that there’s a solution to problems and that not all solutions are violent, and so they know that good people are there if they need help,” McGowan said.” “We were trying to think of a way to help, whether in a big way or something small,” Hall said. “There’s a lot of scary news and negativity that’s in our face, so we also included positive news and mental health apps to make it very tangible for other high school students. I think that a future career in helping people in some capacity might be something Brianna could look into. She has a very big heart and that is evident in what she did with this project.” “As we all were faced yet again with navigating
the darkness and tragedy of the events in Uvalde, the passion of a student to be proactive and to make a difference within her school community shined through,” said outgoing Principal Jon LaRochester. “I cannot tell you how impressed I was to learn of Brianna’s willingness to engage and support her schoolmates as thoughtfully and compassionately as she planned. Being as young as she is, it made it even more impressive. It is essential for us as educators to cultivate and support the natural leadership that students like Brianna display. These are the types of young men and women who will change the world, and it’s our job to help them learn how to do so.”
Taylor’s Hope Foundation is a non-profit organization that was formed in 2015 in honor of Taylor Ryan, who has been undergoing chemotherapy on and off since 2010 for treatment of a rare cancer, NeuroDegenerative Langerhans Cell Histiocytosis. For her parents, it was important to provide support to children who are battling an illness, while raising awareness and funds to help further research. Keeping kids smiling and supporting them and their family during one of the most challenging times in their lives is a goal that is especially important to them. “It is important that we show them people genuinely care, understand and want to help in any way possible,” said Teresa Ryan, Taylor’s mom. “Since the start of our foundation, it has helped and continues to help families who are dealing with their own demanding
situations. Whether it is assistance with medical bills, mortgage payments, air fare to get to out of state medical appointments, food and gas gift cards, or just a family day of fun, we continue to try to make an unimaginable situation less stressful! For the past three years, we have provided scholarships to two graduating seniors of the East Islip School District who have had to deal with or are dealing with a medical diagnosis. In addition, our foundation has pledged $100,000 to Cohen’s Children’s Hospital to assist in starting up a Histiocytosis research and registry program.” The foundation is holding a huge Bowling 4 Histio event at East Islip Lanes on Saturday, August 13, 2022. They will turn its outdoor parking lot into a carnivallike setting and there will be a large Chinese Auction with amazing prizes! If you would like to help them make a
difference, please consider joining them for a night of fun, laughter and smiles by purchasing tickets to attend the event: $40 bowler ticket or $30 non bowler ticket. Following recent school tragedies such as Uvalde, Islip High School freshman Brianna McGowan decided to do something positive to help her peers. McGowan and her school counselor Nicole Hall developed the idea of creating a flyer for students that included mental health resources available at the school, on Long Island, and via New York and national hotlines. McGowan also researched social media and included inspiring Instagram accounts and mental health apps. Teachers shared the flyer in their classrooms, and students could also find it on the school’s grade-level Teams pages. “Because of the Texas shooting, I felt upset and wanted to make something so that students know

Last week we featured two more the seven non-profits they oversee, this week you’ll learn about the remaining three.

“We have worked very hard to create new programs and opportunities for medically frail children,” said founder Bob Policastro, who opened the first home in East Moriches in 2000, and named after his daughter, who suffered severe brain damage during birth. “Over the years we’ve received tremendous support from Assemblyman Harvey Weisenberg, and have worked in collaboration with IGHL, Independent Group Home Living, to provide these services. We now operate more than 50 homes, multiple day programs and many other supportive programs for individual with intellectual disabilities.”
