An eclipse, a fox and a whale … what’s next? A zebra? These were the words overheard at Robert Moses Field 5 on the afternoon of Monday, August 21st, spoken by a little boy as he incredulously recounted the events of the day. Nearly 30 years his senior, I have to say I shared the sentiment. What started as a somewhat spontaneous vacation day to spend relaxing on the beach, perhaps catching a glimpse of the highly publicized 70% of a solar eclipse, turned into a relative bucket list of random natural sightings the likes of which couldn’t have been better orchestrated if one tried. After stealing a look at the crescent of golden light as the sky subtlety darkened around us, we decided it was only slightly as impressive as promised. The reactions from those on the surrounding beach blankets ranged from, Oh wow, that was incredible! to Wait, which end is it eclipsing from?
I don’t see anything? Luckily for them, the afternoon promised more stellar sights to behold. As the sun began peeking out once again, a commotion erupted up on the sand behind us, as a small crowd gathered around what at first glance appeared to be a stray dog. Upon further inspection, it proved to be a small furry fox, munching on a bagel, as he calmly eyed the growing swarm of beachgoers. He then trotted down the beach, bouncing from one blanket to the next, pausing under one woman’s umbrella as she sat engrossed in a book. Eventually, someone summoned a lifeguard, who determined that this particular fox was most likely a few years old and, though seemed friendly, was probably best left alone in pursuit of his dinner. As the crowd gradually dispersed, the sound of applause was heard down by the water. We turned to see everyone facing west, lifeguards included,
eyes fixated on something in the ocean. What now, is someone drowning? one lady was heard muttering. Well, I doubt the lifeguards would be standing applauding if that was the case, her husband retorted. As we made our way down to the shoreline, we saw a giant spray of water shoot up from the horizon, followed by a humpback whale flipping through the air and disappearing below the surf. Again, the crowd cheered. And again, the whale leapt into the air, as if taking a bow. I grabbed my phone and attempted to capture the sight, only to find myself filming several minutes of motionless water. But then, at last, he emerged once more. Out for yet another encore. As we headed back to our beach blanket, we passed the little boy as he breathlessly encapsulated the day’s happenings. I have to say, I half expected a zebra to come barreling over the sand dunes. It was that kind of afternoon.

In advance of today’s announcement, the Suffolk County Parks Department has begun posting signs about the program and ways in which visitors can provide tips to authorities. Beyond new signs, the Parks Department will also begin a social media and public awareness campaign to highlight the importance of this new program and of protecting our public lands from illegal and potentially toxic debris. “We are pleased to be able to add another layer of protection for our parks,” Parks Commissioner
Philip Berdolt said. “With the assistance of our park patrons, we will be able to reduce instances of vandalism, dumping and other misuses, and ensure that people can use the parks safely.” “Parks Watch” was created through Resolution 37-2017, sponsored by Legislator Kara Hahn, Chairwoman of the Legislature’s Parks and Recreation Committee, and follows the discoveries of illegal dumping and vandalism within several Long Island parks including Suffolk’s West Hills County Park. “Illegal dumping
threatens every Suffolk County resident’s quality of life, therefore, it is quite fitting that with the support of parks users, neighbors and community partners we will ‘rid’ our public lands of this degradation,” said Legislator Hahn. “Suffolk’s ‘Parks Watch’ Program not only offers County parks personnel and investigators a new tool to monitor for illegal dumping and vandalism, but also encourages our residents – the men, women and children these lands were acquired for - to be part of the protection of our shared treasures.” “I am proud to be a

Going Above and Beyond Teachers provide many things to their students. In addition to an education, support and guidance, many teachers also feel compelled to enhance their classrooms with supplies they’ve purchased out-of-pocket. According to a poll of 1,500 teachers conducted by the educational resource Edutopia, 93 percent of teachers feel obligated or somewhat obligated to buy school supplies for their
classrooms with their own money. The Education Market Association says that virtually all teachers wind up paying out of pocket for supplies. The amounts spent annually can be upwards of $1,000 per teacher. In addition, not all of the teachers funding supplies work in low-income districts. A report published in early 2016 by the Center for Budget and Policy Priorities found that
many states now provide less financial support per student than they did before the recession took hold roughly nine years ago. Districts forced to work under tight budgets are increasingly outsourcing the costs of supplies to parents. When parents fail to provide supplies, teachers are bearing the brunt of the costs to avoid seeing their students go without necessary resources.

Traffic Safety Star Kathryn Sawtelle, a second-grader at East Islip’s Connetquot Elementary School, won first place in the annual AAA Traffic Safety Poster Contest for her poster “Don’t Be a Fuddy Duddy, Have a Street Buddy.” After a rigorous judging process, Sawtelle’s poster was chosen out of more than 600 entries in the grade
K-2 Pedestrian and Child Passenger Safety category. The poster contest, part of art teacher Christina SperaBartlett’s curriculum for second-grade classes at Connetquot, helped to promote and raise awareness of traffic safety as well as introduce the topic of how to create an effective poster using art
techniques. “All of the students worked very hard for many weeks on their poster entries and should feel very proud of their effort,” said Spera-Bartlett. “Kathryn’s design and message stood out to the judges and therefore kept moving up in the judging process, landing her in first place.” A special luncheon was

Softball Season Wraps Up East Islip High School’s softball team wrapped up a remarkable year in which the Lady Redmen won the Suffolk County championship and were just two outs away from winning the Long Island championship. As a team, they broke the school record for home runs (26), wins (23), batting average (.397), runs (246), doubles (52), walks (93) and RBI (212). All-County pitcher Courtney Greene, a recent graduate from the Class of 2017, had one of the best overall seasons in the history of East Islip softball. She finished her senior season with a 20-2 record, broke a school record with 220 strikeouts in 144 innings, and earned a 0.78 ERA. She had an outstanding 12 shutouts this season, including three in the postseason, where she won five games and struck out 69 batters. Based on her efforts this season, she was named Large School Pitcher of the Year, All-Long Island and Newsday Long Island Player of the Year. Offensively, she had a terrific year batting in the cleanup spot. She set a new school record by batting .519 – including 40 hits, 37 RBI, eight home runs and six doubles – and struck out only five times in 85 at-bats. Greene batted .500 in the playoffs, logging two home runs and 12 RBI. Greene will take her skills to the next level playing at Molloy College this fall. “Courtney’s three-run home run against Deer Park in the county final, that put East Islip up by one run, will go down as one of the biggest home runs East Islip softball has ever seen,” said coach Jason McGowan, who was named League VI coach of the year. All-County and All-Long Island shortstop and senior captain Jackie Carty had a tremendous year. Batting third in the lineup, she finished with a batting average
of .500, earning nine home runs, eight doubles and eight stolen bases, and striking out just six times in 100 atbats. Her achievement of 42 runs, 43 hits and 44 RBI made her East Islip’s first-ever member of the exclusive “40-40” club. Carty turned it up a notch in the playoffs, going 10 for 18 with eight runs, two home runs and 13 RBI in six games. A three-sport athlete, Carty will play soccer at Molloy College this fall. “Jackie has broken most of the offensive categories
here at East Islip and she will be tough to replace,” said McGowan. “She is one of the best athletes ever to come out of this high school, particularly as a soccer goalie, where she is regarded as one of the best in the state.” Junior Alise Colandro, a two-time All-County catcher, had another big season. She batted .442 this season, scored 31 runs, had 34 hits and 14 RBI. Batting second in the lineup, Colandro stepped up her game in the playoffs, hitting .450 with nine hits and scoring nine runs in six games.
“Alise was a vocal leader and caught a no-hitter and 12 shutouts,” said McGowan. “Blessed with a strong arm and a quick release, only three base runners stole on her all year. We look forward to Alise leading us again next season.” Fellow junior Katie Burk, the team’s third baseman and junior captain, had a breakout season, committing only three errors all season and playing every inning of every game. Offensively, she had a monster year, hitting .451 with three home runs, 37 hits, six doubles and 25 RBI, and was a clutch player in the playoffs, hitting .409 with five runs scored and 8 RBI. “Katie is one of the best defensive third basemen in the county,” said McGowan. “She possesses soft hands and a rifle as an arm.” Sophomore Allison Dell’Orto earned All-League honors this season and was named to the All-Tournament team. She batted .402 with 34 runs scored, 35 hits, nine doubles and 17 walks. She batted a team-high .500 in the playoffs. Freshman left fielder Lauren Crawford was also named to the All-Tournament team for her performance during the year, which included 29 runs, 29 hits, 23 RBI and 13 walks. Crawford had a .387 batting average for the Lady Redmen this season, including .474 in the playoffs.
