Cartons are made mainly from paper with thin layers of plastic and, in some cases, aluminum. Myth: Cartons have multiple layers that prevent them from being recycled. Fact: The multiple layers in cartons are broken down during the recycling process. The paper is used to make new paper products and the aluminum or plastic can be used to generate energy or become binding. In some cases, the entire carton is used to make building materials. Myth: Most places don’t accept cartons for recycling.

(NAPSI)—Recycling is one of the easiest ways the average person can help the environment. Not only does recycling prevent items from ending up in landfills, it reduces the amount of raw materials used to make new products. Here are some myths and facts about recycling commonly used food and beverage cartons: Myth: Cartons can’t be recycled. Fact: Cartons are certainly recyclable. They can be turned into new products, such as paper towels, tissues and writing paper. They can also be turned into environmentally friendly building materials, in a process that uses no water or chemicals. Myth: If a package doesn’t have a recycling logo on it, it’s not recyclable. Fact: What can and can’t be recycled varies by community and is primarily dependent on the recycling facility. Cartons can carry the standard “Please Recycle” logo under the Federal Trade Commission’s green guidelines. It’s best to contact your community or check its website to find out what can and can’t be recycled. Myth: You have to put your recyclables in a plastic bag and then in your recycling bin. Fact: Plastic bags can jam up equipment at recycling centers, slowing everything down and potentially preventing recyclables from getting recycled. Instead, place materials loosely in recycling bins or carts. Myth: You have to crush cartons and remove the caps and straws before recycling them. Fact: Just empty any remaining product. No crushing is required, and the caps can be left on. You may want to stuff the straws back into the

Islip School District Technology Integration Specialist Timothy Brush and Islip Middle School science teacher Ann Marie Mills were recognized at the Sept. 10 Board of Education meeting for recent honors that Brush and Mills had received. Brush was named a Nassau Association of School Technologists Award Recipient by NASTECH last June. NASTARS are chosen for their innovation, their ability to seamlessly integrate technology and their exemplary technology leadership. In his position as technology integration specialist, Brush has worked with teachers throughout the district for the past few years to incorporate technology into their classrooms, providing richer experiences for students and teachers alike. With his help, Islip’s teachers have been

able to collaborate with schools and experts across the country and around the globe. This included providing Islip Middle School sixth graders with the opportunity to livestream with archeologists in Egypt as an enhancement to their social studies curriculum as well as running a Tech Café for secondary teachers seeking help with technological questions. Mills was the recipient of not one but two awards recognizing her excellence as an educator last spring, receiving the Presidential Innovation Award for Environmental Educators as well as the Suffolk County Science Teachers Association’s Middle School Teacher of the Year award. The former award, administered by the White House Council on Environmental Quality in partnership with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, is

given to outstanding teachers who employ innovative approaches to environmental education and use the environment as a context for learning for their students. The STANYS award recognizes outstanding and innovative teachers who helps students and other teachers both inside and outside the classroom and organizes special student programs while successfully introducing new programs, teaching methods and materials.

The Twilight Wish Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization whose mission is to honor and enrich the lives of seniors through intergenerational Twilight Wish celebrations. Since the foundation’s founding in 2003, their goal has been to make the world a nicer place to age, one Twilight Wish at a time. When a Twilight Wish is granted, a senior is recognized for all that they have done throughout their lives and is shown that they are appreciated and valued. This organization truly makes a difference in the lives of seniors nationwide. Often the elderly gets overlooked or they simply can’t seem to achieve their goals on their own. This is where Twilight Wish steps in. Judy was a local wish recipient from Kings Park. Her wish was to visit her mother in Rochester and take her to her favorite restaurant. Judy received round-trip plane tickets, a hotel stay, a car rental and a gift certificate to her mother’s favorite restaurant from this foundation! The process of applying to be a wish recipient is fairly simple. You can visit their website at www. twilightwish.org and click on the “Wishes” tab followed by “Request A Twilight Wish”. From here you can start the process. Applications can be submitted for yourself or on behalf of someone else. The foundation has a committee that meets on a monthly basis to review new applications and they determine the eligibility of the applicants and wish requests. If approved, the foundation will grant the wish as funding and resources become available (if they are not already available).
