This is the fifth year for the Over 50 Fair celebrating “60 is the new 50.” According to Fair Director Barbara Kaplan, “Because Americans are living longer, they should seek to live life to its fullest. There are so many opportunities here on Long Island. Air Of Excitement For East Islip’s high school and middle school, the first day of classes on September 4th was business as usual, welcoming returning students as well as new sixth- and ninthgraders for a fresh year of educational enrichment and challenges. For the four elementary schools in the district, it proved more of an exciting change due to the shift to a different grade-level configuration, with both students and teachers moving to new schools. At Connetquot and

Timber Point, the focus has shifted to the youngest students, as the schools educate kindergartners, first-graders and secondgraders, as well as those enrolled in the SCOPE preschool program. “There was such excitement in the air as former Connetquot students quickly made friends with the new entrants, and it was impressive to see students engaged in many meaningful learning experiences,” said Principal Deborah Smith. “We are off to a wonderful start,

Recess time at Islip’s Maud S. Sherwood Elementary School just became a little more fun and inviting as the school officially opened its new and improved playground on September 8th. “I’m so excited for the students of Sherwood,” remarked Principal Dr. Maureen Martin. “It’s so important for the kids to get to focus on their fitness and health, while still being able to play!”

The new ADA compliant equipment and safety carpet, which has the highest safety rating of all available carpeting, was installed during the summer and was included in the Fall 2012 community approved bond. “We’re delighted that the bond was able to include new playground equipment at all three of our elementary schools,” said Superintendent of Schools Susan A. Schnebel.

“The new equipment gives our students a safe place to go and play.” To become familiar with the new equipment, all students will meet with physical education teacher Greg Ruccia during their regular gym classes to review safety procedures. Playgrounds at Commack Road and Wing elementary schools are schedule to open shortly.

The Islip Town Board recently honored Jennifer Hartmann, a Critical Care Emergency Medical Technician and a Captain at Community Ambulance Company, who has worked endlessly to save the lives of others within our community. On July 16th, she was serving as the Advanced Life Support First Responder and was dispatched to a man experiencing chest pains

at a local doctor’s office. Due to the severity of the patient’s condition, EMS was requested and within two minutes, Jennifer arrived at the scene. After acquiring a 12 Lead EKG and confirming with the physician, it was confirmed that the patient was actively having a heart attack. Jennifer knew to begin intravenous access and administered emergency medication to help stabilize the patient’s

vital signs. She stayed and cared for the patient while being transported to the hospital. It was due to her quick reaction and vital knowledge that the patient was able to get to the hospital quickly, be treated, and ultimately, make a full recovery. Jennifer has been an inspiration to all members of the Community Ambulance Company, along with all those within our community.

Crunched By Tech By: Jamie Lynn Ryan In an age where technology has overtaken society, it is only natural to pause periodically and wonder, at what cost? These days, most everything can be communicated via text, various messenger apps, social networks and emoticons, with little reserved for good oldfashioned person-to-person contact. As the masses jump on the latest smartphones and tablets the moment they’re unveiled, it is hard not to think how did we manage to exist before? Personally, I did not own a cell phone until the later college years, if even then. Prior to that, it was

payphones and asking the teacher for a pass to the Main Office to call home in an emergency. Nowadays, walk into any elementary school and smartphones are just as common a trend as the latest sneakers and accessories. What’s wrong with this picture? Plenty. First off, no eight year-old needs a smartphone. An old, hand-me-down standard cell phone in case of emergencies? Perhaps. And once you move on to middle school and high school, the potential for cheating, texting during class and surfing the web instead of paying attention to the lesson at hand skyrockets. I don’t care

what disciplinary actions are set in place; the integrity of the classroom immediately declines with each cell phone that enters. This is not to say that those in college or the workforce are any better equipped to balance the technology they “have to have” with a little thing called reality. No, we are just as likely to send 47 text messages rather than have a phone conversation, to use a cute little smiley face in favor of typing an entire word, to keep in touch via Facebook rather than schedule a lunch date... That said, I am eagerly awaiting the arrival of my newly pre-ordered iPhone 6 :)

Sam has been very active in music and theatre, where he has been a member of the Tri-M Music Honor Society, Honors Symphony Orchestra, high school band, Wind Ensemble, Honors Choir, and a member of the Nassau County Chamber Choir. He has also been either the lead and/ or member of several musicals at the East Islip High School as well as at the CM Performing Arts Center. Sam participated and performed in the high school band for the SCMEA (Suffolk County Music Educators’ Association and for trumpet, piano and voice in NYSSMA (New York State School Music Association). Sam has been involved with sports and has served on the following high school varsity teams: Swimming, Tennis and Track & Field. He also was a competitive swimmer on many swim teams for almost seven years. Sam earned his Brown Belt with L.I. Ninjutsu and has been working as a lifeguard with the Town of Islip for the past two summers. Community service has been important to Sam as he has distributed gifts to Long Island Veterans at the VA Hospital, decorated the veterans graves at Calverton National Cemetery for Memorial Day, worked at the Father’s Day Pancake Breakfast with the East Islip Historical Society for many years, provided leadership service activities through “For the Kids” Foundation, performed multiple clean up tasks for the Sea Tuck Organization, the Busch Farms Tree Planting, the East Islip High School building, and the Pleasant Valley Club, along with working on many Eagle Service Projects within Troops 205 and 508. Sam Sharkey successfully completed his Eagle Board of Review on June 8th, officially making him the 54th Eagle Scout of Troop 205 of Great River. Sam’s Eagle Court of Honor will be held on Sunday, October 5th, starting at 4 p.m. at the Southward Ho Country Club, 601 West Montauk Hwy in Bay Shore. Sam Sharkey was a member of Troop 508, under the direction of William Pomerantz as Scoutmaster and currently a member of Troop 205, sponsored by the Great River Fire Department, with Scoutmaster Mark Businski. On his “road to Eagle”, Sam has served both troops as a Troop Guide, Assistant Patrol Leader and Bugler. Sam is also a member of the Order of the Arrow, the Boy Scout Honorary Camping Society. He has also earned the BSA Mile Swim Award at Boy Scout Summer Camp at Camp Minsi, PA. Sam has had many unique Scouting experiences, including multiple Suffolk County Council District Camporees, the Historic Trail Walk at Gettysburg, VA, Cathedral Pines County Park biking trip, Washington, D.C. scouting trip, and a summer camper multiple times at Camp Minsi – where he endured and survived the “Minsi Muck Hike” and the “Fridgit Froggie.” To become an Eagle Scout, the Scout must earn 21 merit badges, of which 12 are specifically Eagle required, progress through six rank advancements – from Tenderfoot, Second Class,

First Class, Star, Life, then Eagle, and also plan, develop, and implement a major service project for the community.Sam has actually earned a total of 26 merit badges. The Service Project that Sam conducted with the assistance of his fellow Troop members, friends and family members, was the design and development of the St. Mary’s R.C. Church, East Islip Beautification Project on the main Church sign and exterior east side of Sacred Heart Hall. Besides landscape plantings, a rock divider and reflection bench, Sam’s Eagle Project was highlighted with a memorial brick and stone patio that was engraved in loving memory and dedicated in honor of his Grandparents, Rocco and Catherine Ranaudo, who both had their funeral masses at St. Mary’s R. C. Church. As Sam reflects on his Scouting experience, he recently said, “Becoming an Eagle Scout is a journey that I am proud of. This journey continues not only because of Scouting activities, but also activities that happen in your everyday life.” Sam went on to say, “I want to continue helping people in any way that I can. I will pass down the Boy Scout tradition to my own children someday. I have learned so much being a Scout in the many opportunities I have had from earning all of my diverse merit badges, to summer camp, to weekend excursions. Being a Boy Scout is one of the best things I have done in my life so far. It has shown me new opportunities that will help in determining my future.” Sam is an incoming senior at East Islip High School, where he has been an outstanding scholar student, taking either all Honors and/or Advanced Placement Classes. A Big Year Each year, as fall approaches, I catch myself reflecting upon the past year. 2014 was a huge one for me, as it marked the beginning of the next chapter in my academic career. This year, I started at Villanova University. From what I can tell, Villanova is the right place for me. I’ve already gotten pretty involved, and I feel very welcome here. From the renowned orientation process, I was able to garner an understanding of the qualities that Villanova was founded upon - Caritas, Veritas, Unitas. These Latin words translate to mean Charity, Truth and Unity.

For nearly two centuries, Villanova has been producing bright minds using those three values. I’m proud to say that I have the opportunity to experience everything this university has to offer. As important as the transition to school was for me, this year wasn’t all about college. Over the summer, I strengthened bonds with friends and family. I’ve never felt tighter with my coworkers, because they finally stopped viewing me as a kid. My years on Fire Island have afforded me many things, including new employment opportunities and a unique outlook on life.

A few months ago, I graduated high school. This was a big marker in my life. My grandfather passed away in August. He was very important to me, and I think about him all the time. I went to the National Championships for Rowing this year. As the culmination of four years of hard work, it was something I will be forever proud of. On a less personal note, my community grew. We welcomed new neighbors, businesses and opportunities. In just a few short months, my life has changed dramatically. I guess you can say it has been a big year.

The Guilds of Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center recently presented a check for $100,000 to The Good Samaritan Hospital Foundation to support several premier hospital services including cardiology and pediatrics. This most recent Guild donation will enable the acquisition of new equipment including cardiac monitoring for faster diagnosis in arrhythmia patients. Run To Stop Bullying Every day, more than 160,000 children nationwide stay home from school to avoid being bullied. Not only are the effects of bullying on a child felt immediately, but they can also be lifelong – or even tragic. That’s why CAPS is inviting the community to support CAPS at its 2nd Annual Stand Up, Don’t Stand By 5K Walk/Run to End Bullying on October 5th, as part of National Bullying Prevention Month. Check-in starts at 8:00 a.m. at Sunken Meadow State Park in Kings Park; the race and walk will follow at 9 a.m. A Kiddie Fun Run for children under

8 is scheduled for 8:45 a.m. The entry fee is $25 per person, $40 for family (up to 4 participants). Arrive before 8 a.m. for free parking. Participants who are pre-registered by September 26th will receive a complimentary t-shirt. Pre-registered families will receive two t-shirts. Walkers, runners, families, schools and corporate teams are invited to participate. All ages and skill levels are welcome.
