Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck is presenting Bradstock XXII, a two-day festival featuring live music and poetry on Saturday, September 5th, from noon to 8 p.m. and Sunday, September 6th, from noon to 9 p.m. A portion of the proceeds from the event will benefit the camp’s programs for children and young adults with special needs. The festival also has a personal connection for the camp’s Director, Bridget Costello, whose late brother-in-law Kevin “K.C.” Cowan performed with his band, K.C. and The Love Drops, at Bradstock every year until his passing in October 2011. Since moving the event to Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck grounds four years ago, Bradstock has raised more than $42,000 for the camp and its programs, which includes the music presentations held in K.C.’s honor. This year’s performers include Cassandra House, Funkin’ A, Miles to Dayton, Jellyband, Jerry McDonald, Ed Travers Band, Shecky and the Twangtones, Soundswell, David Amram, David Bromberg, The Falco Brothers, The Electrix, Kristen Maxwell and Hymn For Her. There is also a Poetry Stage on Sunday, where the area’s finest and most diverse poets will perform, as well as a Folk and Songwriters’ stage featuring the best local acoustic musical talent and the all new Flower Power Stage to allow for additional acts. Pre-sale tickets are available online for $50 per day, or $90 for both days; tickets can also be

purchased at the gate for $60 (cash only) each day. Festival organizers are also offering a Platinum Ticket Package online in advance of the event, which includes admission to both days of the festival, a Bradstock T-shirt, backstage access and more. Pending availability, the Platinum Package will be available at the door for $135. Camping space at the event can also be purchased online in conjunction with the Platinum, Combo and Sunday ticket options for an additional charge. While the festival will try to accommodate sameday camping requests, space is limited, so early registration is strongly recommended. All ticket and camping prices are listed as the pre-tax values. There will also be a 5K Trail Fun Run on Sunday, September 6th, open free of charge to any

Bradstock Set ticketholders. The race begins at 8:30 a.m. and takes participants through the wooded grounds of Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck. An Awards Ceremony will be held at 10 a.m. and all runners will receive a Bradstock XXII mug. Participants are invited to tour the grounds after the race, or return when the festival begins. To sign up, visitors must select the Trail Run option when purchasing their tickets. All Bradstock guests are cautioned not to remove their festival wristband if they plan to leave and reenter the camp grounds. Removal of the wristband will result in having to purchase an additional ticket to the performances. Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck is a resident summer camp serving children and young adults ages 6-21 with both physical and

Family Health Challenge It’s that time of the year when parents get ready for September, shop for backto-school supplies, and consider how it’s possible that their children’s feet grew that much in just a year. The American Heart Association (AHA) wants families to remember to also include healthy choices in their back-toschool plans, making sure that the healthy choice becomes the default choice at back-to-school time, and year-round. To help raise awareness and make parents and caregivers more conscious of their lifestyle choices during Childhood Obesity Awareness Month, the AHA is launching the Life is Why Family Health Challenge™. make small moderations in their lifestyle that will lead to bigger, heart-healthy changes down the road. Today, about one in three American kids is considered overweight or obese, and there has been a sharp rise in obesity-related problems in children like type 2 diabetes, which is usually seen only in adults. “When we look at heart disease statistics, the one that gets our attention is that 80 percent of heart disease and stroke can be prevented through simple lifestyle changes like eating healthy and exercising more,” said AHA Long Island Board President, Scott L. The Town of Islip recently launched a Pool Safety Poster Contest for children between the ages of four and eighteen, to help raise pool safety and drowning prevention awareness. Over 200 children participated in the contest, hoping to have their poster showcased in every Town of Islip Recreation Center, as well as used in the 2016 Pool Safety Brochure. at the August 25th Town Board Meeting. All those honored received a Town of Islip Certificate of Recognition and Islip Town pin, and the four winners received a $25 gift card to Target. Town of Islip Board Members met with the kids before the meeting to congratulate them and admire their 200+ posters hanging in the Islip Town Board Room for all to see. “We’re so happy that we had such an overwhelming response to this contest with over 200 entries,” said Islip Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter. “We know that over 200 children had a conversation with

their families or camp counselors about the importance of pool safety, and that is what is really important.” Supervisor Carpenter encouraged all who attended the meeting to take pool safety very seriously and always be cautious and mindful when at the pool. The idea for this contest came to life due to recent incidents, including the tragic drowning of a young girl. Each poster submitted helps to spread the message about precautions that everyone can practice to prevent further tragedies.

Summer’s Swan Song By: Jamie Lynn Ryan And there it is. Not two days into September, and the autumn zealots are out in force, proclaiming the “end” of summer to be upon us. Never mind the fact that the calendar still calls for a full three weeks of the season. Nope. Pack away the bathing suits, close up the pools, pay no mind to the warm radiance of the sun. Fall has arrived. Clearly, I’m not thrilled by this rush to transition. While I can appreciate the glory of autumn in all its splendor, I’m pretty sure that I recall there being many who spent the better part of last winter counting down the days to summer. What happened? Had

your fill of beautiful beach days? Grown tired of sunlit evenings and family barbecues in the backyard? I can understand the school year dictating some sort of routine for those still beholden to a bell schedule; but for the rest of us, there is simply no excuse to not savor these remaining weeks. “Summer vacation” may be over, but for those of us who haven’t been fortunate to take advantage of it, this is the prime time for long weekends and late afternoons spent soaking in the last rays of sunshine at the beach. The best part? While everyone else is off returning to his/her regularly scheduled

programs, the rest of us are left to enjoy the solitude. Not a bad tradeoff. If there is anything we have learned in recent years, it is that Mother Nature has infinitely more impact on our lives than the calendar year. We have had hurricanes at Halloween, snow for Thanksgiving and 70º days leading up to Christmas. You never can tell. But, in this case, the calendar says summer and the weather concurs. Savor it. Grab your bathing suit, pick up a few hot dogs and kick back in a lounge chair. Autumn will wait. In fact, I’m pretty sure it hasn’t even arrived yet.

Student Spotlight IT ALL STARTS WITH A SEED SUBMITTED BY: PHILIP LANZARONE, AGE 15, WEST ISLIP HIGH SCHOOL

One thing that has definitely puzzled my head is why the school year can seem to be so cyclic. It reaches the point where I am occasionally sickened by it. How does one make each day exciting? How can one feel motivated enough to awaken from bed and aspire? “Aspire to do what?” you might ask. Aspire to distinguish this day from others and consider it memorable. This will undoubtedly break that cycle and in fact inscribe a new tale into the course of one’s life. Distinction is key. Distinction is golden. If you need to ask how you can perform such a task, I will happily recommend what to do. These have certainly assisted me in differentiating one day from others. Firstly, be open to listening to others. If you shut out yourself from the rest of the world, you’ll feel confined and limited. If someone comes up to you and asks if you want to hang out with them - take that invitation. And if you are stuck on something and offered help, accept that person’s advice and see. Just see! Who knows? You might just bridge the gap between the first part and the second part.

The second part is to make more friends. You know, amigos, companions, even acquaintances. Call them whatever you’d like, as long as it’s appropriate. Just obtain a few. Also, be sure that they are true friends. By “true,” I mean that they are spending time with you because they are fond of you as a person. If they are with you only because they envy you for some of your possessions, then they are not true friends. Following the first two parts will lead one to the third and final part, which is to make light. Express levity whenever and wherever you can. Make jokes at the appropriate instances. This is helpful because one is always going to withstand pessimistic days and experience exuberant days. See? These three steps can aid in making school days and any day more excitingly different. If this has motivated you to take action and get on top of the cycle, give yourself small applause and two big thumbs up! Now, this all may sound well and good; however, only you can make it happen! So get up, vow to alter the chain of events for your greater benefit, and distinguish!

He participated on the school’s Science Olympiad team for four years, earning numerous medals at various competitions and serving as co-captain in his senior year. Uher is attending Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, New York this fall, studying aerospace engineering. “Trevor is a once-in-a-

lifetime student who truly enjoys learning science,” said Christiansen. “He constantly pushes himself to the next level to make sure that he truly gets the concept and to learn beyond what is being taught in the lesson. He is a tremendous leader, both inside and outside the classroom.” Christiansen himself was also honored with a service award by STANYS, for his exemplary work in revamping the Suffolk Section website. Christiansen, Mennecke and Uher were all honored at the Suffolk Section’s 40th annual awards dinner, held on May 20th at Villa Lombardi’s in Holbrook, receiving received engraved plaques to commemorate their achievements. “It was a great night of awards where truly outstanding students and teachers were recognized for four years of hard work,” said Brian Vorwald, co-chairperson of the event. “Suffolk County and all of Long Island have made tremendous strides in science.”

The Town of Islip recently launched a Pool Safety Poster Contest for children between the ages of four and eighteen, to help raise pool safety and drowning prevention awareness. Over 200 children participated in the contest, hoping to have their poster showcased in every Town of Islip Recreation Center, as well as used in the 2016 Pool Safety Brochure. The entries were divided into four age categories. Each category had one winner and most had honorable mention recipients as well. A total of nine children were selected and honored

The Science Teachers Association of New York State recently honored Islip High School with three awards recognizing success in the sciences, showcasing the school’s continued efforts in promoting excellence in science education for their students and faculty. Islip High School teacher Wayne Mennecke received the Suffolk Section High School Science Teacher of the Year award, one of only three teachers in Suffolk to be honored with this recognition.
