Ryan Gorman has joined the music faculty at Islip Middle School for the 2022-2023 school year. He will teach sixth, seventh and eighth-grade band and jazz band, and also serve as assistant director for Islip High School’s marching band.He previously worked as the band director at Weehawken High School in New Jersey, winning three USBands State Championships and a national championship with the program, before moving to Long Island this summer.Gorman holds a bachelor’s degree in music education from the Mason Gross School of the Arts at Rutgers University. While at Rutgers, he studied piano, trumpet and voice, and performed with the Rutgers Wind Ensemble, Symphonic Winds and Kirkpatrick Choir. He was also a member of the Rutgers Marching Band, performing at Super Bowl XLVIII and on “The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon.”

Although they do not have a physical cafe yet, since they started in 2016, they have hosted countless “meal events”, primarily at the VFW Hall on Edwards Street in Patchogue. Their meal events are socially engaging events, usually running for about 2.5 hours multiple times a month. They are meant to bring the community together, while serving anyone who attends a fresh healthy meal. This nonproﬁt is also licensed to offer the FEAST Program. The FEAST Program is a comprehensive health program, which offers in-person classes. FEAST stands for Food Education, Access, Support and Together. “We at Harmony Cafe believe that a healthy life consists of whole foods, whole people and whole communities,” said Rosemarie. “However, many people don’t have access to healthy fresh food, don’t have a strong support system and feel isolated from the community. Unhealthy diets is among some of the key contributors to the dramatic rise in obesity and dietary diseases affecting people in our country today. In order to address these issues, the FEAST Program serves parents or heads or households through our comprehensive 12-week Wellness Program. It is a very successful program!”

Cafe, grew up in a working-class family, where money was tight and food insecurity was sometimes a cause of stress. Her vision for this organization is to have a storefront cafe that will serve healthy meals based upon a donation model.

Polish American Museum New Exhibit

Recently, the Polish American Museum has acquired, from the Poles in American Foundation, a set of original oil paintings from the collection of the late Edward Pinkowski. The creative paintings by the deceased artist Edward Lis are “American Heroes of the United States Army” (during World War II of Polish heritage). Sgt. Stephen Gregg, Sgt. Joseph Sadowski and Second Lt Joseph Sarnoski were the recipients of the Congressional Medal of Honor.Also in this collection is a painting of the first American Polish Graduate of the United States Military Academy, West Point, Lt. Col. George Sokalski. Included in this collection is a portrait of Roman J. Jaworowski, editor of the newspaper “Echo Polski” (1863-1865) as well as a bronze bust of Casimir Pulaski and Thaddeus Kosciuszko.TheLate Edward Pinkowski was a lifetime member of the Polish American Museum and founder of the Poles in America Foundation. With the help of EJ Autism Foundation founder Bea Huste-Petersen and Wantagh’s Fast Signs company, the East Islip School District recently created and installed “communication station” boards at each of its four elementary schools. John F. Kennedy Elementary School, Ruth C. Kinney Elementary School, Connetquot Elementary School and Timber Point Elementary School all have the new “communication stations.” This initiative was the brainchild of Connetquot special education teacher Crystal Ann Chiari. “I saw this communication board at a playground in my home district and thought it would be a great addition to our East Islip community,” Chiari said. “The communication station can be used to help students with language difficulties while on the playground, and it uses icons that students can point to in order to help them socialize with peers and adults.”
