussions in the art classroom. “My

second-graders read about Picasso’s interest in creating a peaceful world through his art and fascination with drawing birds,” explained Belfiore. “The kindergartners discussed the reasons why you would give flowers to someone and how little acts of kindness can help promote peace.” The International Day of Peace, unofficially known as World Peace Day, is dedicated to the concept of peace, specifically the absence of war and violence. It has been observed every September 21st since 1982.

The 17th annual FTK Carnival welcomed the fall season and provided the children of the East Islip School District with three days of games, rides and snacks on the grounds of Timber Point Elementary School in East Islip, with proceeds helping to support important and enriching school activities. The festivities began on September 20th with a special meeting of East Islip’s Board of Education in the library at Timber Point, where the Board announced that the For the Kids Foundation had donated $60,000 to the East Islip School District for 2013-2014, a gift that

will fund this year’s high school and middle school musicals. “FTK was able to do this because of the people of the East Islip community, who continue to support our carnival, golf outing and Black Tie Gala,” said Nancy Goldfader, FTK’s president. Moving outdoors, the carnival’s opening ceremony began with the presentation of flags by a local Scout troop, who led the audience in the Pledge of Allegiance. Chorus and orchestra performances by select students from Timber Point and the district’s three other elementary schools (Connetquot,

John F. Kennedy and Ruth C. Kinney) followed, along with speeches from Goldfader and Linda J. Rozzi, the district’s new superintendent of schools. Also in attendance were other district administrators, principals and directors as well as members of the Board of Education. “This was our 17th annual carnival and it still going strong,” said Goldfader. “The outpouring of generosity from our gold sponsors, ride sponsors, family sponsors and all those who attended the carnival made it an extremely successful event.” Goldfader singled out FTK chairpersons Mary Finn and Pat Blair and FTK’s board for special kudos, adding, “Their energy, dedication and enthusiasm to ensure the carnival was enjoyed by all was essential.” Photo by: Glenn Reed

Suffolk County Legislator Lynne C. Nowick, Chair of the Legislature’s Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs Committee, recently met with Kathryn Curran, executive director of the Suffolk County Historical Society, to discuss the Society’s goals and upcoming projects. Since it was first settled in 1640, Suffolk County has experienced a rich history. The Society is working diligently to establish itself as one of the major anchors for downtown Riverhead by positioning itself as a bookend of the planned main Street cultural corridor linking the other art venues, theater, historic district and other points of interest. “The Suffolk County Historical Society contains a wealth of history, documents, artifacts and collections. It is a gem in the Riverhead community and a must visit destination for all of Long Islanders,” said Suffolk County Legislator Lynne C. Nowick The Suffolk County Historical Society was gifted with a Mobile Museum from the American Museum of Natural History. The Winnebago is handicapped accessible and outfitted with handson archeological and local cultural displays. It is able to travel to schools throughout Suffolk County and has a teacher on board to educate the students. The Society’s upcoming exhibit, Back to the Future, features contemporary artists’ work, which reflects elements of the Society’s permanent collection. The show will run from October 18th through November 23rd. Fall Wildlife Festival

East Islip High School’s 2013-2014 video production class kicked off the new school year with a special multi-class endeavor. As part of an ongoing effort to teach the new video production students how to use the studio, technology education teacher James Connell invited another technology education class to join his students for a live talk show titled “East Islip’s Talk TV.” With the help of Harold Kench’s graphic

communications class, the high school’s studio was filled with a live audience who watched the program from the studio floor. After the presentation was over, Kench’s class was actively involved in critiquing the efforts of the video production students, providing valuable feedback to help improve their craft as the year unfolds. “This activity is typically done early in September in an effort to provide the students with the

experience of filming with an actual live studio audience,” explained Connell. “Talk TV” serves as a precursor to later, larger events like “Embers Coffee House,” another live event filmed in the studio where students invite individuals from around the school to perform, including guitarists, poets and other acts. East Islip High School’s Department of World Languages hosted a successful trip to sunny Italy this past June, led by teachers Marylou Ferrieri and Joseph Tursi. The school’s students of the Italian language enjoyed an exciting nineday tour as they visited the famed cities of Rome, Florence, Venice, Pisa, Verona, Assisi and Orvieto. In addition to practicing their Italian skills, the

high schoolers enjoyed romantic gondola rides, visited Romeo and Juliet’s balcony, toured the Vatican museums, visited the Leaning Tower of Pisa, and walked through the Roman Colosseum. They also had the chance to experience the taste of authentic Italian cuisine and gelato. “Everyone on the trip had such a great time,” said Tursi, noting that a parent of one of the students recently told him, “We’re

Joining The Ranks

William Joseph Farrell successfully completed his Eagle Board of Review in March, officially making him the 44th Eagle Scout of Troop 205 of Great River. William’s Eagle Court of Honor will be held on

Sunday, November 3rd, starting at 1 p.m. at Timber Point Elementary School, 200 Timberpoint Road, East Islip, NY 11730. William Farrell is a member of Troop 205, sponsored by the Great River Fire Department, under the direction of Scoutmaster Mark Businski. On his “road to Eagle”, William has served the troop as Assistant Patrol Leader and Den Chief for Cub Scout Pack 205, East Islip, NY. William is also a member of the Order of the Arrow, the Boy Scout Honorary Camping Society. William has also earned the following BSA Awards: Emergency Preparedness, Kayaking, and SCUBA. William has had

many unique Scouting experiences, including being a member of the contingent to the West Point Military Academy Camporee, Troop 205 trips to Washington, DC, Philadelphia, Gettysburg and Boston. William has also attended summer camp at Camp Wakpominee in Fort Ann, NY for five summer seasons. To become an Eagle Scout, the Scout must earn 21 Merit Badges, of which 12 are specifically Eagle required, progress through six rank advancements – from Tenderfoot, Second Class, First Class, Star, Life, then Eagle, and also plan, develop, and implement a major Service Project for the Community. The

Service Project that William conducted with the assistance of his fellow Troop members, friends and family members, was the design and development of the beautiful outdoor team photo area at the East Islip Soccer Club, East Islip, NY, that has and continues to be used by the Club and teams season after season. As William reflects on his Scouting experience, he recently said, “My time in Troop 205 has given me access to some of the best times of my life. I have been to Summer Camp at Camp Wakpominee for five Summers and have made great friends. Many of the merit badges I earned there have given me life-long

skills.” William is a Senior at East Islip High School, where he is on the school’s Science Honor Society and Language Honor Society. He serviced on the East Islip academic team. He also attends the Medical Career Academy at East Islip High School. His plan after High School will be to attend college to major in a science discipline in a pre-med program to fulfill his life-long goal to become a physician or surgeon. William worked the past two summer seasons as a camp counselor for the Town of Islip. William has also been active in sports during his school years in the East Islip School District, including

playing linebacker on the Varsity Football Team, soccer at the East Islip Soccer Club, and baseball with the Town of Islip. Community Service has been important to William as he has logged 63.3 community service hours, including helping at a soup kitchen in Brentwood, volunteering at South Side Hospital and various boy community service projects. William is the son of Patricia and Kevin Farrell of East Islip. Kevin is an Assistant Scoutmaster of Troop 205. William has a sister, Lauren Farrell, who is in the 11th grade in East Islip High School.
