The Town of Islip will host a series of public forums to help residents and businesses prepare for future hurricanes and significant storms. Multiple agencies will be on hand at each meeting to answer questions on a variety of topics, including loss of electricity, communications during an emergency, and handling medical emergencies during a storm. Other topics will detail how residents can best prepare their families and their homes for hurricanes, which may require that all family members be ready to evacuate if the need arises. Forums have been planned at various locations throughout Islip Town. “Hurricanes pose a very real threat to our Town, and every household needs to prepare and have a plan,” said Islip Town Supervisor Tom Croci. “Although our coastal communities are

Snapshots & Timehops By: Jamie Lynn Ryan At this time last year, I was in the midst of an eightday tour of Ireland with 13 members of my family. And today, thanks to the wonders of a clever little app called “Timehop,” I am able to relive each day of that memorable vacation via the handful of photos I posted on Facebook throughout the journey. And they say too much sharing is bad! Of course, this is but a small sampling of the nearly 1,000 pictures I snapped over the course of the week, from takeoff to landing and everything in between. Seeing as I

am slightly obsessed with finding random scenes and candid shots to capture on a daily basis, you can just imagine how thrilled I was to explore one of the most beautiful lands abroad. Under any circumstances, it qualified one of the greatest experiences of my life. Coupled with the fact that it marked my first time on a plane and my first journey out of the country, well, that just added to the highlight reel. Considering that, prior to this, I had never ventured beyond the span of states between Vermont and Virginia, it was quite a momentous occasion. This past Christmas, I

attempted to compile just a “few” favorites to create calendars and a small book of the journey as gifts. Seemed like a simple enough task; however, four hours after my initial brainstorm, I was still sitting at my computer, poring over hundreds of photos, comparing and eliminating until I had it narrowed down to the “perfect” mix. As if there was such a thing. The perfection is in the moments you create, the unplanned, unstaged instants that bring to life stories and anecdotes to last a lifetime. We could all use a few more of those.

My brother is always there when I need him, and knows just how to cheer me up after a rough day. Similarly, whenever my brother needs help, he knows just who to call. Since we were babies, our parents have been instilling in us the idea that we are the world’s

greatest tag-team. If we work together, there are few forces that can overcome us. Our relationship is stronger than any other I have ever witnessed. I will never understand why we finish each other’s sentences or why we cannot go a day without seeing each other. I will never know why he acts the way he acts, or why I do. I will never understand how two separate beings can be so close. I know we are brothers, and that is all that matters.

Ryan Spruyt, an East Islip High School Class of 2014 graduate, was Suffolk County’s recipient of the Long Island Association of Special Education Administrators’ Conrad Hecht Memorial Award, earning him a $500 scholarship. LIASEA, made up of special education administrators of public and private school programs and services who work together on challenging issues, presented certificates to Spruyt and other honorees and educators at their annual awards luncheon at the Milleridge Inn in Jericho. Spruyt entered East Islip’s career development program in the fall of 2012, where he spent mornings working on a modified curriculum to acquire the functional and academic skills necessary to pursue his goals, coupled with a supported work experience program in the community to build and reinforce skills necessary for future employment.

He demonstrated an interest in working with his hands in both the woodworking and automotive fields, leading to internships with a Marriott engineering/ maintenance crew as well as the Lacrosse Unlimited warehouse. As an avid lacrosse fan and player, he described the latter as his “dream job,” and was eventually taken on as an apprentice in the Lacrosse Unlimited string/dye room – a valuable skill and a coveted position in the lacrosse world. Spruyt’s supervisors even surprised him with a visit from a professional lacrosse player. “Ryan is on his way transitioning into the world of adulthood,” said teacher Margaret Gallagher. “He takes with him all the hard work he has put into his education and the success he has achieved thus. His strengths, interests and experiences have paved the path for his transition and we could not be more proud.”

TROOP WELCOMED - Town Clerk Olga Murray recently welcomed Girl Scout Troop 971 to Islip Town Hall to learn about the various functions performed within the Town Clerk’s office and to learn about the importance and role of women in local government.
