Revitalization Grant Received Governor Andrew M. Cuomo recently announced that the Central Islip community will receive $10 million in funding as the Long Island winner of the third round of the Downtown Revitalization Initiative. “This investment will deliver a significant boost not only to Central Islip’s growing downtown community, but to the entire Long Island economy,” Governor
Cuomo said. “I commend the community’s leaders for developing projects that envision a stronger, more sustainable economy that will drive further economic development in and around Islip’s downtown for generations to come.” Town of Islip Supervisor Angie M. Carpenter said, “I am grateful for the governor’s confidence and investment in this community, and for
recognizing all the great things Central Islip has to offer. By working together with local stakeholders, we will develop a plan that will affect the kind of positive change of which we can all be proud. Even through unthinkable adversity, the residents of Central Islip have proven themselves to be strong, resilient, and willing to work for the betterment of their community against all challenges. I look
forward to implementing the $10 million award and moving projects forward to enhance our downtown for generations of families to enjoy.” As in the first two rounds of the DRI, one municipality from each of the state’s 10 regional economic development regions is selected as a $10 million winner, marking another overall state goal to target $100 million in funding and investments
to help communities boost their economies by transforming downtowns into vibrant neighborhoods where the next generation of New Yorkers will want to live, work and raise a family. Central Islip is a diverse economic and residential community with more than one-third of its population represented by ethnic minorities. As a result of this varied economy and increasing
residential population, downtown Central Islip is on the verge of becoming a vibrant transit-oriented epicenter for the entire Islip community. DRI funds will be used to leverage the state’s investment in the LIRR Third Track and Double Track projects by promoting transit development and downtown revitalization adjacent to the Central Islip

Beginnings Birthdays are beginnings. This is a sentiment I have always held particularly close to my heart, if for no other reason than it allows for the momentary illusion of a fresh start, at least for one day. What evolves beyond that point in time is anyone’s guess of course; but the symbolic turning of the page is one that resonates quite deeply for me. This year’s birthday falls within an interval of time that is especially significant, the start of a completely new chapter in my life. After 13 years as editor of South Bay’s Neighbor Newspapers and Seasons Magazine, I will be leaving my position to pursue a new adventure at the close of the month, taking my love of writing to the next level and exploring the vast opportunities that await just around the bend. Change is never easy, least of all for someone with my affinity for routine and structure; but, as with all things, sometimes fate takes a hand and points you in a direction you never thought possible. Time, as we know, is one of life’s most precious commodities. As much as we would like to believe there will always be another chance to embark on a particular journey
or pursue a particular dream, the simple fact is that we can never be certain. The time is now, always. I have countless fond memories of my years working here at the old “South Bay” paper that I grew up reading, which I will touch on in more detail as the weeks progress. For now, though, suffice it to say that I am extremely grateful for the chance I was given to show my worth as a fresh-faced college graduate all those years ago. What began as a first step to “get a foot in the door” turned into a huge portion of my career, during which I was able to grow and flourish. My nearly 700 In Step columns stand as the biggest testament to the incredible support I have received from my co-workers, family and friends - and, perhaps most importantly, from those readers who have turned into loyal followers and fans. You have all come along for this journey, week after week, and for that I am forever thankful. Milestones have come and gone, as the columns have accumulated and the memories have been stored away for safekeeping between the lines of type. Along the way, the
particular numbers have gotten miscalculated and misplaced; but now, as I approach the final stretch, I felt an official “count” was in order. To my surprise - and delight, given how I began this particular selection, I will finish my tenure here with precisely 681 columns - my birthdate {8/16} “boxed,” if you will, for those familiar with gambling terminology. A fitting end, if you ask me. And with that, one more column in the books, three remaining - I would like to ask you, readers, for your feedback on what have been some of your favorites through the years, the topics and tales that stood above the rest. Your input has always been appreciated, and has been noted in many of my narratives over time. The stories may have been my own, but the writing was always for you. I look forward to reading your thoughts, and to taking you on my journey as I continue to contribute columns from time to time to my own personal website, SnapshotsAndSilhouettes.com. ’Til next time, may tomorrow’s birthday be just the beginning of a beautiful new chapter.

Continued From 5 · The downtown is able to capitalize on prior or catalyze future private and public investment in the neighborhood and its surrounding areas; · There should be recent or impending job growth within, or in close proximity to the downtown that can attract workers to the downtown, support redevelopment and make growth sustainable; · The downtown must be an attractive and livable community for diverse populations of all ages, including existing residents, millennials and skilled workers; · The municipality should already embrace or have the ability to create and implement policies that increase livability and quality of life, including the use of local land banks, modern zoning codes and parking standards, complete streets plans, energy efficient projects, green jobs, and transitoriented development; · The municipality should have conducted an open and robust community engagement process resulting in a vision for downtown revitalization and a preliminary list of projects and initiatives that may be included in a DRI strategic investment plan; and · The municipality has identified transformative projects that will be ready for implementation with an infusion of DRI funds within the first one to two years. Islip’s third round DRI win entitles it to receive $10 million in state funding and investments to revitalize its downtown neighborhoods and generate new opportunities for longterm growth. Islip now joins Westbury and Hicksville, which were
the Long Island region’s winners in the first and second DRI rounds, respectively. “The Downtown Revitalization Initiative is investing in communities to help grow their downtowns and pursue local projects as part of the Regional Economic Development Councils,” said Lieutenant Governor Kathy Hochul. “This funding to revitalize Central Islip’s diverse community will enhance transportation and revitalize the downtown area, attracting more visitors and businesses to Central Islip and boosting the local economy.” Empire State Development President, CEO & Commissioner Howard Zemsky said, “The Downtown Revitalization Initiative will infuse Central Islip with the resources needed to create transformative community-based economic development with critical investments in transit, infrastructure, quality of life and livability. The DRI represents tremendous opportunities for smart, strategic, sustainable growth in Central Islip that lay a strong foundation for generations of New Yorkers across the Long Island region.” New York Secretary of State Rossana Rosado said, “Governor Cuomo’s Downtown Revitalization Initiative continues to deliver hope and promise to communities across the state. Central Islip is a critical juncture for all of Long Island, and targeted, smart investments will help the downtown thrive and better serve its residents, businesses and visitors.” New York State Homes and Community Renewal Commissioner RuthAnne Visnauskas said, “With this

An investment in this community is exactly what we need and will have long term economic effects that will impact every citizen. Creating a walkable downtown district with upgraded infrastructure and new developments
for both residential and commercial buildings will create a vibrant, safe atmosphere for residents and visitors to enjoy.” Suffolk County Legislator Monica Martinez said, “This muchdeserved investment is exactly the kind of support Central Islip needs to raise the bar and develop the area’s downtown for the next generation of New Yorkers. Under the Governor’s leadership, Suffolk County is flourishing and Long Island is welcoming more visitors than ever before. With this investment, I look forward to a stronger, more viable Islip economy for years to come.” Islip will soon begin the process of developing a Strategic Investment Plan to revitalize its downtown with up to $300,000 in planning funds from the $10 million DRI grant. A Local Planning Committee made up of municipal representatives, community leaders, and other stakeholders will lead the effort, supported by a team of private sector experts and state planners. The Strategic Investment Plan for Central Islip will examine local assets and opportunities and identify economic development, transportation, housing, and community projects that align with the community’s vision for downtown revitalization and that are poised for implementation. The Central Islip Strategic Investment Plan will guide the investment of DRI grant funds in revitalization projects that will advance the community’s vision for its downtown and that can leverage and expand upon the state’s $10 million investment. Plans for the DRI’s third round will be complete in 2019.

Top Honors Islip Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter congratulated Town Clerk Olga Murray, and Deputy Town Clerk Patricia Curci on the office’s recent recognition from the Department of State. The Islip Town Clerks’ office, specifically Patricia Curci, Deputy Town Clerk, was awarded an Outstanding Acceptance Facility Oversight Review for maintaining compliance with all regulations as required by the Passport Agent’s Reference Guide. The Islip Town Clerk’s office facilitated over 3,000 passports in 2017, up 33%
from 2016. The office processed exactly 3,246 passports in 2017, and is on track to see a 30% increase in 2018 as well. “Our staff has been working tirelessly on the increased customer service needs due to the rising passport demands,” said Town Clerk Olga Murray. “The success of the program is due to the leadership of Deputy Town Clerk, Patricia Curci,” added the Town Clerk. The Department of State report noted that the Islip Town Clerk’s staff “… displayed a sincere and earnest dedication to the passport program...” “I’m grateful for
this award,” said Deputy Town Clerk Patricia Curci. We have a dedicated staff, many of whom are bilingual, and we take great pride in the level of customer service our office provides,” she added. “The Town’s passport facility recently began offering evening hours to accommodate the working population,” said Islip Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter. The Town Clerk, Deputy and their staff are truly deserving of this special recognition,” she said.
