Stony Brook University has been named in Princeton Review’s 2015 Green Honor Roll, an annual list that offers a measure of how environmentally friendly universities are on a scoring scale of 60 to 99. Stony Brook, one of 24 universities to receive a score of 99 (the highest possible score), is among 861 colleges reviewed this year. Selection is based on data collected in its 2013-14 surveys of schools concerning their sustainability-related practices, policies, and academic offerings. “Implementing green technologies, resources, and pollution-decreasing programs is a commitment
that Stony Brook University has made to its students, faculty, staff, and they to their campus and to the community at large,” said Stony Brook University President Samuel L. Stanley Jr., MD. “We are in great company, and I am proud to say that as we continue to increase our efforts, and as we all continue to reduce our carbon footprint, everyone can take pride and celebrate in this outstanding distinction.” Stony Brook has a long history of green awareness and environmental sustainability. New Principal Welcomed
Following the retirement of longtime Principal Dr. Eileen Rossman, Islip High School officially welcomed new Principal Michael Mosca on July 1st. Mosca brings with him a wealth of educational experience, having spent the last four years as the executive assistant principal at Comsewogue High School and previously as assistant principal at John F. Kennedy Middle School, also in the Comsewogue School District. Prior to his start date, Mosca spent significant time at the high school in an effort to create a smooth leadership transition. “Becoming the principal of Islip High School is truly a dream come true,” said Mosca. “I have worked my entire career to have an opportunity like this, and I am very grateful that Islip
selected me to serve their community.” During his years as the executive assistant principal, Mosca was responsible for an array of administrative duties, including overseeing the guidance department, supervising building discipline, scheduling and administrating all New York State examinations, providing staff development and maintaining the building and district websites. Mosca is a strong proponent of integrating modern technology into everyday curriculum. “The Web is an extremely powerful tool that is here to stay,” he said. “It is our job as educators to teach our students how to use it properly. This provides students an opportunity to utilize resources and a medium that they are already very comfortable with to learn content, collaborate with peers and communicate with their teachers.” He also believes in educating the whole child and is a firm believer in character education. “School should be more than learning standards and assessments,” he said.
“It is our job to educate the whole child to ensure that not only will they be prepared academically for college and career, but we provide a strong moral foundation so they can make positive contributions to their community.” Mosca holds a Bachelor’s degree in history and secondary education from LIU Post, a Master’s degree from Adelphi University in general psychology, a Master’s degree in educational leadership from the College of New Rochelle and permanent certifications in school district administrator and school administration and supervision. Prior to his years as an administrator, he worked as a social studies teacher in the Freeport School District. “Islip already has an exceptional reputation, and I hope to build on that terrific foundation to prepare the Islip students for an ever-changing global society,” Mosca said. “I look forward to serving the Islip community and working collaboratively with all stakeholders to ensure the success of the students of Islip.”
Remembrance Ceremony The Islip Town Board will remember the 13th anniversary of the tragic events of September 11th, 2001, during its annual remembrance ceremony to be held at the 9/11 monument, located at Veteran’s Memorial Park, just west of Islip Town Hall, on Thursday, September 11th, at 5 pm. The Islip Town Board will be joined by fellow elected officials, area fire departments, local clergymen, civic leaders, local veterans groups and residents to pay tribute to the men and women who lost their lives during the 9/11 terrorist attacks. The ceremony, led by Islip Town Supervisor Tom
Croci, will begin with the Lt. Michael Murphy Navy Sea Cadet Corps of West Sayville leading the color guard around Town Hall, with Town Board members and other officials following behind, followed by the Pledge of Allegiance. An opening prayer will be given by Reverend Joseph Schlafer, Pastor of St. John Nepomucene of Bohemia. Supervisor Croci will be joined by Blaise Gemellaro, First Vice President of the Islip Town Fire Chiefs, in making opening remarks before Town Board members read the names of the 90 Islip Town residents who perished on that fateful day.
A presentation and laying of a wreath will be conducted by Councilwoman Trish Bergin Weichbrodt and Councilman Steve Flotteron, with musical accompaniment from the Suffolk County Police Emerald Society Pipe Band. A closing prayer will be offered by Rabbi Dr. Steven Moss of B’nai Israel Reform Temple of Oakdale. The ceremony will conclude with closing remarks by Supervisor Croci.
