downtown Central Islip on Carleton Avenue at the intersection of Smith Street. Currently, there is no signage or landscape element indicating the entrance to the traditional downtown area. Decorative lighting and brick pavers will be installed at each of the four corners. The southwest corner of Smith Street will feature a landscape element that will include two flag poles, a “Welcome to Downtown Central Islip” sign, and brick columns with decorative fencing. The Town of Islip will provide matching funds to

complete the project. “I am very happy to once again secure funding for our downtown redevelopment/ beautification projects in the 9th Legislative District,” Montano said. “By ensuring continued representation from our district on the Downtown Revitalization Citizens Advisory Panel, we can continue to secure funds and invest in our community.” Nancy Manfredonia, Executive Director of the Central Islip Civic Council said “Everyone is looking forward to this great new gateway to our downtown!”

Cleanups can take place anytime within the last two weeks of September with every effort made to give volunteers their first choice of location. “The ICC is the only international event that I know of that scientifically analyzes information collected by volunteers,” said Nancy Cochran, Executive Director of Keep Islip Clean. Summer’s Sunset By: Jamie Lynn Ryan And just like that, Labor Day is upon us. The muchmaligned “Last Weekend Of Summer,” even though summer won’t, in actuality, end for nearly another month. But in a society dictated by the school calendar, apparently we must all take our cues from those less-than-thrilled students returning to the classroom and collectively mourn over those last golden beach days, that final holiday BBQ… and let’s not forget to whisk away any remaining traces of white clothing, the ultimate “fall” faux pas. (If only it was actually fall!) It’s funny, as much as we all anticipate summer each

year, I would be willing to bet that most of us did not do half of what we planned to over these last three months. Head to the beach every weekend? Doubtful. Plan BBQs and boat trips and day trips to Montauk and Fire Island? Maybe one, here and there. A few stolen moments is all we ever seem to get between work and daily responsibilities and prior commitments – even the children, supposedly the ones with all the free time these days, seem to be stretched thin with all their extracurricular activities, youth sports and play dates. When is there time for fun? But maybe the key to fun is to remain busy, to fill our days with enough activities

and people to make the time fly, to enjoy while being super-productive… and then to share every moment on Facebook and Instagram of course! (Because really, if it’s not posted on some sort of social media outlet, did it really happen??) Seems to work for most people – in this generation anyway. And with that, we bid adieu to the sun and surf, to long hours of daylight, to warm summer nights and all the excitement that comes with living on Long Island at this time of year. But don’t worry – the calendar says we still have a little time left to savor those last golden days. Be sure to make them count.

Assisted by volunteers, the 3rd Annual Grounds for Change gardens were planted at East Islip Middle School earlier this summer, sponsored by the EJ Autism Foundation, a local organization that continually works to benefit special needs children. Grounds for Change consists of over a dozen organic garden beds housing a variety of vegetables and herbs donated by Bonnie Farms and Father Nature’s Garden Center. The gardens were planted by East Islip School District students with disabilities and maintained by East Islip Middle School family and consumer science teacher Patricia EmmonsFritz. “These school gardens are not just our outside classrooms, but serve as a terrific way to bring people together,” said Linda J. Rozzi, East Islip’s superintendent of schools. “Just seeing these students take ownership of garden cultivation every week during the summer months is inspiring.” “The Grounds for Change gardens were inspired by our children in the district with disabilities who grow in so many ways

with the right support and services,” explained EJ Autism founder Bea Huste-Petersen. “Ideally, we have typical children paired with our kids with disabilities, certainly during the planting phase. Over the summer, the students work with teachers and their aides in weeding, watering and spraying soapy water to ward off bugs. Vegetables that are grown are donated locally, and during the school year, the kids in our life skills program practice their cooking skills.
