Islip Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter was joined by members of the Islip Town Board, and elected officials on the Federal, State, County and local levels for the 5th annual “Islip Goes Purple” event held Thursday, September 6th at Town Hall, kickingoff with a Color Fun Run

“Islip Goes Purple symbolizes our continued commitment to stand together, UNITED in memory of the lives lost, those in recovery, those struggling, and the families throughout the Town of Islip and across Long

Island impacted by mental illness, struggling with mental health, and those affected by a substance use disorder…and it does not discriminate, it can affect anyone, regardless of economic or social status,” said Islip Supervisor, Angie Carpenter.

“For the last 4 years,

Islip community members, business owners and community partners have been pivotal in the success of Islip Goes Purple, which is one way we can come together as a community,” said Supervisor Carpenter. The effort has grown throughout Nassau and Suffolk Counties, with

Brookhaven, Babylon and Huntington Townships following the Town of Islip and lighting their communities purple, along with Massapequa Park in the Town of Oyster Bay.

“Having elected officials from the Federal, State, and County levels joining us here today is testament to

the fact that substance use disorder, mental illness and caring for one’s own mental health are paramount issues at the forefront of what we as elected officials must be prepared to address and tackle,” added the Supervisor.

Islip Buccaneers Win 2023 Suffolk Senior Championship

On August 24, 2023, at the Brookhaven Diamond in the Pines Ballpark in Coram, NY the Islip Bucs defeated the Brookhaven Sledgehammers in a four-game sweep of the divisional playoffs. The Bucs rebounded from a tough first year in the senior league in 2022 going 0 -50 in their first year of existence. In 2022 the majority of the players on the team had not played competitive softball in almost 20 years. They suffered through injuries and a tough losing season. However, manager Bob Patch had the foresight that with some hard work and the addition of a few new players, the team would be more successful and could turn things around in 2023. The 2023 season started with some tough practices in the cold rainy spring months of March and April but the Bucs were ready for a more successful season. The Bucs went 29-19 during the regular season finishing in 2nd place and won four straight games in the playoffs to secure the division title. Team members

Happy 95th Birthday Hertha Shank!

Longtime Town of Islip resident Hertha Shank celebrated her 95th birthday with friends and family at the Joyce Fitzpatrick Senior Center recently. Islip Town Supervisor, Angie Carpenter presented Hertha with a citation recognizing her exemplary life, a single mom who worked as a bookkeeper

and raised two children, Robert and Christine in their home in Country Village where Hertha has lived for 67 years.

“Our Town has the distinct honor of recognizing truly extraordinary individuals who live their lives with determination and drive, leading by example to be a force for

positive change in their community. On behalf of the Islip Town Board, we wish you enduring joy and happiness,” said Supervisor Carpenter.

Hertha has been an active member of the Joyce Fitzpatrick senior center for more than 20 years. Hertha is beloved grandmother to Kerri and Sean, and a devoted friend.

Lung Association Launches First LUNG FORCE Walk

Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths on Long Island – and throughout the U.S. In an effort to end lung cancer, the American Lung Association is launching its first ever

LUNG FORCE Walk Long Island at Eisenhower Park on October 7, 2023

LUNG FORCE initiative unites those impacted by lung cancer and their caregivers to stand together against lung cancer. LUNG FORCE Walks happen all around the county as celebratory and welcoming

events that provides critical funds for lifesaving lung cancer research, early detection initiatives and awareness. The New York City Walk, which took place in May, saw more than 1,000 people participate, raising over $275,000.

“The Long Island community has been deeply impacted by Lung Cancer, and many Long Island residents have joined us for

events in Manhattan and the Hudson Valley. This year, we are proud to bring our LUNG FORCE walk right here to Eisenhower Park where more families impacted by lung disease are able to participate,” said Erica Masin, Executive Director at the Lung Association. “Today, more Americans than ever are surviving lung cancer. The survival rate has increased by nearly 40% in the past decade—but there is still so much work to be done. On October 7 Long Island residents will

come together to lighten the burden for people living with lung disease, honor the memory of those we’ve lost, and lift up those who need our support.”

Nicole Sturiano, a resident of Ridge, New York and captain of Team Jeanine has helped raise over $50,000 and has participated in the New York City LUNG FORCE Walk since its inception in 2015. She said, “My sister, Jeanine, was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer at only 42 years old. After just two years of

fighting the toughest battle of her life, Jeanine passed away on December 1, 2015. Our team has been walking to carry on the legacy of my sister, to advance the effort to find a cure, and to bring awareness to lung cancer. I hope one day to see a world free of lung cancer so that no one has to suffer the way my sister did, and no one has to lose their loved one to lung cancer.”

The LUNG FORCE Walk is great for friends, family and company teams to come together to support people

with lung disease and lung cancer, have fun and get some great exercise. Joining the LUNG FORCE Walk supports the work of the American Lung Association to defeat lung cancer, improve the air we breathe, reduce the burden of lung disease on individuals and their families, and eliminate tobacco use and tobaccorelated diseases.

Zoom Workshop: Nutrition And Healthy Living A Free Forum For Breast Cancer Survivors

Dr. Heather Zinkin has a special interest in integrative medicine, patient wellness and

nutrition. She attended the University of Pennsylvania and graduated Summa Cum Laude. She graduated from NYU School of Medicine and performed her medical internship at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston. She completed a residency in radiation oncology at a

combined program at Tufts and Brown University and served as chief resident. She then returned to her hometown where she has been practicing for the past 15 years and was appointed Chief of Radiation Medicine at Huntington Hospital. She has given many survivorship lectures both

in hospital and community settings including active participation in the Northwell Wellness Center. She has also served on various physician panels for community education and holds certificates in Nutrition from Cornell University.
