PSEG Long Island’s Summer Food Collection Initiative
PSEG Long Island and Island Harvest Food Bank are kicking off PSEG Long Island’s third annual Power to Feed Long Island summer-long food drive initiative.
Continuing through Sept. 22 – the last full day
of summer – collection drives will be set up at six supermarkets across Long Island, where community members can donate nonperishable food and essential care items. This year’s goal is to collect the equivalent of 50,000
healthy, nutritious meals for Long Islanders facing food insecurity.
Online donations are being accepted throughout the campaign at psegliny. com/feedli. Island Harvest estimates each dollar donated provides roughly two meals.
“We created PSEG Long Island’s Power to Feed Long Island as a way to provide a venue for people to help people. In the past two years, hundreds of Long Islanders have donated online and brought bags, carts and trunks filled with thousands of pounds of food to our collection sites to support the initiative,” said David Lyons, interim president and COO, PSEG Long Island. “Our goal this summer is to collect the equivalent of 50,000 meals because there is still hunger in every ZIP code. PSEG Long Island is committed to playing an active role in improving the communities we serve. We are proud to
partner with Island Harvest and our supermarket partners for the third year to help put food on the tables of families in our communities who need it.”
Hundreds of thousands of Long Island families struggle with hunger and food insecurity throughout the year. During the summer months, there is a significant reduction in food donations to local food banks, pantries and other programs. Compounding the issue, children are not in school where they can receive free or reducedcost breakfast and lunch. In addition, the pandemic and increased inflation rate continue to strain local food pantries and emergency feeding programs served by Island Harvest.
“Island Harvest Food Bank is grateful to our valued partners, PSEG Long Island, for hosting the third annual Power to Feed Long Island food collection event to help address the critical shortage of food through the summer months for people facing food insecurity,” said Randi Shubin Dresner, president and CEO of Island Harvest Food Bank. “With school feeding programs halted for the summer break, families already struggling to make ends meet are faced with additional challenges, and the support of PSEG Long Island, Stop & Shop, and the generosity of their customers will help ease that burden.”

encouraged to come to the collection sites and donate nonperishable food items. Collection bins and a drivethru, drop-off option will be available at each location.

Nonperishable food: Healthy varieties of canned foods, such as low-sodium beans, vegetables, soups, pasta sauces and tomato varieties, tuna and chicken, rice, pasta, nut butters, olive and canola oil, spices and pet food (no glass containers please).
Household essentials: Toilet paper, paper towels, hand sanitizer, laundry detergent and dish soap.
Personal care items: Toothpaste, toothbrushes, deodorant, soap, shampoo, conditioner, feminine care products and shaving products, antibacterial wipes and washcloths.
Baby care items: Diapers, wipes, formula, creams, ointments and baby wash.

WWII Veteran Warren James Turns 100
Town Councilman John C. Cochrane, Jr., retired US Navy Captain and Chairman of Islip Town Veterans’ Advisory Board, recently met with our Town’s newest centenarian, World War II Veteran, Warren James, to congratulate him on his milestone 100th birthday.
Born in 1923, Warren enlisted to serve in the United States Coast Guard in December of 1941, and would serve on the USS Mistletoe (WAGL-237) coastal buoy tender stationed in the Hampton Roads area. After receiving transfer to the USS Eugene (PF-40) Tacoma class frigate, he entered the Pacific Theater aboard the ship that would
later earn two World War II battle stars.
While transporting wounded from the battle of the Philippines, the USS Eugene caught fire, but was saved along with its occupants by the dedicated efforts of the crew in which Warren served. Transferred once more to the USS Lansing (DE-388), he would continue to serve with dedication through to the remainder of World War II.
“Warren James belongs to that special group in our Nation’s history,” said Islip Councilman John C. Cochrane Jr. “Part of the greatest generation, his efforts during the War contributed to the
protection of the Pacific that helped save lives and enable the U.S. and Allied Forces to emerge victorious. We wish him nothing but peace and happiness on this milestone birthday achievement,” the councilman added.
After the war, Mr. James returned to Long Island and worked for the Fair Harbor Ferry Company, serving as a dock hand and captain. His love for the ocean led him to move to Lonelyville on Fire Island, where he would further serve his community as both Water Commissioner and Fire Commissioner.

“Long Island Cars” Super Swap Sunday CAR SHOW & SWAP MEET Sunday August 20th
In recent years, interest in custom and collectible cars has grown dramatically. It’s hard to say precisely when auto collecting began, a few older car clubs began in the 1930s. “Long Island Cars” is one of the groups that wanted to preserve the history and fun of car collecting; promoting the auto hobby for over 40 years on Long Island. Join in the camaraderie and attend Long Island Cars “Super Swap Sunday” Car Show and Swap Meet on Sunday, August
20th at Flowerfield Fairgrounds on Parkside Dr. in Saint James. Flowerfield Fairgrounds, once a turn-of-the-century flower farm, is the site where countless auto enthusiasts will come together to display their cars and swap car parts. Classic and collectible automobiles including show cars from the 50s, 60s, and 70s, one-of-a-kind custom cars, antiques, exotics, street rods, muscle cars, and imports will be competing in classed judging with trophies. The event
will also include Long Island Cars signature swap meet with wellstocked vendors offering older parts, literature, accessories, and collectibles for swap and sale. If you are looking to buy a collectible car, check out the car for sale section where owners will be selling cars directly to the public. You’ll experience live music by “The Fugitives”, fun fair food, and more. Flowerfield Fairgrounds is located on Parkside Drive off Route 25A in St. James. L.I.E. 62
