Rebuilding Together Long Island is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization. They are an affiliate of the national organization, Rebuilding Together. They provide free home repairs to the frail and elderly, our veterans, people with d i s a b i l i t i e s and families with children. Those who receive the free home repairs must have met their financial criteria. Their mission as an organization is to repair homes, revitalize communities and rebuild lives and they help Long Island’s economicallydisadvantaged homeowners so they can live in comfort and safety while maintaining their independence (RTLI does not service the Hamptons).

RTLI was founded in 1992 by a small group of volunteers that were eager to help needy homeowners. Today they have one paid employee and 200 volunteers, which are the heart and soul of their organization. Their experienced volunteers perform the vast majority of the work they do and they come from all walks of life.

This organization performs repairs including carpentry, electrical, plumbing and home modifications (including wheelchair ramps for the physically challenged), weatherization, installation of smoke alarms, back and front yard clean-ups and more. Since 1992 they have provided repairs to over 2,600 homeowners in need at a current pace of over 150 projects annually within Nassau and Suffolk.

Seeing improvement in the lives of Long Island residents is truly what makes all the hard-work from this organization worth it. With the support of all of their many volunteers and partners, Rebuilding Together Long Island has become a wellregarded organization, recognized for their work with rehabbing houses, the building and installation of ramps for those in need and their involvement with communities and organizations that span across Long Island. They need your help to keep up the momentum!

There are four main ways you can get involved with their organization: 1) Volunteer. They are looking for volunteers to work hands on with a crew performing home repair work. Individuals do not have to have specific handyman skills, training is available. All volunteers must be at least 18 years old. Additionally, they are looking for a licensed Plumber or

Members of East Islip High School’s Interact Club were recently honored by the Rotary Club of the Islips at the organization’s meeting at the Irish Coffee Pub, with Rotary Club President Dennis Ciano congratulating the students for their “service above self.”

Interact Club members perform community service activities and work with Rotarians to complete local projects throughout the year.

This past school year, the students and Rotarians planted a vegetable garden at Brookwood Hall. Members of both clubs are tending the gardens and the vegetables will be donated to a local food pantry.

“The photo was taken from the first roll of film that Taylor shot last fall,” said photographer teacher Joy Taylor. “Her assignment was texture, and this print stood out to me immediately as an exceptional darkroom print. I loved the simple subject matter as well as the composition. The judges commented on the tonality and range of dark and light and mentioned how Taylor was able to create a very successful print despite the difficulty of manipulating prints created in a traditional darkroom setting. I’m very proud of Taylor.”

“When I first took this photo at the beginning of the school year, I never imagined I would win a contest like this,” said Edel.

“I’m very thankful to receive this honor.”

Middle Schoolers Meet Successful Speaker

Islip Middle School students in the EXCEL program recently had the chance to improve their speaking skills and discuss finding future careers with motivational speaker and Strategy of Success founder Brian Cohen as part of the ongoing “Inventing Self” series of inspirational guest lectures.

Group to form the Long Island Speakers Bureau, a company that provides professional presenters, also does everything from stand-up comedy and radio hosting to communication coaching and singing with an orchestra.

He told the students, “If you love what you do, from a career standpoint, you never have to go to work, because you’re always doing

Cohen asked them if any of them knew what they wanted to do for a future career and discussed the law of attraction.

“You will attract things that are appropriate to what you whatever your goal is,” he said. “It’s a concept, a theory more than a law, but it really works.”

SUMMER SPECIALS

South Oaks Hospital employees participated in a Habitat for Humanity build in Central Islip on June 28. The home was being constructed for a single mother of two teenage boys.

The South Oaks team consisted of Carolyn Sweetapple, PhD, RN, CPA, the hospital’s executive director, as well as other senior leadership staff including physicians, nurses and social workers. Despite the scorching sun and high humidity, the team’s spirits

were lifted knowing that they were helping a family in need.

“We want to increase our visibility in the community and give back to the people we serve,” said Dr. Sweetapple. “Participating in this home-building project also provided our hospital staff with an opportunity to get to know one another outside of the workplace in a different environment.

In lifting heavy lumber and helping to build the upper floor of the home, we

realized that the sum of our parts – each of us working together – was greater than one.”

“It is our mission to look after the mental health and well-being of each of our patients,” said Dr. Sweetapple.

“By participating in a community service project with Habitat for Humanity, it is a reminder about how having the security of a home provides children with a much-needed, stable environment.”

Jon LaRochester was recently named principal of Islip High School, replacing Michael Mosca.

LaRochester had served for the past six years as assistant principal at John F. Kennedy High School in the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District. He previously worked as a social studies teacher and AP psychology and senior seminar

instructor at Bethpage High School.

A resident of Centereach, LaRochester earned his bachelor’s degree in history with secondary education certificate from St. Joseph’s College, a master’s degree in adolescent education and professional diploma in educational technology and integration from Dowling College, and a school

A Pair Of Prestigious Awards AnnMarie Mills of Islip Middle School recently won the Suffolk County Science Teachers Association’s Middle School Teacher of the Year award as well as the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Presidential Innovation Award for Environmental Educators.

Mills recently completed the Greentree Foundation Teacher’s Ecology Workshop, developing a maturecentered outdoor classroom science curriculum which incorporated local ecosystems in all units as well as emphasizing the importance of regular outdoor learning. She also adopted a place-based education philosophy in which students use Long Island ecology and environmental issues as

primary learning resources for learning. She collaborated with Molloy College and CERCOM’s Crab Club to raise five juvenile horseshoe crabs in her classroom and worked with the Seatuck Environmental Foundation to allow students to raise and release quail chicks.

Mills has offered Islip’s students numerous exciting field trips, fostering a love of science, including a “A Day in the Life of the River” at Babylon’s Carlls River, “Fall into Nature” at Seatuck, a marine biology fishing trip in the Great South Bay, a “floating classroom” at the School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences in Southampton, and Molloy College’s Women in Science Conference.

Mills will travel with

her family to Washington D.C. in July to receive the EPA award. As part of winning the PIAEE, Mills will receive a plaque and $2,500 to further her professional development in environmental education, and the Islip School District will also receive $2,500 to fund environmental educational activities and programs.

“AnnMarie takes teaching to the next level by applying real-world scenarios into daily lessons,” said Principal Timothy Martin.

“Her students get to experience the environment right outside the classroom window which makes her lessons tangible, fun, and realistic for students.”
