Natural Changes Island. Hurricane Sandy effectively cleaned the area out, giving way to the rise of many species that signal a healthy ecosystem. On this preservation, the frog population is beginning to flourish. This is a good thing because the presence of frogs have always meant a thriving environment teeming with food, vegetation and most importantly, other healthy wildlife. Dolphins are becoming an ever-present fixture on our seashore. Even with the ongoing sickness that the dolphins must endure, their populations seem to be doing well, especially this close to shore. A few weeks
ago, a sea turtle was spotted as well. These unprecedented sightings have signaled a positive change in the way we treat Mother Nature. Even as these animals are around now, it is crucial to their survival that we protect them. In addition to looking after ourselves, we should take care of the rest of Long Island’s wildlife. Dose Of Nostalgia By: Jamie Lynn Ryan I haven’t watched the MTV Video Music Awards since … oh, probably around the time *NSYNC was still a certified group. So when word leaked out that they would be reuniting at this year’s ceremony in honor of Justin Timberlake receiving the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award, well, you can imagine the hysteria which erupted among their longtime fans. In the days leading up to the big broadcast, you couldn’t escape the rumor mill – on TV, radio,
newspapers and especially social media – all buzzing with the possibility of a few moments of nostalgia. Twenty and thirtysomethings were instantly transported back to their glory days – back when music was more about the melody than what the artist was (or wasn’t, as the case may be) wearing, the staging, the choreography and all that nonsense. Sure, *NSYNC may not be every musical connoisseur’s idea of a deep, meaningful musical experience – but considering some of what is out there on the charts
today, it’s certainly done a decent job of standing the test of time. And so we tuned in. And we waited. We were shocked by the spectacle of Lady Gaga, disgusted by the antics of Miley Cyrus, and generally perplexed by the direction music has gone in the last ten years. It was quite the hour to endure, to say the least. But then, at long last, there it was. 110 seconds of pure joy. Surrounded by about two hours of, well, the sort of indescribable train wreck that the MTV VMA’s has become. A brief reunion. But well worth the wait.

The annual event begins at 8:30 a.m. at Jones Beach, Field 5 in Wantagh. The non-competitive, three-mile walk includes teams of employees from local companies, along with friends and family members of all ages. “For every hour of brisk walking, life expectancy may increase for some adults by two hours,” said Mark S. Davis, Managing Partner of Deloitte’s Long Island location and Chairman of the Long Island Heart Walk. “As someone who lost his dad at a young age to heart disease, I am proud to help raise awareness and raise funds that will contribute to the goal of improving the cardiovascular health of the Long Island community. Adoption Training Program Islip Animal Shelter and Adopt-a-Pet Center has taken further strides to get their dogs adopted with the help of a new training program, implemented in May 2013. Selected dogs are trained by the guidelines of the Canine Good Citizen test; a test that demonstrates that a dog can behave appropriately in a public setting, around people, other dogs and
distractions. The training is conducted by a group of volunteers led by professional dog trainer Jen Towers of Lead the Pack Dog Training. Under her guidance, and with the help of shelter employees, the group has successfully found homes for 10 out of the 15 dogs that have participated in the program. “This program is so important for a shelter dog
because it significantly improves his or her chance for adoption. Having even the slightest bit of training gives that dog a big advantage over others that don’t,” said Councilwoman Trish Bergin Weichbrodt. “This gives us the opportunity to really showcase the dogs that have been otherwise overlooked.” The dogs selected for the program range in breed,
age, size, and duration of time they’ve been waiting at the shelter. Lucy, a five year old Pit Bull mix who has been waiting at the shelter close to three years for her new family, has become the star of the training program. “These dogs are all beautiful dogs that unfortunately get overlooked, whether it be because of breed, age or simply the fact that they’re
in the shelter. There are assumptions that they will not make good pets. This program helps prospective families see that any dog, even in such a stressful environment, can learn to be a great, well-mannered dog with a little extra love, attention, and hands-on training,” said Volunteer Coordinator Jen Towers. Town officials this month offered a view of the dogs in training on
