Turning Pro By: Jamie Lynn Ryan So I recently decided that, seeing as my obsession with photography has only grown stronger over the years, I should probably invest in an actual camera one of these days – you know, the kind with a lens, adjustable settings, the whole deal. Smartphones are great and all, but realistically, there are certain images that would be better served by something a bit more… professional. Add to that the fact that, as a working journalist, I have often contemplated delving into the world of freelance photography, taking one of my favorite hobbies and turning it

into, well, something more than random meandering in search of sunsets and landscapes and quirky angles. Of course, I suppose this pursuit would also involve photographing humans from time to time…not exactly my favorite subject. See, the beauty of a landscape – aside from its quite literal beauty, of course – is that the only changing factors you need to contend with are weather-related. People, well, they’re a whole different story. They blink, they look away, they grow impatient and start waving their arms and talking before the flash ﬁnishes going off… all great material for the photo album. No wonder

why most of my digital camera roll winds up going straight to the trash. In this day and age, with all the mobile photography apps available, everyone purports to be a photographer in his or her own right. Take your smartphone, experiment with a couple of ﬁlters, post the ﬁnished product on Facebook and Instagram… then sit back and wait for the “likes,” “comments” and “shares” to come flooding in. Easy, right? Personally, I’d like to see some higher quality material on my newsfeed. Step one: purchase a “real” camera. Step two: learn how to use it. Step three: set off in search of those sunsets – and maybe a few people. Maybe.

The summer months are traditionally a challenging time for blood centers to collect donated units – school breaks, summer vacations, and warm weather all have negative impacts on blood drive scheduling and donor attendance. About 4.5 million Americans receive blood transfusions every year, and nearly 2,000 donations are needed each day in New York and New Jersey alone. One in seven hospital admissions will need a blood transfusion, including cancer and surgery patients, trauma and burn victims, newborn babies and new mothers. “We’re encouraging everyone who is eligible to roll up their sleeves and donate,” said Andrea Cefarelli, Executive Director of Recruitment at New York Blood Center. “Summer blood donations help prevent a shortage, allowing us to continue providing life-saving units to patients and hospitals.” Donors with O-negative blood type, or “universal donors,” are especially encouraged to donate, as their blood can be used in emergency situations when there is no time for blood typing. There is no substitute for blood donations. Blood products have a limited shelf life, and supplies must be continually replenished.

A single donation can help save at least three lives when the blood is separated into its components: red blood cells, plasma and platelets. Red blood cells, for example, are used to make up for blood lost – car accident victims may need as many as 50 or more red cell transfusions. Plasma and platelets, on the other hand, contain clotting factors to help stop bleeding. They are used to treat patients with blood diseases and patients undergoing chemotherapy or a bone marrow transplant. Any company, community organization, place of worship, or individual may host a blood drive. Blood donors receive free mini-medical exams on site including information about their temperature, blood pressure and hematocrit level. Eligible donors include those people at least age 16 (parental consent is required for 16 year-olds), who weigh a minimum of 110 pounds, are in good health and meet all Food & Drug Administration and NY or NJ State Department of Health donor criteria. People age 76 or older may donate if they have a doctor’s note on ﬁle with New York Blood Center or if they bring one on the day of the blood drive.

consisted of a two-day program, complete with workshops on management, technology and instructional routines; games where teachers worked together with two of physical education teachers to complete challenges; and model lessons conducted by the district’s New York State Master Teachers. “New staff gain invaluable insight as they observe how a class is conducted complete with routines and procedures,” said Linda Lippman, the district’s assistant superintendent of administrative services. “Orientation provides

the opportunity for new teachers to meet and share ideas and concerns. It cultivates a sense of belonging and reduces the anxiety associated with the ﬁrst day of school.” A bus tour of the historic hamlet of Islip had been part of orientation for many years, and was resurrected this year due to the number of new hires. Community members Kay Erwood and Nancy Libert served as hosts and color commentators, sharing the history and joy of the community with the incoming faculty.

Five determined new graduates of the East Islip High School Class of 2015 – Joshua Castillo, Elaina Drywa, John Munoz, Lauren Saxberg and Hugens Tranquille – participated in a summer commencement ceremony on August 27th at the school’s library. Jonathan Thomas also graduated, but did not attend the ceremony. Clad in red robes and caps, the ﬁve future alumni entered to the sound of

“Pomp and Circumstance,” in front of an audience that included their proud families as well as central administration, district directors and Board of Education President Philip Montuori Sr. and trustee Jessica Carney. “Your high school diploma is a prize that no one can take away from you,” said Principal William Brennen. “Be proud that you didn’t give up, be proud that you rose to the challenge and be

proud that you have earned the right to call yourselves East Islip High School alumni.” “This isn’t the end of your academic road, it is the springboard to lifelong learning,” Superintendent of Schools John V. Dolan told the new graduates, before Montuori handed a diploma to each young man and woman and they stepped off onto the next path to their futures.
