are some perks you simply can’t put a price on. As often as I think I am paying way too much to live in my one bedroom apartment, when I take a look at the pristine grounds surrounding me, I realize I wouldn’t have it any other way. Nearly five years later, my little haven is quite completely furnished, and I have accumulated enough seasonal decor to last a lifetime, maybe two. Closet space… well, that’s another matter entirely. To think I have managed to fill every square inch of available storage in such a short span of time; well, it’s really pretty impressive (said she sheepishly). First item on the autumn “To Do” list: purge those closets, drawers and unreachable shelves of anything unnecessary. Consolidate, donate; whatever it takes to create a little more

breathing room. And stay away from those sales, more importantly, or we’ll be right back in the same boat a few months down the line. Perhaps my favorite space of all, though, is my little outdoor deck. While the view consists mainly of a parking lot and other surrounding apartments, I have made it my mission to fill the area with plants in every corner, twinkly white lights, solar garden ornaments - and of course my aqua-colored Adirondack chairs, the perfect accessory for all seasons. Many a summer day has been spent lounging here, listening to the sounds of birds chirping in the nearby tree, squirrels scurrying to and fro and watching the sun’s glow rise and fall as the hours pass. Living on Long Island… it ain’t for everyone, to be sure but I wouldn’t have it any other way.

A Dedicated Mechanic Recent East Islip graduate Connor Ennis is well on his way to becoming a master mechanic, utilizing the school’s rigorous technology classes to springboard his skills and passion for repairs. A member of East Islip’s Class of 2017, Ennis began enrolling in technology classes as soon as he entered 10th grade, the first year that students can begin these classes. During the next three years, he took every tech class taught by teacher Chad Spruyt, including basic and advanced wood

shop and metal shop as well as basic automotive, where he fell in love with working with small engines. He then enrolled in advanced automotive, and began using more advanced machines as well as working on bigger motors such as go-karts, minibikes, and trikes. He rebuilt, sanded and painted an old Mercedes; made tire and oil changes; lifted a Jeep three inches; and was even called on to make machine spacers for the district’s buildings and grounds department. “Connor found his passion and it was the

PIRATE FESTIVAL - Islip Town Councilwoman Trish Bergin Weichbrodt joined News 12 anchor Erin Colton and Suffolk County Legislator Tom Cilmi as judges at the annual Fire Island Pirate Festival, where local restaurants competed against each other to raise money for Southside Hospital in Bay Shore.

The Town of Islip’s Office of Emergency Management recently held a hurricane preparedness forum at the Islip Fire House. Town personnel were joined by representatives of the Long Island Red Cross and the Suffolk County FRES Department (Fire,

Rescue, and Emergency Services). Several speakers educated the participants on the importance of having a plan in the event of an emergency, and the lessons learned from past hurricanes that can save lives and property in the future.

“Here in Islip we are taking a very proactive stance in getting our residents prepared for natural disasters and other emergencies,” said Islip Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter.

Light Keepers Behind the Scenes Tour Saturday, September 9th, at 9 a.m. Follow one of our present day Lighthouse Keepers on his rounds. This bottom to top tour takes you from the auxiliary generator and the Light Keepers workshop in the basement of the Keeper’s Quarters to the beacon in the lantern room of the lighthouse tower. Learn how lighthouse Keepers in the 1860’s to 2017 maintained the light. This event includes a tour of the Lens Building

and the Boat House. The tour takes approximately two and a half hours. The fee is $15 for FILPS Members, and $20 for non-members. ASSET Scholarship Islip High School graduate Kyle Sapia, a member of the school’s Class of 2017, was recently named a recipient of the 2017 Association of Suffolk Supervisors for Educational Technology scholarship.
